Missouri Western volleyball opens 2018 season Friday

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western volleyball team will travel to Springfield, Illinois for the UIS Capital Classic to begin the 2018 season on Friday. The Griffons will look to continue last year’s success, returning four of six starters from last year’s MIAA Regular Season Championship team. The Griffons also bring back five 2017 All-MIAA selections in Stephanie Doak, Lauren Murphy, Shellby Taylor, Rachel Losch, and Ali Tauchen. Tauchen was also named MIAA Freshman of the Year.

After winning MIAA Coach of the Year in 2017, head coach Marian Carbin will likely use the four matches in Springfield to fill out the two remaining starting spots left by graduating seniors Kayla Ruff and Amanda Dalbey. Carbin may fill those spots with returners from last year’s team or could look to some freshmen to fill the roles.

All four teams Missouri Western will face this weekend finished with winning records in 2017.

Cedarville University Preview
The Yellow Jackets will be coming to Springfield after finishing 2017 with an overall record of 17-16, going 12-5 in the G-MAC. The Yellow Jackets’ opening match against Missouri Western will be the debut of Greg Smith as Cedarville’s head coach. Smith comes to Cedarville with more than 20 years of experience at the NCAA Division I level, most recently as the head coach at the University of Toledo.

McKendree University Preview
McKendree comes to the Capital Classic after being picked fourth in the 2018 GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bearcats finished with an impressive conference record of 16-2 in 2017. Coaching her fifth season for the Bearcats is Nickie Sanlin. Sanlin will look to replace 2017 AVCA All-Americans Amanda Geiger and Arela Williams after both players graduated last spring.

University of Illinois Springfield Preview
The hosting Prairie Stars finished third in the GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll, one spot ahead of McKendree. UIS enters 2018 coming off its best season in program history. Returning for the Prairie Stars this season are 2017 All-GLVC performers Alyssa Hasler and Taylor Bauer. Hasler averaged 1.42 blocks per set in 2017, the third-most in NCAA Division II.

Walsh University (Ohio) Preview
The Cavaliers will bring back all six starters and the libero from last year’s team. Walsh advanced to the G-MAC conference semifinals in 2017, finishing with an overall record of 21-11. Other teams around the conference have high expectations for the Cavaliers, picking Walsh to finish first in the 2018 Great Midwest Preseason Coaches Poll.

Northwest announces M-Club Hall of Fame Class

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The 2018 Northwest Missouri State University M-Club Hall of Fame class has been announced. Four former student-athletes/coaches/administrators and two teams will be inducted this fall.

The Class of 2018’s individual inductees include early age inductee Scott Kurtz (baseball) and modern age inductees Gabby Curtis (women’s basketball), Andy Erpelding (football) and Mel Tjeerdsma (football coach/athletic director). The two teams going into the M-Club will be the 2009-10 men’s tennis team and the 2010-11 women’s basketball squad. The ages have been established to ensure a focus on candidates from throughout the history of Bearcat athletics. The modern age includes candidates from the last 30 years, while the early age includes candidates from 31-plus years and earlier.

The Class of 2018 will be inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame during the annual festivities on Fri., Oct. 12 in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom and will be recognized during the Homecoming football game on Sat., Oct. 13. Tickets for the Friday evening banquet are $25 each and may be purchased by contacting KierstenOrton (korton@nwmissouri.edu) in the athletics office at 660-562-1977. Seating for the event is limited and the deadline to reserve your spot at the banquet is Oct. 5, or until tickets are sold out.

The 2018 class will bring the total of individual inductees to 146. The M-Club Hall of Fame was established for individuals in 1980 and teams were first enshrined beginning in 1989.

Northwest Missouri State announces 2018-19 men’s basketball schedule

The Northwest Missouri State University men’s basketball schedule will feature 14 home games during the 2018-19 season.

The 2018-19 season will get underway with the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri, where the Bearcats will take on the two combatants that took part in the 2018 NCAA Div. II national title game. Northwest will initiate the season against Northern State on Nov. 3 before taking on Ferris State on Nov. 4.

Northwest will play two more games in St. Joseph the following weekend against Winona State on Nov. 10 and Upper Iowa on Nov. 11.

The Bearcats will open the home season in Bearcat Arena Fri., Nov. 16, against the Truman State Bulldogs. Tip is set for 7 p.m.

