Royals score final six runs to rally past Cleveland

CLEVELAND (AP) — Andrew Miller, activated from the disabled list before the game, gave up Salvador Perez’s two-run homer in the seventh inning and the Kansas City Royals rallied to defeat the Cleveland Indians 10-9 on Friday night.

Miller, making his first appearance since straining his left hamstring April 25, allowed his first runs of the season and the Royals rallied from a 9-4 deficit.

Miller (1-1) entered the game in the seventh with a one-run lead, but walked Jon Jay on a 3-2 pitch. Jorge Soler and Mike Moustakas struck out before Perez hit a 1-1 pitch onto the home run porch in left field. Miller, who had pitched 10 scoreless innings before the injury, was removed following the homer.

The Indians have lost five of six. Cleveland went 5-9 and its bullpen had a 9.50 ERA while Miller was sidelined. Indians manager Terry Francona said consideration was given to have Miller make a couple of minor league rehab assignments, but the decision was made to activate the star left-hander.

Alcides Escobar had four RBI for Kansas City while Lucas Duda doubled three times and drove in a run. Jay had two RBI and Moustakas had three hits.

Brad Keller (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings for his first major league win. Kelvin Herrera retired the side in order in the ninth for his eighth save.

Michael Brantley’s grand slam capped a six-run fourth inning that gave Cleveland a 9-4 lead.

Brantley ended an eight-pitch at-bat by hitting a 2-2 delivery from Jason Hammel into the right field seats for his second grand slam this month and of his career. He also hit a game-tying grand slam in the ninth inning against Texas on May 1.

Kansas City scored a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Shortstop Francisco Lindor’s throwing error to start the sixth made two of the runs unearned. Rookie center fielder Greg Allen dropped a line drive in the third, leading to another unearned run.

Tyler Naquin’s two-run double in the fourth gave Cleveland a 5-4 lead. Jose Ramirez and Yonder Alonso homered in the first against Hammel, who hasn’t won since September 6, 2017, a stretch of 12 starts.

Indians starter Trevor Bauer allowed five runs and a career-high 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Hammel gave up nine runs, including three homers in 3 2/3 innings.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Mizzou wins series opener at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mizzou Baseball scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings as it rallied to defeat South Carolina, 5-3, Friday night in the opener of a three-game series. It was Mizzou’s first ever win at Carolina’s Founders Park and Mizzou’s 14th over an RPI top-50 team this season. The Tigers snap a three-game skid and improve to 31-18 and 10-15 in SEC play.

Mizzou senior reliever RHP Andy Toelken earned the win, his fifth of the season. He entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning as Mizzou was clinging to a 3-1 lead. He struck out the first batter he faced and wound up pitching 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Junior RHP Nile Ball earned his sixth save of the season.

South Carolina starter Logan Chapman took the loss as he falls to 3-1 on the year. The Gamecocks fall to 28-21 on the year and 13-12 in league games.

TURNING POINT

It was a typical Friday night SEC pitcher’s duel for the first South Carolina took advantage of a two-out RBI single by L.T. Tolbert as he dropped a 0-2 pitch into left center to score Jonah Bride from second base. Bride hit a one-out double earlier in the frame, also on a 0-2 pitch. Mizzou starter LHP T.J. Sikkema limited the damage by stranding a pair, but Carolina took the lead after that frame.

Mizzou countered in the next half inning as the bottom of the order got a rally going. Connor Brumfield walked to open the frame and Alex Samples singled. After a sacrifice bunt from nine-hole man Chris Cornelius, leadoff man Brian Sharp roped a two-run single on the first pitch thrown by reliever Eddie Demurias to put Mizzou on top, 2-1. Brett Bond added another RBI single as Mizzou took a 3-1 lead at the midway point.

