No. 18 Nebraska hangs on against Wyoming in opener

NUNebraska piled up more than 500 yards of offense and won its nation-leading 28th straight opener.

You wouldn’t have known it from the atmosphere inside the 18th-ranked Cornhuskers’ locker room minutes after their 37-34 victory over Wyoming on Saturday night.

”I feel like we lost the game,” receiver Kenny Bell said.

Up 16 points in the fourth quarter, the Huskers had to sweat this one to the end after the four-touchdown-underdog Cowboys converted two late turnovers into touchdowns.

”It wasn’t very excited,” receiver Quincy Enunwa said of the mood of the team. ”We got a win and that’s always a great feeling. It’s not exactly how we wanted it to happen. We want to put this one in our past, watch the film and get better and come back next week with a better game.”

Ameer Abdullah and Imani Cross each ran for more than 100 yards and Taylor Martinez passed for three touchdowns.

The Cornhkuskers scored on four of five possessions after trailing 14-10 early in the second quarter and then had to hang on as Wyoming made it a game to the end.

”Well, we’re 1-0 and I’m happy we’re 1-0, but obviously we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said. ”I just told our team, whether you win the game by three or win 65-0, it’s never as good as you think it is, and it’s never as bad as you think it is.”

The Cowboys converted two late Nebraska turnovers into touchdowns to pull within 37-34 with 1:32 left. Nebraska recovered the onside kick after Brett Smith’s 47-yard TD pass to Robert Herron.

Wyoming’s defense held, and the Cowboys got the ball back on their 6 with 1:07 to play, but time ran out on them before they could even get to midfield.

”There’s not one happy kid in that locker room,” Wyoming coach Dave Christensen said. ”There’s a whole bunch of (mad) people because they know we could have won the football game but we didn’t make enough plays. Nebraska did.”

Martinez completed 17 of 22 passes for 155 yards. Abdullah ran for 114 yards and Cross for 105 and two touchdowns.

Nebraska needed all 530 of its total yards because Wyoming was able to put up alarming numbers against a defense that had to replace eight defensive starters.

The Cowboys generated 602 yards, with Smith completing 29 of 43 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns. Dominic Rufran caught 11 of his passes for 120 yards, and Shaun Wick rushed for another 101.

”To me, it was a bad dream,” Huskers defensive coordinator John Papuchis said. ”It was close to being a nightmare.”

The Huskers never could get comfortable, not even after Ciante Evans’ interception at the Nebraska 10 with his team leading by 16 points with less than 10 minutes to play.

The Cowboys got the ball back when Blair Burns intercepted Martinez, and Smith’s 29-yard touchdown to Jalen Claiborne pulled the Cowboys within 37-27 with 6:02 to play. The Cowboys’ 2-point try failed when Smith was sacked by Josh Mitchell.

After Marqueston Huff recovered Martinez’ fumble at the Wyoming 38, Smith found Herron along the right sideline for another TD that stunned the crowd on a sweltering night at Memorial Stadium.

”I was expecting a lot cleaner performance,” Pelini said, ”but by no means am I panicking.”

The Huskers looked like they would take control after going into halftime ahead 17-14.

Cross scored his second touchdown after he took a handoff, slipped up the middle, bounced off linebacker Jordan Stanton and spun around twice before finishing his 31-yard touchdown run for a 24-14 lead.

Nebraska went 67 yards in 15 plays on its next series, with Martinez lofting a 3-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Enunwa. Officials ruled Enunwa didn’t get his foot down inbounds, but the call was overturned on video review.

Wyoming pulled to 31-21 when Brandon Miller caught a short pass from Smith and battled his way into the end zone for a 22-yard TD.

”There was screaming on the sideline, telling everyone we were going to win that game,” Smith said. ”Everyone bought into it. We thought we were going to win that game.

”It came down to the final seconds. We put up better numbers. I’m so proud off how we executed. I’m proud of our guys but, shoot, it hurts.”

Nebraska has won all seven meetings with Wyoming and is 33-2 against current members of the Mountain West Conference.

The game drew a school-record attendance of 91,185, made possible by a 6,000-seat addition to the east side of Memorial Stadium.

K-State gets stunned by FCS champ North Dakota State in opener

KSUThe day began with a dedication ceremony for a massive renovation to Bill Snyder Family Stadium, and it ended with North Dakota State playing spoiler for Kansas State’s longtime head coach.

Led by a senior quarterback unflappable under pressure, and coached by someone who knows Snyder quite well, the plucky Bison rallied from a two-touchdown hole to beat the defending Big 12 champion Wildcats 24-21 on Friday night before the second-largest crowd in school history.