Following a non-conference tilt against Illinois-Springfield in Kansas City on Nov. 19, the Bearcats will play their next six games at home – including the entire month of December.

MIAA regular season play will commence at home in Bearcat Arena against Lincoln (Dec. 6) and Lindenwood (Dec. 8).

Northwest will also play home MIAA games against Emporia State (Jan. 10), Washburn (Jan. 12), Pittsburg State (Jan. 31), Missouri Southern (Feb. 2), Central Missouri (Feb. 14), Southwest Baptist (Feb. 16) and Missouri Western (Feb. 26).

The Bearcats will take to the road in MIAA action against Northeastern State (Jan. 3), Central Oklahoma (Jan. 5), Missouri Western (Jan. 19), Nebraska-Kearney (Jan. 24), Fort Hays State (Jan. 26), Lindenwood (Feb. 7), Lincoln (Feb. 9), Central Missouri (Feb. 21), Southwest Baptist (Feb. 23) and Washburn (Feb. 28).

The MIAA Tournament is slated for March 7-10 in Kansas City.

Head coach Ben McCollum and the Bearcats will look to continue their string of five consecutive
MIAA regular season titles and three straight MIAA tournament championships. McCollum is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Bearcat program and has compiled a mark of 203-75 overall and 126-52 in MIAA play. Overall, McCollum has guided Northwest to six MIAA regular season crowns.

Northwest went 27-4 overall and 16-3 in MIAA play in 2017-18. The Bearcats had a streak of 23 straight victories stretch from the 2016-17 season into the 2017-18 campaign. Northwest also set the MIAA record for most consecutive home-court wins at 49 last season.

Missouri Western picked second in preseason MIAA soccer poll

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western soccer team was picked second in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll that was released Monday. The Griffons finished with 108 points and one first-place vote.

Last season, the Griffons made history by qualifying for the program’s first-ever NCAA Central Regional. The Griffons ended 2017 with the second-most conference wins (9) in the MIAA, with an overall record of 17-5. The Griffons return two 2017 first team All-MIAA selections in Madeline Cowell and Cassidy Menke. Menke broke her own MWSU single-season scoring record with 15 goals in 2017 and became MWSU’s career goals leader. Menke and Cowell were also both named D2 Conference Commissioner’s Association and United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region. The duo is joined by 2017 third team All-MIAA midfielder Megan Maenner and honorable mention defender Bailey Ketcham.

Central Missouri was the only team slotted ahead of the Griffons in the poll. The 2017 NCAA National Champions and MIAA Champions finished with 121 total points and 11 first-place votes.

Northeastern State was picked third with 98 total points. The RiverHawks tied Missouri Western with nine wins in MIAA competition last season.

Fort Hays State finished fourth in the poll with 88 points, narrowly edging out Central Oklahoma. Missouri Southern landed sixth in the poll. Following Missouri Southern was Washburn. Emporia State was picked eighth and Lindenwood was slotted ninth.

Northwest Missouri, Nebraska Kearney and Southwest Baptist rounded out the 2018 preseason poll.

Griffon soccer will kick off the 2018 season on Aug. 31 in Searcy, Arkansas against Ouachita Baptist University.

Missouri Western picked 2nd in preseason MIAA volleyball poll

ST. JOSEPH – The Missouri Western volleyball was picked second in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll that was released Thursday. The Griffons earned 94 total points with two first-place votes.

Head coach Marian Carbin led the Griffons to a league-best 16 wins in 2017, earning the program its first MIAA Championship in school history. Carbin was named MIAA Coach of the Year last season. Carbin’s sixth Griffon team returns five All-MIAA selections and all but two starters from last year’s NCAA Central Region semifinal team.

Finishing ahead of Missouri Western in the preseason poll was fellow 2017 Co-Champion, Nebraska Kearney. The Lopers earned 108 points and eight first-place votes in the poll.

Central Oklahoma, another 2017 NCAA Central Regional qualifier, landed third behind Nebraska Kearney and Missouri Western. Central Missouri was picked fourth and Washburn finished fifth in the poll, receiving one first place vote.

Rounding out the top-half of the conference poll was Northwest Missouri State. The Bearcats were followed by Lindenwood and Emporia State. Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern each finished with 30 points and tied for ninth place. Fort Hays State and Southwest Baptist rounded out the poll.

