K-State sets school record for All-Big 12 baseball honors

riggertKStateKansas State reaped the rewards of its first-ever Big 12 Championship season as a school-record seven players earned All-Big 12 First Team honors Tuesday and head coach Brad Hill was named Coach of the Year for the second time.

In addition, the Wildcats took home three other major awards with Ross Kivett voted by the league coaches as Player of the Year, pitcher Jake Matthys being named Freshman of the Year and Jared King receiving the Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

The conference announced its postseason awards during a luncheon Tuesday at the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.

Joining Kivett, Matthys and King on the first team were catcher Blair DeBord, first baseman Shane Conlon, shortstop Austin Fisher and outfielder/pitcher Tanner Witt. Kivett, King, Conlon and Fisher were all unanimous selections. Outfielder Jon Davis picked up honorable mention accolades, while Matthys and Levi MaVorhis earned spots on the Big 12 All-Freshman squad.

K-State had previously never had more than three players named to the league’s first team, and by having seven selections it tied the Big 12 record set by Baylor last season. Additionally, the three infielders on the list tied a league record with the 2008 Texas A&M squad.

With Hill’s nod as Coach of the Year, K-State became the first school in conference history to have its football, men’s basketball and baseball coaches all earn the honor during the same academic year. The Wildcats won conference championships in all three sports, the second school in league history to accomplish the feat.

Hill, who also earned the honor in 2009, guided the Wildcats to their first conference championship in 80 years with a 39-16 overall record and a 16-7 mark in Big 12 play. The 39 wins are the second-most in school history and tied for the most in regular-season play, while K-State’s 16 conference wins set a school record.

Kivett is the third Wildcat to be named conference player of the year, joining 1992 Big Eight Player of the Year Craig Wilson and 2010 Big 12 Player of the Year Nick Martini. The second baseman, who earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career, hit .359 on the year to rank fourth in the Big 12, while his .376 average against league foes ranked second.

A product of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Kivett enters the Big 12 Championship ranked second in the conference in hits (80) and steals (26), third in runs scored (46), fourth in triples (4), fifth in total bases (103) and sixth in on-base percentage (.434).

Matthys is the first K-State player to earn Big 12 Freshman of the Year accolades. The right-handed pitcher produced an 8-0 record with a 2.01 ERA and six saves in 28 relief appearances. He broke the Kansas State freshman record for wins as well as victories by a relief pitcher during the Big 12 era while also tying the school’s top freshman mark for saves. His eight victories are tied for first in the Big 12 this season, and the Spring Lake Park, Minn., product ranks second in appearances and seventh in saves.

King, who earned his second-straight Academic All-Big 12 First Team honor last week, is hitting .342 with 14 doubles, six home runs and a team-leading 46 RBI. King registered his first All-Big 12 First Team accolade after picking up second-team honors each of the last two years.

Witt earned his second All-Big 12 honor as he was an honorable-mention selection last season, while DeBord, Conlon and Fisher each garnered their first career honors. Witt is hitting .324 with seven doubles and 29 RBI, and the right-hander holds a 3.18 ERA with seven saves in 17 appearances on the mound. His seven saves rank sixth in the conference and are tied for seventh in school history.

DeBord, who has caught 51 games this season, is hitting .321 with 10 doubles and 30 RBI while holding a .992 fielding percentage. Conlon leads the team in home runs with seven as he is hitting .340 with 27 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Fisher led the Big 12 with a .412 conference-only batting average and is hitting .358 overall.

Kansas adds Memphis transfer Tarik Black

KUKansas head coach Bill Self announced Tarik Black will transfer from Memphis and has signed a grant-in-aid agreement to play men’s basketball at KU.

Black, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound front court player from Memphis, Tenn., received his bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from Memphis earlier this month and will have one year of eligibility at KU.

“Although excited our by enthusiasm is tempered by what is happening just south of Oklahoma City in Moore, Oklahoma, with the devastation of the storms and all those families involved,” Self said. “We wish nothing but the very best for them and our thoughts are with them.

“We received Tarik’s financial aid papers earlier today and we are thrilled he has chosen to play his final year of college basketball at KU,” Self said. “He will be a huge addition both physically and emotionally, especially from a leadership standpoint, as he will be the most experienced guy on our team entering next season.”

Last season Black started five of 32 games played for Memphis (31-5, 16-0 in Conference USA) and averaged 8.1 points and 4.8 rebounds. His 58.9 field goal percentage was second best on the team. He had 20 blocked shots and 22 steals at the power forward position.

