Class 6, 8-Man state football championship games moving to Mizzou’s Faurot Field

MSHSAAThe Missouri State High School Activities Association has announced that the football state championship games for Class 6 and 8-Man will be held at Faurot Field in Columbia this season.

The games will take place on Friday, November 18 at the University of Missouri after the MSHSAA Board of Directors voted in June to hold the Class 6 and 8-Man games at the same venue and eliminate the bye the two classes traditionally had between the semifinals and the championship games.

Missouri State University will still host the championship games for Classes 1-5 on November 25-26 at Plaster Stadium.  Springfield was originally selected to host all of the 11-man state title games.

This will be the first time the 11-man title games haven’t been played inside the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis since 1995, while the 8-Man game moved to St. Louis in 2008.

Rosters announced for Missouri 8-Man Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at MWSU

riggertFootballThe Missouri 8-Man Football Coaches Association will be hosting its sixth annual Missouri 8-Man Football Senior All Star Game on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Spratt Stadium on Missouri Western University’s campus in St. Joseph, MO.

Thirty-nine of Missouri’s top 8-Man senior football players have been invited to participate in this event. They will report Thursday, July 7, 2016 to Missouri Western and practice for three days as a member of either the Green or Grey team in preparation for the event.

The teams will be coached by 8-Man football coaches from the eight teams that made the state semi-finals in 2015. Once again, Coach Jonathan Schoonover of North Andrew leads the Grey Team. He is assisted by Tyler Anderson of Southwest Ludlow, Kirk Thacker of

Norborne/Hardin-Central, and Steve Juhl of St. Joseph Christian. The Green Team is led by Coach Shane Hilton of Stanberry. His assistants are Doug Fountain of Albany, Chris Healy of Worth County and Ross Hastert of Rock Port. The players were drafted by the coaches; thereby pitting previous teammates against one another in certain instances.

Admission is $7.00 per person. Gates open up at 5:30 p.m. T-shirts will be for sale throughout the contest. All proceeds go to the Missouri 8-Man Football Coaches Association. For more information, please check the Association’s home page at http://www.mo8mancoaches.com/.

Jason Simpson has been named the new Activities Director at Lafayette High School.

The St. Joseph School District said  Simpson replaces Paul Woolard, who recently was named Assistant Principal at Central

“Jason Simpson graduated from Lafayette High School, began his coaching career here and understands the north side, our families and our students. We are excited to have him return as an administrator at Lafayette and think he will be a wonderful addition to our team,” said Dr. Tyran
Sumy, Principal.

Simpson has been with the St. Joseph School District as a business educator since 2005 at Central High School. Simpson started his coaching career at Lafayette High School from 2004-
2005 as Assistant Basketball Coach. He also was a three-sport coach for many years at Central High School in football, basketball, and tennis.

University. He received his B.S. in Business Administration from Central Missouri State
University.

Simpson will start the new position with the district July 1, 2016.

Lafayette’s rally comes up short against Boonville in Class 4 Quarterfinals

LafayetteThe Lafayette baseball team had its season come to an end Thursday night as they lost at Boonville 7-5 in the Class 4 Quarterfinals.

The Fighting Irish finish the season with a 19-5 record, but made history in 2016 by advancing to their first-ever quarterfinal playoff game.  Boonville improves to 25-5 and they’ll play Fulton the Final Four Friday, June 3 in O’Fallon.  Fulton defeated Duchesne 8-6 in their Class 4 Quarterfinal.

Lafayette took a 1-0 lead in the first innning, but Boonville responded with seven unanswered runs to take a 7-1 lead after four innings.

The Irish rallied with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and then scored two in the seventh but that was all they could get.

Christian Coder, Nick Ryan and Cameron Richardson each had two hits to lead Lafayette.

The Lafayette head boys basketball coach and an assistant coach were approved for hire after the Board of Education Work Session on Wednesday.

Lafayette High School announced Ryan Nichols as head boys basketball coach and Michael Gholston Jr. as assistant coach.

“Coach Nichols will be a great fit for our program,” said Dr. Tyran Sumy, Lafayette principal. “We look forward to Coach Nichols and Coach Gholston joining our storied basketball program. We are proud to welcome them to our northside family.”

Nichols has been the head basketball coach at Oak Park High School since 2012. In his first year, Oak Park improved from a 5-win team to 11 wins. Nichols also groomed several players for the college ranks. From 2009-2012, Nichols was the head coach at DeKalb High School, and led the team to two district and sectional championships, set a school record of 26 wins, and finished with a seventh place ranking in his final season.

Nichols holds a Masters of Science in Education from Rockhurst University, and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 2004.

“I have always admired the tradition, pride, and success of the Lafayette basketball program,” said Coach Nichols. “What Chris, Daryl, and the players have accomplished over the last nine years has been incredible. I’m honored to have the opportunity to carry the torch for this great program and its rich history.”

Michael Gholston, Jr. is currently the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at Raytown South High School. During the 2014-15 school year, he served as head junior varsity basketball coach and assistant varsity for Oak Park High School.

Gholston holds a Masters of Science in Sport Studies and Athletic Administration from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and received his BA in Communications Studies from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2012.