The Griffons will begin the 2018 season against Cedarville University at the UIS Capitol Classic on Friday, Aug. 24 in Springfield, Illinois.

Missouri’s Drew Lock on another preseason watch list

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Football senior QB Drew Lock (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Preseason Watch List, announced Tuesday (August 14). This is the fourth major award that Lock is up for after this year earning a spot on the Maxwell, Davey O’Brien Award and Walter Camp Watch Lists earlier this summer.

With Tuesday’s unveiling of the Golden Arm Watch List, every preseason list is now unveiled. In all, Mizzou had 17 total appearances on watch lists with those 17 appearances being comprised of nine different players.

Lock led the SEC in 10 offensive categories a year ago, including passing TDs (44), yards per attempts (10.0), yards per game (304.9), total offense (313.5) and passing efficiency (169.4). He is the SEC and Mizzou single season record holder for passing TDs with 44 in 2017. He also set Mizzou’s single season passing efficiency mark a year ago at 165.67. He was the All-SEC First Team selection at quarterback by both the AP and league’s coaches.

Mizzou Football will open the 2018 season on Sept. 1, 2018, against UT Martin at Memorial Stadium.

KU’s Sims Jr., named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list

TYLER, TEXAS – Kansas football’s Steven Sims Jr., was recognized as the sixth-annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List was announced Tuesday at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce East Texas Kick-Off Luncheon. Sims was one of 47 players named to the 2018 watch list.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

A native of Houston, Texas, Sims led Kansas in both receptions (59) and receiving yards (839) in 2017 and scored six receiving touchdowns. Sims ranked seventh in the Big 12 in receptions last season and 10th in receiving yards per game. His efforts in 2017 landed him All-Big 12 Honorable Mention from the league’s coaches.

Sims heads into the 2018 season ranked fifth in career receiving yards at KU with 2,049, just 260 yards behind second-place receiver Kerry Meier (2006-09) and 1,191 yards behind first-place receiver Dezmon Briscoe (2007-09). Sims also ranks third in career receptions at Kansas (161) and sixth in touchdown receptions (15).

The Watch List announced Tuesday will be narrowed to as many as 16 semifinalists in November and then down to five finalists in December. The finalists will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners. They will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 9, 2019.

Sims and his KU teammates will begin the 2018 season on September 1 vs. Nicholls State. Jayhawk great, Super Bowl Champ and three-time NFL Pro-bowler Chris Harris Jr., will enter the Ring of Honor during KU’s opener versus NSU, and the 2008 Insight Bowl team will also be celebrated.

The Jayhawks will also host nonconference opponent Rutgers on Sept. 15 for Family Weekend and will also celebrate Childhood Cancer Awareness as Todd Reesing, who owns 14 school records and is one of the most decorated players in Kansas history, will have his name etched next to other Jayhawk legends in the Ring of Honor.

Oklahoma State will travel to Lawrence for Homecoming and K-Club Weekend on Sept. 29. The Jayhawks and Cowboys will kick off on Saturday, following Late Night in the Phog on Friday, Sept. 28.

Next up will be Big 12 foe TCU. KU will host the Horned Frogs on Saturday, Oct. 27 for its annual Jayhawks for a Cure game, while Kansas legend and four-time Super Bowl Champion and three-time NFL Pro-Bowler Larry Brown will have his name added to the Ring of Honor and the 1968 Orange Bowl team will be celebrated.

Kansas will host its annual Salute to Service game on Nov. 3 as Iowa State makes its way to DBK Memorial Stadium. The Jayhawks will honor 26 seniors on Friday, Nov. 23 as they play host to Texas at 11 a.m. With the game against UT being played on Black Friday, KU will be offering several Black Friday specials in and around the stadium.

Mizzou releases non-conference women’s hoops schedule; host MWSU in exhibition

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Women’s Basketball announced its 14-game 2018 non-conference schedule on Monday, which features a pair of exhibition games, seven home contests at Mizzou Arena and a Thanksgiving weekend tournament in southwest Florida.

Head Coach Robin Pingeton’s squad will potentially face up to 10 teams that advanced to the postseason in 2017-18, including three who reached the NCAA Tournament. Mizzou’s challenging nonconference slate will include seven matchups with programs that recorded at least 20 wins a season ago, and five who finished in the top-70 of the final 2017-18 RPI.