”It was just one of those moments where we had to gut it out,” said Brock Jensen, who backed into the end zone for the go-ahead score with 28 seconds left to cap an 18-play, 80-yard drive that ate up 8 1/2 minutes and left the Wildcats virtually no time to try for a tying field goal.

”That was the most gutty performance I’ve seen in my entire life in any level,” Jensen said.

Turns out that Snyder had a similar opinion of the Bison’s performance.

”They play very, very hard,” he said. ”They’re a tough football team. They played harder than we did, they were tougher than we were, they were better coached than we were.”

Much of the credit for that goes to Craig Bohl, the longtime assistant coach at Nebraska who has led the Bison to back-to-back FCS national champions. The defensive guru matched wits with Snyder on an annual basis during the early years of the Big 12, often coming out on top.

”Many teams have come in and Kansas State’s jumped up and had folded. Our guys did not do that,” Bohl said. ”For me personally, I have a great deal of respect for Kansas State and Coach Snyder from all those years in Nebraska. They are a tremendous program, so for us it’s a great win.”

Jensen threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns for the Bison, who have made a habit of knocking off bigger and more glamorous schools. Three years ago it was the Wildcats’ in-state rival Kansas, two years ago it was Minnesota from the Big Ten, and last year Colorado State was bitten.

”Obviously they’re a good team. They’re back-to-back national champions,” said Kansas State quarterback Jake Waters, who threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns.

Waters helped the Wildcats build a 21-7 lead by the third quarter before everything fell apart. He wound up throwing a pair of interceptions, including one on a desperation heave after the Bison had taken the lead to seal the biggest win in North Dakota State history.

When the final gun sounded, the Bison raced to midfield to celebrate, and then headed to the corner of the end zone that was painted yellow by their fans – a strong contingent in the crowd of 53,351, the second-largest ever to see a game at Kansas State.

”We’ve had a lot of these types of wins,” Bohl said, ”but never over a program like this.”

Sam Ojuri had 10 carries for 127 yards, and John Crockett also ran for 50 yards for the Bison. Ryan Smith caught eight passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.

It was a glum way for the Wildcats to wrap up a festive day on campus.

The school dedicated a $90 million renovation to the west side of its stadium in a ceremony attended by Gov. Sam Brownback and Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran. Along with a ribbon-cutting, the school also unveiled an 8-foot bronze statue of its beloved coach.

Snyder even made the rare decision to leave his team on game day for a few hours to attend the ceremony, but joked that if the Wildcats stumbled ”it’s all going to be on my shoulders.”

Then again, perhaps the 73-year-old Snyder wasn’t joking at all.

Kansas State struggled early on with Waters taking over for departed Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein under center. The Bison took advantage of the lull – and a 49-yard punt return by Christian Dudzik – to take a 7-0 lead on Jensen’s 5-yard pass to Smith late in the first quarter.

The Wildcats finally got on the board when Waters completed four straight passes, capped by a 45-yard touchdown toss to Thompson early in the second quarter. But both teams squandered chances to seize a halftime lead – Waters was picked off deep in his own territory, only for the Kevin Vaadeland to drop a TD catch and Adam Keller to clang a field-goal attempt off the left upright.

Kansas State threatened to break the game open in the third quarter.

Waters followed a couple short completions with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Lockett, who had run right past Williams to get open. On the ensuing series, backup QB Daniel Sams made his season debut on third-and-3 at the Bison 17 and ran almost untouched for a touchdown that made it 21-7.

North Dakota State was on the ropes when Jensen engineered a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that he capped with a 9-yard pass to Vaadeland. The Bison twice converted short third downs.

Keller atoned for his miss by hitting from 41 yards to make it 21-17 after three quarters.

The Wildcats were still clinging to that lead when North Dakota State got the ball back in the fourth quarter. Jensen methodically led the Bison downfield, picking up a first down at every key juncture, and then used his legs to carry them into the end zone for the go-ahead score.

”Any time you have the lead and you let it go to a good team, it’s upsetting,” Kansas State linebacker Tre Walker said. ”You have to give them credit. They played well. Even when they were down they kept playing, and tonight we came up short.”

Western hires Greg Dillon as men’s & women’s golf coach

MWSUMissouri Western Director of Athletics Kurt McGuffin has announced the hiring of Greg Dillon as the new Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach. Dillon comes to MWSU after four years at Colorado State University-Pueblo and takes over for Cathy Habermehl and Jim Perry who retired this past summer.

“I believe Greg will be a great fit not only to lead our golf programs but also for the community of St. Joseph,” commented McGuffin. “He is very knowledgeable not only as an instructor of the game of golf but has been a highly successful NCAA Division II Coach.”