“Tarik has played in a ton of big games and certainly has had good experience at Memphis,” Self said. “He’s used to winning and can help us in both of our big positions. He can play the four and the five and we look forward to moving him around. He’ll be an impact player that certainly changes the outlook of our team and makes us more versatile.”

Black comes to KU with impressive career numbers, averaging 9.3 points (949 points) and 4.9 rebounds. He started 60 of 102 games while at Memphis and has a 60 percent career field goal percentage. His best season at Memphis came in 2011-12, his sophomore year, when he averaged 10.7 points and shot 68.9 percent from the field.

Black earned All-Conference USA Second Team honors in 2012 and was also named to Conference USA’s All-Defensive Team and All-Tournament Team. In 2011, Black was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team after he averaged 9.1 points and 5.0 rebounds for the Tigers.

“Tarik had a very good experience at Memphis playing for Josh Pastner,” Self said of Black, who played at Ridgeway High School in Memphis. “He was a great high school player under Wes Henning at Ridgeway and I think his transition will be smooth.”

Black joins one of the top recruiting classes in the nation for 2013-14 at KU. Last week, the Jayhawks signed the nation’s No. 1 recruit, guard Andrew Wiggins, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound guard from Toronto, Canada, via Huntington Prep (W. Va.). Other KU signees, ranked by rivals.com, include: No. 12 Wayne Selden (G, 6-5, 205, Tilton [N.H.] School), No. 25 Joel Embiid (C, 7-0, 220, Rock School, Gainesville, Fla.), No. 29 Brannen Greene (F, 6-7, 200, Tift County High, Tifton, Ga.), No. 34 Conner Frankamp (G, 6-0, 160, Wichita North) and No. 76 Frank Mason (G, 5-11, 180, Massanutten Military Academy, Petersburg, Va.).  Additionally, KU has landed former Arkansas center Hunter Mickelson, who will sit out next season then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Top high school recruit Andrew Wiggins picks Kansas

KUTop basketball prospect Andrew Wiggins will play his college basketball at Kansas.

The 6-foot-8 Toronto native signed a letter-of-intent Tuesday, choosing the Jayhawks over Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida State.

The ceremony ended the frenzied pursuit of the Huntington Prep star, who averaged 23.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this season.

Rather than turn his announcement into a spectacle, Wiggins wanted a private signing ceremony with family and friends where he attends classes at St. Joseph’s Central Catholic High School in Huntington.

Initially rated as a 2014 prospect, Wiggins shot to the top of recruiting charts when he decided last October to reclassify into his original high school class of 2013. The four major recruiting services rated Wiggins as the No. 1 overall recruit.

Wiggins had kept quiet on his intentions. He had yet to even make a verbal commitment and delayed his signing until almost the very end — Wednesday is the deadline for recruits to sign with NCAA Division I schools.

Interest grew in recent weeks. As one fan put told Wiggins in a Twitter post, “You’re driving 4 schools and 4 fan bases absolutely insane.”

Wiggins’ game did the talking. He has the ability to make shots from all angles and distances, blow past defenders to the basket and reach the rim at eye level. Wiggins was the recipient of this year’s Gatorade Boys National Basketball Player of the Year and Naismith Foundation national awards. He has been called the best prep prospect since LeBron James.

Wiggins participated in several postseason all-star games, most recently playing for the World Select Team at the Nike Hoop Summit April 20 in Portland, Ore.

Wiggins cited fatigue from the Oregon trip for canceling scheduled visits from North Carolina coach Roy Williams, Kansas’ Bill Self and Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton. Wiggins instead talked to them by phone. Kentucky coach John Calipari had visited Wiggins in Huntington on March 28.

Rob Fulford, Wiggins’ coach at Huntington Prep, has said he tried to stay out of the player’s decision, other than explaining to him what to look for in a program.

“What I do during the recruiting process is make sure you understand the style of play, coaching styles and can you see yourself playing for this team, this coach and these teammates,” Fulford said. “Because that’s mainly what it boils down to. Don’t worry about buildings. Everybody has a nice practice facility.”

While mulling his decision, Wiggins had to sort out family matters and figuring out who he might have to share the court with.

His Huntington Prep teammate and fellow Toronto native, Xavier Rathan-Mayes, signed with Florida State in December. Both of Wiggins’ parents attended Florida State.

His father is former NBA first-round pick Mitchell Wiggins. His mother, Marita Payne-Wiggins, was a Canadian Olympic sprinter and silver medalist. Older brother Nick plays guard at Wichita State and another brother, Mitchell Jr., plays at NAIA school Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla.

Kentucky already has eight signees in what is considered to be its greatest recruiting class ever.

Despite the loss of Ben McLemore to the NBA draft, four of Kansas’ five recruits are considered to be in the top 50 nationally.