After starting the season with exhibition games against Missouri Western (Oct. 29) and Washburn (Nov. 1), Mizzou will hit the road for its first regular season contest of the season at Western Illinois on Nov. 6. After facing WIU, Mizzou returns home for a three-game home stand against Missouri State (Nov. 14), Wisconsin-Green Bay (Nov. 16) and SIU Edwardsville (Nov. 18). In Mizzou’s matchup with Missouri State, the Tigers will look to win its 10th straight home opener dating back to the 2009-10 season as the two programs meet for the 28th time, with Mizzou holding a 19-8 advantage.

On Thanksgiving weekend, Mizzou will head south to Fort Myers, Fla., for an eight-team tournament at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Mizzou will open with a matchup against Michigan on Nov. 23. In the second round, Mizzou will face either Texas or Quinnipiac on Nov. 24, followed by a third game on Nov. 25. All three teams made the NCAA Tournament last season with Michigan and Quinnipiac advancing to the second round, while Texas made it to the Sweet 16. The Tigers are guaranteed a third game on Nov. 25 with the opponent to be determined based on game results.

Following Mizzou’s trip to the Sunshine State, the squad will kick off December by participating in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge for the second consecutive season with a road matchup against West Virginia on Dec. 2. The Mountaineers are coming off a 25-12 season in which they advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s NIT. The matchup will be the second meeting between the two schools, as the Tigers look to even the series following an 85-75 defeat in the 1996 Paradise Classic in Manoa, Hawai’i.

Mizzou will face in-state opponents in back-to-back games on Dec. 6 and Dec. 9, first hosting UMKC followed by a road contest at Saint Louis on Dec. 9. Mizzou has dominated the matchups with the two programs on opposite sides of the Show Me State, as it owns a 31-2 combined mark against the two programs (20-1 vs. Saint Louis, 11-1 vs. UMKC). A season ago, Mizzou defeated Saint Louis, 70-58, on Dec. 8, at Mizzou Arena behind a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) from senior Sophie Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.).

The Tigers will wrap up their nonconference slate with three of its final four games coming at Mizzou Arena. Mizzou will host South Dakota (Dec. 15), Texas State (Dec. 17) and Arkansas State (Dec. 30), with a road matchup against border rival Illinois (Dec. 21) sandwiched in between. Last season, Mizzou and Illinois rekindled its series for the first time since 2008 as the Tigers defeated the Illini, 72-55.

Northwest Missouri State ranked fifth in preseason AFCA top 25 poll

WACO, TEX.– After claiming their first-ever Division II national championship in 2017, Texas A&M-Commerce will start the 2018 season ranked No. 1 in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. This is the first time since the poll began in 2000 that the Lions start the season ranked No. 1. West Florida, who lost to Texas A&M-Commerce in the championship game, begins this year at No. 2. The Argonauts are followed by Minnesota State at No. 3, Indiana (Pa.) at No. 4 and Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri State tied at No. 5.

The first week of action starts off with four Top 25 matchups, all on Thursday, August 30th. The first game has No. 2 West Florida hosting No. 22 Carson-Newman (Tenn.) while No. 4 Indiana (Pa.) travels to No. 15 Ashland (Ohio). The third Top 25 matchup is a conference battle as No. 5t Fort Hays State (Kan.) plays host to No. 18 Central Missouri. The final matchup has No. 10 Grand Valley State (Mich.) hosting No. 13 Indianapolis (Ind.).

K-State’s Walker named to Hendricks Award watch list

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State junior defensive end Reggie Walker was one of 36 players in the nation, and one of five in the Big 12, to be named to the watch list for the 2018 Ted Hendricks Award, the Ted Hendricks Foundation announced Monday.

Walker is a preseason candidate for the award that honors the top defensive end in college football for a second-straight year. He is the third Wildcat to be up for the award multiple times, joining Ian Campbell (2006-08) and Ryan Mueller (2013-14).

A Second Team All-Big 12 performer by the league’s coaches in 2017, Walker started 12 games as a sophomore, recording 36 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. He played his best toward the end of the season when he logged 12 tackles, 4.0 TFLs and his two sacks in a two-game span against Kansas and Texas Tech.

A native of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, Walker was the 2016 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year after totaling 11.5 TFLs and 6.5 sacks.

The Wildcats open the 2018 campaign on Saturday, September 1, when they host South Dakota at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
