Three Bearcats earn All-America honors

Junior offensive lineman Rod Williams highlighted three Northwest Missouri State players that earned All-America honors released Wednesday afternoon by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America.

Williams earned First-Team All-America accolades, while he was joined on the Second-Team by senior offensive lineman Cody Johnson, and linebacker Chad Kilgore. Williams and Johnson helped a Bearcat offense that led the nation in scoring with 48 points per game and was ranked fourth in total offense. Northwest also had two running backs rush for a combined 2,204 yards.

Kilgore led the Bearcats in tackles for a third straight season, finishing with 123 stops — 11 for loss. The 230-pound weak-side backer makes his first appearance on the AFCA squad after earning second-team honors by another publication as a junior.

The Orrick, Mo., native spearheaded a Northwest defense that returned just two starters and played a key role in propelling the Bearcats to the quarterfinals for the eighth straight season.

Kilgore’s 392 career tackles are the fourth-most in program history.

Griffons’ Zuerlein named AFCA All-America

Missouri Western senior place kicker Greg Zuerlein has been named to the 2011 AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Team announced by the American Football Coaches Association Tuesday.

Zuerlein, a first team All-MIAA and Daktronics Super Region Four selection from Lincoln, Neb.,  led the nation in field goals per game (2.30) and broke a NCAA and MIAA record with 21 consecutive field goals made. He set an MWSU record, with 23 field goals in a regular season and broke a school record, with a 58-yard field goal against Northwest Missouri State twice.

He also led the conference with an average of 10.7 points per game which is sixth in the nation. He leads the nation with a .952 field goal percentage for any kicker with at least 12 attempts.

Zuerlein became Western’s first MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year and is just the third Western kicker named first team All-MIAA. He was named the D2Football.com Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in the Griffons 31-28 victory over Northwest Missouri State on November 5. With his 21 consecutive field goals nine of them were from 50 or more yards.

A three-time MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week honoree – the most by any player in that category – Zuerlein is the first Griffon kicker to be selected to the first team.

This marks the second time in his career that Zuerlein has been named first team All-America as he was selected back in 2009 when he kicked for Nebraska-Omaha. Zuerlein is just the fourth Griffon to ever be named to the AFCA All-America squad with the last being offensive lineman Roger Allen back in 2008. The other two were running back Jeremiah White in 2005 and safety Pierre Thomas in 2003.

2011 Greg Zuerlein Award List
• All-MIAA First Team Selection
• America Football Coaches Association All-American
• Daktronics First Team All-Region
• MIAA Special Teams Player of the Year

Northwest’s Kilgore earns All-America honors

Northwest Missouri State senior linebacker, Chad Kilgore was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America Team announced on Tuesday.

Kilgore led the Bearcats in tackles for the second straight season with 123 which was third best in the MIAA. The Orrick, Mo., native also led Northwest with 11.5 tackles for loss and finished with five games of 11 or more tackles. He finished with 2.5 sacks and one interception on the season as well.

The senior helped lead Northwest to the playoffs all four season and the eighth consecutive overall. The Bearcats finished the season 11-3 falling in the National Quarterfinals to Pittsburg State, who will play in the National Championship game this Saturday. Kilgore and the Bearcats claimed the 2009 national title as a sophomore starter on the Northwest defense.

With Kilgore’s honor, Northwest has the longest current streak with a player selected to the AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Team at 16 straight seasons, from 1996 to present. The Bearcats have been represented 17 times by 13 different players, fourth most in NCAA Division II.

The AFCA’s Division II All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA’s nine districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.

Jayhawks name Grunhard offensive line coach

Kansas head football coach Charlie Weis announced here Tuesday the addition of Tim Grunhard to the Jayhawk coaching staff. Grunhard will join the KU program as the offensive line coach, effective Jan. 1.

Grunhard will join the KU staff after serving as the head coach of Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Kan. He led the Stags to five-straight district titles and the 2009 Class 4A state title in his six seasons at the helm of the program. Under Grunhard’s tutelage, six Bishop Miege players have gone on to earn Division I scholarships.

Prior to coaching at Miege, Grunhard enjoyed an 11-year NFL career, all of which were as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a second-round draft pick in 1990 and was the anchor of the Chiefs offensive line throughout his career, earning a spot in the 1999 Pro Bowl. Grunhard started 164 games for Kansas City, which still ranks third in franchise history.

A native of Chicago, Grunhard is a 1990 graduate of Notre Dame where he was a standout offensive lineman and was a member of the 1988 Irish National Championship team.

Kansas’ Robinson earns national honor

Kansas forward Thomas Robinson has been named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for games ending the week of Sunday, Dec. 11. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and will be handed out each Tuesday through Feb. 21 this season.

As the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, Robinson was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week. Robinson is the first recipient of the national accolade for the 2011-12 season.

Robinson, a 6-10 junior from Washington, D.C., averaged 23.5 points and nine rebounds for the week and scored 21 points, including 10 of his team’s last 12, as the Jayhawks defeated then-No. 2 Ohio State, 78-67, on Saturday. He had 26 points and 11 rebounds in an earlier 88-80 win over Long Beach State. For the week, Robinson made 17-of-23 field-goal attempts (74 percent) and was 13-18 from the free-throw line.

