ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Lafayette high school Senior Caleb Bennett officially signed his letter of intent Thursday to play basketball at Lehigh University.
Bennett led the Fighting Irish in scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks last season as a junior. He averaged 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, and also had 62 steals and 19 blocked shots. Bennett shot 49.2% from the field, 40.2% from the three-point line and 73.2% from the free throw line.
Bennett helped Lafayette go 28-4 last season as they finished as the state runner-up in Class 4, losing in the state championship game to Vashon. He and the Fighting Irish also won their fourth consecutive MEC title.
Lehigh is a Division I University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and they’re a member of the Patriot League. Last year they finished 17-15 and were 13-5 in conference play.
Missouri Western track and field coach Marc Beirbaum signed St. Joseph Central senior Jordan Garr to a letter of intent Wednesday.
Garr will compete in the shot put and discus at Western as he qualified for the state meet in both events last year as a junior. He finished fourth at state in the shot put after winning the district championship.
Garr set the shot put school record at Central last year with a throw of 57 feet 3 inches.
Garr is the first athlete from St. Joseph to sign with the newly formed track and field team at Missouri Western. The Griffons will begin competing next season during the 2017-2018 school year.

St. Joseph, Missouri (October 19, 2016) – There are some students who set the bar. They work harder, show more passion and lead by example—in the classroom, on the field and within the community. Wednesday, Wendy’s High School Heisman recognizes Saxton Thuston from Benton High School and his dedication to never cutting corners by naming him Benton High School’s Winner.
“Saxton is known by his teachers and friends for his commitment to excellence. We are excited and honored that a program like Wendy’s High School Heisman is also recognizing his hard work,” said Principal, Beery Johnson, of Benton High School.
Since 1994, Wendy’s and the Heisman Trophy Trust have been running the same play to perfection: honoring more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed students. This year, Wendy’s will celebrate the accomplishments of thousands of the best high school seniors, awarding winners in five phases.
Both School Winners and State Finalists were announced Wednesday. School Winners will receive a School Winner certificate and a Wendy’s High School Heisman Patch. State Finalists will receive a bronze medal, a Wendy’s High School Heisman State Finalist patch and a $25 gift card. From the group of State Finalists, one senior male and female will be selected from each state and announced as State Winners on October 20.
