Lafayette boys, Benton girls each lose in the Class 4 sectionals

The Lafayette boys and Benton girls each came up short in their Class 4 sectional games on Tuesday at Liberty North high school. The Fighting Irish lost to Kansas City Southeast 61-55, while the no. 1 ranked Cardinals were upset by Lincoln Prep 51-34.

After falling behind early Tuesday night, Lafayette battled back and took a 28-25 lead at the half against Southeast. But the Fighting Irish struggled with turnovers in the third quarter and the Knights outscored LHS 20-12 in the quarter and never trailed again.

Ike Book led Lafayette with 17 points as they end their season 18-8.

The Benton girls struggled all night Tuesday against Lincoln Prep and they never led in the game. The Cardinals made just two first half field goals as they were down 15-3 after the first quarter and 29-8 at halftime.

Benton wasn’t able to make a serious ran at Lincoln Prep as they trailed 31-15 after three quarter and never got the deficit under 11 points.

Gabby Fuller led the Cardinals with 12 as they end their season 23-3.

Benton girls, Lafayette boys win district championships Friday

The Benton girls and Lafayette boys each won a Class 4 District 16 championship Friday night at Winnetonka High School.

The Cardinals clobbered Smithville 54-36 for their fifth district title in six years, while the Fighting Irish won their fourth straight district championship with a 57-53 victory over Winnetonka.

In the girls game, Benton scored the first eight points of the game and they were never threatened. The Cardinals led 20-10 after the first quarter and then extended the lead to 39-19 at halftime. Smithville only got as close as 11 points in the second half as Benton improves to 23-2 this season.

Gabby Fuller led the Cards with 25 points as they advance to the Class 4 Sectionals Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. against Lincoln Prep at Liberty North High School.

In the boys game, Lafayette had to rally for a win against the Griffins. Winnetonka led the back-and-forth game after three quarter, but the Fighting Irish then used a 14-0 run to start the fourth quarter and they never trailed again.

Ike Book led Lafayette with 22 points as they improve to 18-7. The Fighting Irish will play Kansas City Southeast at 7:30 Tuesday at Liberty North High School.

Lafayette boys defeat Benton to advance to district championship game

The Lafayette boys basketball team advanced to the Class 4 District championship game with a 59-41 win over Benton Tuesday at Winnetonka High School.

The Fighting Irish improves to 17-7, while the Cardinals’ season comes to an end at 11-15.

Lafayette will play Winnetonka in the championship game Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Griffins won the other semifinal game Tuesday night over Platte County 54-50.

The girls championship game will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday as Benton will play Smithville. Both championship games will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ.
