Savannah loses to Westminster 10-0 in Class 4 baseball semifinals

The Savannah baseball team lost to Westminster Christian Academy Thursday 10-0 in the Class 4 semifinals in O’Fallon.

The Savages were back in the Final Four for the first time since 2012 as they end their season 25-2.

After a scoreless first inning Thursday, Westminster took the early lead with five runs in the bottom of the second off Savannah starter Braden Berry. Berry failed to make it out of the second inning as he allowed six runs on eights hits.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to run-rule the Savages.

Savannah was held to just four hits as Jadon Brady, Chase Spoonemore, Colby Dennis and Micah Diamond each had a single.

Westminster improves to 29-6 and they’ll play St. Francis Borgia in the Class 4 state championship Friday at 1:30 p.m. St. Francis Borgia defeated Helias Catholic 5-0 in the first semifinal on Thursday.

Savannah defeats Pembroke Hill to advance to Class 4 Final Four

The Savannah baseball team is headed to the Class 4 semifinals for the first time since 2012 as they defeated Pembroke Hill Thursday 7-3 in the quarterfinals at Raytown South High School.

The Savages improve to 25-1 this season and they play their Final Four game next Thursday at CarShield Field in O’Fallon at 6:30 p.m.

Savannah will play either Westminster Christian Academy or St. Dominic. Those two play their quarterfinal game Friday at 4:15 p.m. at St. Dominic High School.

Helias Catholic has also advanced to the semifinals as they’ll play either Sikeston or St. Francis Borgia at 4:00 p.m. next Thursday.

MSHSAA Track and Field championships moved to Saturday at three sites

Columbia, Mo. – The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA)’s Class 3, 4 and 5 Track & Field Championships will be held on Saturday now because of damage done from a tornado that hit Jefferson City Wednesday.

Originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday (May 24 & 25) at Dennis Licklider Track Complex in Jefferson City, the championships will now be held at three different sites.

The Class 3 Championships will be held at Audrey J. Walton Track & Field facility on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia. All Para-events will also be held at Walton Track.

The Class 4 Championships will be held at Washington High School in Washington, Mo.

The Class 5 Championships will be held at Battle High School in Columbia, Mo.

Gates will be opened at 8 a.m. as all field events will begin at 9 a.m. The running events will begin at 10 a.m. Admission for the day will be $8 for anyone over the age of 5.

For those traveling to Washington, please note that the bridge crossing over the Missouri River will be closed Saturday morning. An alternate route will be needed.

Savannah baseball advances to Quarterfinals; LeBlond knocked out by Silex

The Savannah and Bishop LeBlond baseball teams continued postseason play Wednesday.

Savannah advanced to the Class 4 Quarterfinals as they defeated St. Pius X 9-5 Wednesday in their Sectional game at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy.

The Savages improve to 24-1 and they’ll face Pembroke Hill in the Quarterfinals Thursday. That first pitch will be at 5:00 p.m. from Raytown South High School.

And at Phil Welch Stadium in St. Joseph Wednesday, Bishop LeBlond hosted Silex in the Class 2 Quarterfinals and they lost to the Owls 12-8. The Golden Eagles end their season 8-13.

Musser leaves Central HS to become boys basketball coach at Liberty North

St. Joseph Central High School is in search of a new boys basketball coach as Cy Musser has resigned from CHS and he’s been hired as the boys basketball coach at Liberty North High School.

Musser, who is a St. Joseph native and a Benton High School graduate, has been the head coach at Central for seven seasons and he went 81-101 overall and 28-42 in the Suburban League. Musser led the Indians to a conference championship this past season as they went 13-11 and 8-3 in league play.

Musser will be the second coach in Liberty North history as he takes over for Chris McCabe, who left to become the head men’s basketball coach at William Jewell College in Liberty. McCabe had been the head coach of the Eagles since the school was established in 2010.

Lafayette graduate Caleb Bennett transferring to Missouri Western

Lafayette High School graduate Caleb Bennett announced on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that he will be returning to St. Joseph to play basketball at Missouri Western this fall.

The former Fighting Irish All-Stater has spent the last two season at Division I Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Bennett tore his ACL this past season for the Mountain Hawks as he played in 23 games and averaged 4.7 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. As a freshman during the 2017-2018 season, Bennett played in 30 games and made one start. He averaged 5.5 points and 2.3 rebounds and shot 41.2 percent from the three-point line.

Bennett graduated from Lafayette in 2017 and was first team All-State as a senior after averaging 16.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

When Bennett signs his letter of intent with Missouri Western he’ll be the sixth recruit in the Class of 2019 and the first transfer for MWSU head coach Sundance Wicks.