While at CSU-Pueblo, Dillon established one of the top women’s golf programs in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  He also established himself as one of the top women’s golf coaches in RMAC history.

“I can’t tell you how excited I am to have this opportunity to come to Missouri Western,” Dillon said.  “We have a rich golf tradition and I am eager to arrive to build on that and to hit the ground running.”

Dillon, a three-time RMAC Coach of the Year recipient, took the women’s golf program from “worst to first,” taking over a last place program in 2009 and systematically improving the program to conference champions and beyond.

His step-by-step process began in 2010 as the ThunderWolves had their first All-RMAC golfer in Rachel Means.

In 2011, CSU-Pueblo rose to 4th in the conference as RMAC Freshman of the Year Michaela Breit became the program’s first ever golfer to qualify individually for the NCAA Division II Super Regional. In recognition of his team’s performance in 2010-11, Dillon was named the RMAC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year.

In year three, the “worst to first” journey was complete as the ThunderWolves caught fire at the end of the season, winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship and qualifying as a team for the NCAA Division II Super Regional.  He again was named the RMAC Coach of the Year.

By 2013, his team won nearly every tournament, barely missing out on a second straight RMAC championship by finishing second to close the season and qualifying RMAC Golfer of the Year, Leina Kim, for the NCAA Division II National Championship as an individual, finishing in the top 40.

“I am very proud of the program we built at CSUP and it was very tough to leave but the opportunity to come to a school and a situation such as Missouri Western was just to enticing to pass up,” said Dillon.  “I am excited to work with the current student-athletes and we will recruit nationally to build a team that will compete for MIAA Championships and NCAA Regionals on a yearly a basis.”

In addition to being the Women’s Golf Coach at CSUP, Dillon served as the Director of Instruction at Desert Hawk Golf Club in Pueblo.  He is a member of the Professional Golfers Association of America as he has Class A-1 Certification and has received commendation from the PGA as a junior golf instructor.

Dillon has extensive experience in the golf industry as before returning to CSU-Pueblo, he served as a golf professional in a variety of locations, including Pueblo West, Colorado; New Port Ritchie, Florida and Cheyenne, Wyoming including being the Head Golf Professional and General Manager of the Shadow Hills Golf Club in Canon City, Colorado for 17 years.

He also has an extensive background as a player.  Collegiately he’s an alum of CSUP and was a member of the ThunderWolves’ golf team from 1975-78 and helped lead the team to the 1978 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship where he was an all-RMAC selection, as well as two NCAA Division II Regional appearances (1976, 1978).  He currently competes in many PGA section events as well as other regional qualifiers.

Dillon will officially take over on September 9th as he will join the Griffon Men’s Golf Team in Kearney, Nebraska at the UNK Loper Invitational.

Tom Smith named head coach of MWSU women’s tennis program

MWSUMissouri Western State University’s Director of Athletics, Kurt McGuffin has announced the hiring of two new coaches for the Women’s Tennis program Thursday morning. The Griffons have hired, the recently retired Men’s Basketball coach Tom Smith as the head coach while Raven Searcy, a four-year tennis athlete at Northwest Missouri State, will be the new graduate assistant. Smith takes over for former Tennis Coach Ron Selkirk.

Smith served as the basketball coach at Missouri Western for 25 years before retiring last March. He left the program as the all-time leader in wins and also accumulated more than 600 wins as a basketball coach throughout his 38 years in the coaching ranks.

Smith’s tennis knowledge dates back to his days at Valparaiso where he was the coach for three seasons. He was the Indiana Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 1966 after his squad won the conference title.  Smith’s wife, Patsy, is also a former Head Women’s Tennis Coach, and in 1998 she led Griffons to their first NCAA Tournament.

“I certainly do not profess to have the expertise that Coach Selkirk has, but what I can bring to the table is 46 years of coaching experience at the college level,” commented Coach Smith. “One of our objectives is to get the women’s tennis program more involved with the rest of the athletic department. Hopefully having a coach on campus help will expedite that move. ”

Searcy played for the Bearcats in the early 2000s. She was named to several all-conference teams, and played high school tennis for Central High School in St. Joseph. While at Central she was an All-State performer twice and compiled a record of 31-9.

She graduated from Northwest in the spring of 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

“Often times programs like tennis and golf feel like they are never part of an athletic department and it is very difficult to be a part-time coach to full-time student athletes,” stated Director of Athletic Kurt McGuffin. “Our main focus was to fully support these programs so that they have the tools to compete in this league. Coach Smith is dedicated to MWSU and its student athletes and along with Coach Searcy they will devote time and energy both on and off the court to provide a quality experience for our tennis student-athletes.”
