Western soccer rallies for dramatic OT win over Emporia State

ST. JOSEPH – The fans at Spratt Stadium earned every penny of their ticket on Friday night, as the Griffons outlasted the Hornets in a back-and-forth game that saw three ties and four lead changes. Griffon Soccer (6-3) defeated Emporia State (6-2-1) in overtime on Friday night by a score of 4-3 to pick up their first MIAA conference win. The Griffons were down 3-2 with under a minute left when Claire Meyers kept the team’s hopes alive with her game-tying goal to take the game into overtime. In overtime, it was Menke who sent the Hornets home after converting on the penalty kick.

NOTABLES

  • Claire Meyers’ goal to send the game into overtime came with just 14 seconds left in the game. Her third goal of the season now ties her for the second-most on the team.
  • Claire Meyers also drew the caution in the box in overtime that set up the game-winning goal for the Griffons.
  • Cassidy Menke drilled the game-winning penalty kick goal in the right corner to give Missouri Western its first MIAA conference win of the season.
  • The Griffons’ last overtime game came on October 8 of last season, a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Fort Hays.
  • Missouri Western’s last overtime win came on October 7, 2016 in a 2-1 win at Nebraska Kearney.
  • Friday night’s game against the Hornets marked the first time the Griffons scored four goals in an MIAA game since scoring five against Missouri Southern on September 29 of last season.

Northwest soccer gets blanked by Washburn

The Washburn Ichabods defeated the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats at Bearcat Pitch, 2-0.

The Bearcats were able to create some scoring opportunities with 10 shots on target but Whitney Bockover was there for Washburn to save them.

The Ichabods’s goals were both scored by Olivia Grasso one in the first half assisted by Ellie Karloff and the other in the second half which was assisted by Mackenzie Hieman.

The Bearcats will play at home again on Sunday against the Emporia State Hornets starting at 1 p.m.

Missouri Western AD Josh Looney appointed to NCAA Football Rules Committee

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Director of Athletics Josh Looney has accepted an appointment to the NCAA Football Rules Committee.

The purpose of the NCAA Football Rules Committee is to review, affirm, and adjust all game rules and policies for football in the NCAA. The committee has focused on issues such as player safety, rule updates, officiating, and on-field player equipment.

The opportunity to serve on the NCAA Football Rules Committee is an accomplishment that not many administrators and coaches in America are given. The committee is made up of 13 individual members from affiliations across the NCAA. Of those members, there are six from Division I, three from Division II, and three from Division III. Of the three committee members currently representing Division II, Looney is the only director of athletics, as the other two are head football coaches.

Each member of the committee serves a four-year term. Looney will serve on the committee until August 2022.

Josh Looney is serving in his second year as Director of Athletics at Missouri Western.

Northwest’s Althoff named semifinalist for William V. Campbell Trophy

IRVING, Texas (Sept. 26, 2018) – Recognizing one of the most impressive groups of scholar-athletes in the history of college football, The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) proudly announced today the 179 semifinalists, including Northwest Missouri State senior linebacker Ben Althoff, for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy®. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. Fidelity Investments is a proud partner of the Campbell Trophy®.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 31, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 60th NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. The finalists will travel to New York City for the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 29th William V. Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

Northwest Missouri State is represented by senior linebacker Ben Althoff (Palmyra, Missouri/Palmyra HS). Althoff carries a 3.87 grade point average with a double major in agronomy and agricultural business. Althoff led the Bearcats in tackles in 2017 for a defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense, total defense and third-down conversion defense. In 2018, Althoff has helped Northwest to a 3-1 start and No. 17 national ranking in the AFCA Div. II Coaches Top 25. Althoff is a captain on this year’s Bearcat football squad.

Althoff has participated in a a local Maryville community spring yard clean up. He has volunteered at the courthouse for landscape work. He has served lunch at St. Gregory’s Catholic School to students. He helped paint the hallways at Eugene Field Elementary Schools. He has served as a guest speaker at the 2018 Wilderness Camping and Retreat Center Sports Camps.
“These 179 impressive candidates truly represent the scholar-athlete ideal,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning, whose sons Peyton (Campbell Trophy® winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “For 60 years, the NFF National Scholar-Athlete program has showcased more than 800 college football players who have been successful on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. This year’s semifinalists further illustrate the power of our great sport in developing the next generation of influential leaders.”

Named in honor of the late Bill Campbell, former chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF’s Gold Medal, the Campbell Trophy® is a 25-pound bronze trophy and increases the amount of the recipient’s grant by $7,000 for a total postgraduate scholarship of $25,000. This year’s postgraduate scholarships will push the program’s all-time distribution to more than $11.5 million.

Griffon volleyball loses in four sets at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Missouri Western Volleyball (9-8) fell to Truman (12-3) in its final non-conference game of the season. The Griffons fell in four sets (24-26, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25) to the Bulldogs.

NOTABLES

  • Tuesday night’s game against the Bulldogs will be the last time the Griffons will face non-MIAA competition as their remaining 14 games are all MIAA games.
  • Although the Griffons lost in four sets, the first and second sets were close. The Griffons held a 21-20 lead in set one and were tied 21-21 in set four.
  • Liv Winker distributed to a variety of teammates on Tuesday. Stephanie Doak and Shellby Taylor each had over 40 attack attempts and Sam Duncan totaled 29 attempts.

