McFadden sets strikeout record as Savannah rolls past Marshall for third

Blake McFadden closed out his Savannah high school career in impressive fashion Saturday in Springfield as he and his teammates defeated Marshall, 10-0, to win the third-place game at the Class 3 state baseball tournament.

McFadden threw a complete-game one-hitter to improve to 10-0 this season and the future Kansas State Wildcat struck out an MSHSAA and school record 18 batters en route to the victory.

He also went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI.  Clayton McGinness added two hits and an RBI, while Zane Wilt doubled and drove in two runs.

Savannah scored three unearned runs in the first inning and added four more in the second on three hits to take an early 7-0 lead.  That was more than enough for McFadden as the Savages scored three more runs in the seventh for cap off their 2012 season.

Savannah finishes 24-5 as they made it to back-to-back Class 3 Final Fours and had back-to-back 24 win seasons.

Savannah’s rally falls short against Lutheran South in Class 3 semifinals

The Savannah baseball team lost in the Class 3 semifinals Friday afternoon in Springfield as the fell to Lutheran South 8-6.

The Savages rallied from an 8-2 deficit and put the tying runs on base in the sixth inning, but Savannah was unable to get those runs in and they dropped into the third-place game on Saturday.

Savannah got off to a great start as they took a 2-0 lead on four base hits in the top of the first inning.  Tyler Wilt and Caleb Bounds each had RBI singles as Blake McFadden and Zane Wilt scored for the Savages.

Lutheran South answered right back though with four runs on just one hit.  Tyler Wilt started the game for Savannah, but he walked four batter in the opening inning and last just 1.2 innings as he allowed four runs and walked six batters total.

The Lancers added three two-out runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth before the Savages started their rally.

Zane Wilt hit a double that scored Blake McFadden in the fifth inning and Savannah scored three more in the sixth.

The first five batters hit singles for the savages in the sixth inning as they pulled to within two runs.

With Andy Meyers at second base and McFadden at first base, Savannah had the tying runs on base with no outs but Lutheran South’s Dirk Otterstein struck out Zane Wilt, got Tyler Wilt to ground out and Clayton Holt struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Savages fall to 23-5 and they’ll play Marshall for third-place in Class 3 on Saturday at 10:00 AM.  The game will air live on ESPN 1550.

Savannah rolls into Class 3 Final Four with 9-3 win over Oak Grove

The Savannah baseball team advanced to the Class 3 Final Four for the second consecutive year as the Savages defeated Oak Grove, 9-3, in their quarterfinal game Thursday night at Missouri Western’s Spring Sports Complex.

Savannah’s Blake McFadden broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a three-run double as the Savages scored four in the inning and never looked back.

They added three two-out runs in the fifth inning as McFadden drove in two more runs with a triple and Savannah led 8-1 after five.

Oak Grove scored two runs in the sixth inning, but McFadden come on in relief and retired the last six batters of the game as he struck out five and didn’t allow a hit.

Tyler Wilt went 5+ innings to improve to 5-2 as he allowed three runs and six hits.  Wilt also struck out four and walked four.

Caleb Bounds had two hits and two RBI for Savannah, while Clayton McGinness, Blake Deal and Andy Meyers all scored two runs in the game.

The Savages improve to 23-4 this season and they’ll play Friday, June 1 in Springfield in the first Class 3 semifinal.  Savannah’s opponent is yet to be determined as Kennett will play Lutheran South Friday for the final spot in the Final Four.

Defending champion Westminster Academy and Marshall will play in the other Class 3 semifinal in Springfield.

Savannah’s game next week will be broadcast live on ESPN 1550 AM.

Savannah defeats Richmond to advance to Class 3 Quarterfinals

The Savannah baseball team won its Class 3 Sectional game Tuesday at Phil Welch Stadium as they hung on for a 3-2 victory over Richmond.

The Savages improve to 22-4 and advance to the quarterfinals against Oak Grove Thursday at Phil Welch.

Blake McFadden threw a complete game as he improved to 9-0 on the season.  He struck out 14, walked five batters and allowed three base hits.

Savannah scored all three runs in the third inning as they used a walk and two errors to load the bases.  Zane Wilt then drove in two runs with a single and Tyler Wilt had an RBI ground out.

Richmond answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but that was as close as they’d get.

Savannah had just four hits in the game, while Richmond had three.  The Spartans end their season 18-3.

The first pitch between Savannah and Oak Grove will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday and it’ll air live on ESPN 1550.

LeBlond & Savannah win district titles Wednesday

The Bishop LeBlond and Savannah baseball teams each captured district championships Wednesday night in St. Joseph.

In the Class 2 District 16 title at Missouri Western’s Spring Sports Complex, LeBlond downed West Platte 9-6 to advance to sectionals for the second time in three years.  The Eagles are now 13-9 this season and they’ll play Monday against the winner of Distrcit 15, as Lafayette County and Summit Christian plays their title game Thursday.

In the Class 3 District 16 championship game at Phil Welch Stadium, Savannah avenged an earlier loss to Smithville with a 4-1 victory for its second straight district title.  The Savages improve to 21-4 and will play Richmond in their sectional game Tuesday.

Blake McFadden threw a complete-game one-hitter as he struck out 16 batters and didn’t allow a walk.

Savannah broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning as Tyler Wilt and Preston Bailey had RBI singles, and Clayton Holt drove in two runs with a double.

McFadden’s no-hitter was broken up by Eric Gromacki with a single up the middle to lead of the seventh.

Bishop LeBlond names Jeff Sullivan girls basketball coach

Bishop LeBlond High School Principal Solon Haynes has announced the selection of Jeff Sullivan as the school’s varsity girls basketball coach. Sullivan has been the junior varsity and varsity assistant coach at Central High School the past seven years.

Haynes said he was pleased to get someone with Sullivan’s experience and his connections to the Bishop LeBlond community. “Jeff brings more than 12 years of basketball coaching experience as well as a relationship with Catholic education,” Haynes said. “Jeff’s wife Poppy Barbosa Sullivan is a 1996 graduate of LeBlond, his children attend St. Francis Xavier elementary school, and he spent a year here as a girls assistant coach working with Randy Grosdidier.”

Sullivan worked his way up within the Central High School boys basketball program beginning as the sophomore coach for one year in 2002, then spending two years as the freshman coach, and has been the JV and varsity assistant coach the past seven years. He also has been an assistant boys and girls soccer coach at Central since 2000. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University and a master’s in secondary education leadership from Northwest Missouri State University.

Sullivan said he looks forward to working with the LeBlond student-athletes, the staff and the extended school community. “I am very excited for the opportunity to carry on, and add to, the tradition of Bishop LeBlond girls basketball,” he said.

Sullivan will begin his duties as LeBlond’s coach at the conclusion of this academic year. He will continue to teach physical education at Central.