This is the third season that the USBWA has selected a national player of the week. The weekly Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week is added to the Oscar Robertson Trophy watch list, which will be released at mid-season.

Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation’s oldest award and the only one named after a former player.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership of the USBWA. The winner of the 2012 Oscar Robertson Trophy will be announced and presented by its namesake, Oscar Robertson, at the USBWA’s annual awards breakfast on Fri., March 30 in New Orleans, site of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Final Four.

Northwest Missouri State men cruise past Graceland

Northwest Missouri State got off to a 20 point lead and never looked back as the Bearcats finished their first undefeated non-conference schedule for the first time since the 2003-04 season, with a 90-60 win over Graceland on Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Arena.

The Bearcats also improved to 9-0 on the year for the first time since the 03-04 season where Northwest rattled off 13 straight wins to start the year. Graceland fell to 6-7 on the year and has lost its last four games.

Northwest jumped out early on the Yellowjackets and never trailed as they built a 23-4 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Bearcats extended their lead to 50-18 at the half, but would have to withstand a feverish Graceland rally to start the second half.

Graceland pulled within 13 points just under the 9 minute mark in the game, but Dillon Starzl knocked down the next four points to jump start the Bearcat rally. Starzl barely missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds in the win.

The Northwest defense would lock down in the final 8 minutes to build the Bearcat lead back to 25 after Justin Clark intercepted a Yellowjacket pass and pushed ahead to DeShaun Cooper for the easy lay-in. Cooper was 1 of 6 Bearcats to finish in double figures with 10 points.

DeAngelo Hailey came off the bench for the Bearcats to score 17 points and led all players and added nine rebounds.

Northwest dominated the smaller Yellowjackets inside posting 32 points in the paint and holding Graceland to only 14.

The Bearcats return to MIAA action on Saturday as they travel to 10th-ranked Fort Hays State in a battle for first-place. Tip from Hays, Kan. is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Kansas State hands out football awards Sunday

Quarterback Collin Klein, linebacker Arthur Brown and defensive back Nigel Malone were named Kansas State’s 2011 offensive and defensive MVPs, while three players – Anthony Cantele, Tyler Lockett and Jared Loomis – took special teams MVP honors as the Wildcat football program held its annual awards ceremony Sunday night at McCain Auditorium on the K-State campus.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to everyone involved with this football program, including our coaches, support staff, players and especially their families,” head coach Bill Snyder said to those in attendance. “This coveted senior class has demonstrated tremendous leadership and worked extremely hard to pull this team together this season.”

Klein, an All-Big 12 pick by both the coaches and the Associated Press, has collected a school-record 26 rushing touchdowns this season – two shy of the Big 12 and FBS quarterback record – while rushing for a K-State quarterback record 1,099 yards. The signal caller has also eclipsed the 1,000-yard barrier through the air with 1,745 yards on 145-of-251 aim, while he has thrown 12 touchdowns and just five interceptions.

Brown, the Big 12’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year by both the coaches and the AP, started all 12 games during the regular season for the Wildcats. The Wichita, Kan., product has accumulated 95 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception that led to a game-winning field goal against then-No. 15 Baylor.

Malone, a second team Walter Camp All-American pick, leads the Big 12 and is tied for third nationally with seven interceptions. A Thorpe Award semifinalist that started all 12 games for the Wildcats, Malone also ranks fourth in the Big 12 and tied for eighth nationally with 16 passes defended, while he has carded 57 tackles. Malone was also named a First Team All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches and a second-team pick by the Associated Press.

Cantele, who earned three Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors this season, is 17-of-22 on field goals and is 10-of-14 in the 30-49-yard range. The All-Big 12 pick is tied for fifth in school history for field goals made in a season and fifth for field goals attempted in a season.

A first team Walter Camp All-American, Lockett was tops nationally during the regular season with a 35.19-yard kickoff return average, an amazing three yards per return better than the player in second. An All-Big 12 selection by the league’s coaches and the Associated Press as well as the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, Lockett currently ranks first in school history in average ahead of William Powell’s 34.6-yard mark last year, and is also tops in Big 12 history ahead of Chris Massey (Oklahoma State), who averaged 34.8 yards per return in 2001.

Loomis was instrumental to the success of K-State’s special teams this season as he played on four of six units. He collected nine total tackles and forced a fumble on special teams this season while also playing a pivotal role on the Wildcats’ kick return unit that saw Lockett lead the nation in return average.

On the academic side, National Scholar Athlete and Campbell Trophy finalist Tysyn Hartman received the program’s Scholar-Athlete award. Hartman, who graduated in 3.5 years with a degree in finance, was a 2011 First Team Academic All-American and also earned Academic All-Big 12 honors four times.

The No. 8 Wildcats (10-2) have enjoyed their best season since 2003 in 2011 and will face No. 6 Arkansas (10-2) in the 2012 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic on January 6. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