STATS AND LEADERS

  • Three Griffons reached double-digits kills with Shellby Taylor leading the team at 13 kills.
  • Missouri Western’s best hitting set came in the fourth at .275.
  • Liv Winker continued to fill the role of primary setter and finished with 44 assists.
  • Both Ali Tauchen and Audrey Keim leds the Griffons with 21 digs each.

MWSU’s Anna Mayer named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In her seventh collegiate soccer game, Anna Mayer accomplished what no one had in 58 consecutive tries. Missouri Western’s freshman goalkeeper shutout Central Missouri, Friday night, and for her efforts was named MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week.

Mayer stopped 11 UCM shots Friday to end the then No. 1 Jennies’ streak of 58 games with at least a goal. The Duluth, Minnesota native’s first-career shutout helped the Griffons snap the defending national champion’s 32-game winning streak and end Missouri Western’s 24-game losing streak to UCM. Sunday, Mayer did allow a goal in the Griffons’ 1-0 loss to Lindenwood, but the freshman goalkeeper is still 5-2 on the season and sports the MIAA’s second-best save percentage (.870) and third-best goals against average (.882).

It was the second-straight week Griffon Soccer was represented in the MIAA weekly women’s soccer awards. Cassidy Menke was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18.

Missouri Western stays home this week to face Emporia State and Washburn. The Griffons could make another statement win on Friday. Emporia State will enter ranked No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches Central Region poll while the Griffons sit at No. 8.

Northwest’s Achengli earns MIAA cross country honor

For the second time in as many weeks the Northwest Missouri State Bearcat cross country program has had a student-athlete named the MIAA athlete of the week.

Junior Karim Achengli (Adra, Spain/Iowa Central CC) placed 12th overall out of 441 runners at the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Achengli ran a time of 24:46.2 on the 8,000 meter course.

MIAA hands out weekly football honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MIAA announced its’ weekly Football Athletes of the Week. Cole Morris of Pittsburg State was named Defensive Athlete of the Week. Central Oklahoma’s Chandler Garrett earned Offensive Athlete of the Week. Fort Hays State’s Dante Brown was tabbed as Special Teams Athlete of the Week.

Morris forced two fumbles and recorded two quarterback sacks in No. 15 Pittsburg State’s 30-17 victory over Nebraska-Kearney. One of his forced fumbles went out of the back of the end zone and gave PSU a safety. Morris made five tackles overall, including two solo tackles, 2.5 tackles-for-loss and two quarterback sacks as the Gorillas limited the Lopers to 132 rushing yards and 267 total yards.

Garrett led Central Oklahoma to an upset of fourth-ranked Northwest Missouri. He went 17-for-33 with 274 yards and four touchdowns and had 18 carries for 59 yards. Garrett orchestrated a 12-play, 99-yard scoring drive and also had a 1-play, 72-yard scoring drive. In the win, he completed a pass to six different receivers with touchdown passes going to four different receivers.

Brown finished with 13 kicking points in the 55-20 win for Fort Hays State over Missouri Southern. He was a perfect 2-of-2 on field goal attempts, connecting from 48 and 43 yards, and went 7-of-7 on point after touchdown tries. He was also effective on his three punts in the game, averaging 52 yards per punt with a game-long of 65 yards.

Missouri Western soccer gets blanked by Lindenwood in MIAA opener

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western soccer team (5-3) was shut out 1-0 in its Sunday afternoon match against Lindenwood (4-3-1). Tough defense by both teams led to limited scoring opportunities throughout the game as the Griffons suffered a letdown after upsetting No. 1 Central Missouri on Friday.

NOTABLES

  • The game remained scoreless throughout most of the game and looked to be heading for overtime. The game’s lone goal was scored in the 78th minute off of a Lindenwood corner kick.
  • Missouri Western is now 0-1 in MIAA league play since Sunday’s game was the first game that counts towards conference records.
  • Lindenwood won the rematch between the teams. The Griffons defeated the Lions 3-1 on September 14.
  • Coach Chad Edwards used several different lineups and played 22 student-athletes throughout the game.

STATS AND LEADERS

  • The Griffons managed only 8 shots, which is their lowest total of the season.
  • Cassidy Menke and Taylor Schwartzkopf led Missouri Western with each having two shots on goal.
  • Lindenwood had seven corner kicks, including the kick that led to the game’s only goal.
  • The offensive struggle led to a physical game Sunday afternoon, as the Lions committed 12 fouls.

Northwest soccer falls to No. 1 Central Missouri

No. 1 Central Missouri defeated the Northwest Missouri State soccer team Sunday 4-1 at Bearcat Pitch. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime, then the Jennies turned up the pressure in the second half.

The Jennies got on the board first on a goal by Makayla Toth, which was assisted by Jada Scott in the 32nd minute. The Bearcats tied it up in the 40th minute on a goal by Joanna Shaw assisted by Emily Madden. The Jennies’ Skylar Drum scored the second goal off an assist by Courtney Killian in the 52nd minute. The Jennies’ last two goals were scored by Jada Scott and assisted by Makayla Toth in the 60th and 72nd minute.

The Bearcats play next at Bearcat Pitch Friday Sept. 28 against Washburn.
