Benton’s Smith, Lafayette’s Kirby sign letters of intent to play college basketball

riggertBasketballTwo St. Joseph high school seniors signed letters of intent on Wednesday to play college basketball next season.

Benton’s Fabian Smith signed with Malcolm X College in Chicago, while Lafayette’s O’Shaye Kirby will play at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa.

Smith has been a three-year starter for the Cardinals and led Benton in scoring and assists last season as he averaged 15.4 points and 2.9 assists per game.  The 6’2″ guard helped the Cards with a big turnaround as they finished 14-11 after winning just 11 games total in the previous three seasons.

Kirby had a breakout season in 2014-2015 for Lafayette as he played in just 16 games as a junior and scored ten total points for the Class 4 runners-up.  But as a senior, the 6’4″ forward averaged 9.3 points per game and led the Fighting Irish in rebounding at 6.8 per contest, as he helped LHS to a 20-5 record and the No. 1 ranking in Class 4 entering the postseason.

Malcolm X is a NJCAA Division I team and they finished 17-14 this past season, while Southwestern is Division II in the NJCAA and they went 23-10 last season.

Central hires Jared Boone as girls’ basketball coach

Central10Central High School has hired Jared Boone as its next girls’ basketball coach.

Boone was the top assistant coach for the Indians the last two seasons under Jessica French, who resigned at the end of the season.

Boone is a St. Joseph native as he graduated from Benton High School.  He went on to play college basketball at North Central Missouri College for two years and he finished his career at Lincoln University.

Boone was an assistant coach for the Central boys for one season before moving over to the girls side the last two years.

The Indians went 7-18 last season and 3-7 in Suburban League play, but they’ll bring back a strong nucleus as they had just two seniors on the roster.

The Northwest Missouri State women’s basketball program announced on Wednesday that Benton High School senior Mallory McAndrews has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Bearcats next season.

The 5’7” guard was a three-year starter for the Cardinals and she helped Benton to the Class 4 Final Four during his junior season and to the Class 4 Quarterfinals as a senior.

McAndrews averaged 13.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game this past season, while shooting 40 percent from the three-point line. The Cardinals finished 26-3 as they lost to Bolivar in the quarterfinals. She also led the team in scoring as a junior when she scored 14.7 point per game and shot 39 percent from the three-point line, and Benton finished 20-10.

Northwest also announced Wednesday that 5’9” guard Arbrieal Benson from Benson High School in Omaha has signed a letter of intent. The late signing period began on Wednesday for high school and junior college players to sign national letters of intent to play college basketball next season.

Those two will join a Bearcat team that went 8-20 last season and finished 4-15 in the MIAA. Northwest failed to qualify for the MIAA Tournament as Michael Smith wrapped up his second season in Maryville.