South Carolina countered by getting the first two men on aboard vs. Sikkema in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mizzou starter then struck out two-hole man Carlos Cortes and three-hole hitter Madison Stokes. He walked the bases loaded and head coach Steve Bieser went to the bullpen for senior RHP Andy Toelken. He struck out Justin Row on the 10th pitch of the at-bat to strand the bases loaded.

Sophomore SS Chris Cornelius hit a two-run single in the next inning as Mizzou pulled away.

Royals lose series finale at Baltimore 11-6

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles are finally riding another winning streak, five weeks after their last one.

Adam Jones homered, scored three runs and had three RBI, and Baltimore outslugged the Kansas City Royals 11-6 Thursday night.

Manny Machado and Trey Mancini also went deep for the Orioles, who trailed 4-0 in the first inning and 6-3 in the second before rallying to beat the Royals for the second night in a row. The only other time Baltimore (10-27) won successive games this season was April 5-6 at Yankee Stadium.

“Obviously, we’ve got a long way to go. We know that,” Mancini said. “You just try to string some wins together and maybe be in a decent spot.”

The Orioles had seven extra-base hits and eclipsed their previous season high of eight runs by the fourth inning.

That was enough to overcome another awful start by Chris Tillman, who yielded six runs and got only four outs. With a 1-5 record and a 10.46 ERA, his time in the rotation — or on the roster — may be coming to an end.

“Same challenges he’s had: stuff was a little short and command was short. That’s a bad combination,” manager Buck Showalter said. “It’s tough to watch him struggle like that, especially with the success he’s had in the past.”

Tillman was 16-6 in 2016 and is 2-12 since.

“I’m just not getting it done. It’s not good right now,” he said.

Miguel Castro (1-1) replaced Tillman and blanked Kansas City over 4 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season.

“Castro came in and neutralized us,” Kansas City manager Ned Yost said.

Salvador Perez hit a grand slam for the Royals, who were seeking their second series win of the year.

“We had a good first inning with the grand slam, and I said, `Here we go,” Yost said.

By the fourth inning, Kansas City trailed 9-6.

Ian Kennedy (1-4) gave up eight hits, including three home runs. The nine runs he allowed were the second-most of his career.

“The guys scored a bunch of runs for me and I can’t hold it,” the right-hander said. “I’m really disappointed.”

After starting Tuesday night’s game at Camden Yards with a 10-run first inning, the Royals settled for a four-run first in the finale. A single and two walks set the table for Perez, who ripped an 0-2 pitch from Tillman over the right-field scoreboard.

Machado connected with a man on in the bottom half to make it 4-3, but Tillman gave up a two-run single by Jorge Soler in the second, prompting his early exit.

Jones hit a two-run shot in the third to get Baltimore to 6-5, and the Orioles completed the comeback in the fourth.

After Chance Sisco doubled in two runs, Mancini followed with his fourth home run.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: CF Abraham Almonte did not play because he was still experiencing symptoms of the illness that caused him to be removed from Wednesday night’s game. … RHP Justin Grimm (back stiffness) threw a bullpen session and could start a rehab assignment next week, Yost said.

Orioles: DH Pedro Alvarez hurt his hamstring on the bases and was replaced in the fifth inning. … An MRI on RHP Darren O’Day’s hyperextended elbow was “remarkably clean,” Showalter said. There is no indication yet whether O’Day can come off the DL when eligible on May 16. … INF Engelb Vielma fractured his kneecap when he tripped over the bullpen mound while chasing a foul ball in a minor league game. Vielma played in six games with Baltimore this season.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Perez hit his second career grand slam on his 28th birthday . He is the 16th different KC player to homer on his birthday, and only the second to hit a slam. Mike Sweeney did it on July 22, 2004.

UP NEXT

Royals: Still looking for his first win, Jason Hammel (0-4, 4.78 ERA) makes his eighth start of the year Friday night as KC opens a three-game series in Cleveland.

Orioles: Kevin Gausman (2-2, 3.30) helps Baltimore open a four-game series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night. The right-hander has lowered his ERA in each of his last six starts.

Northwest women’s basketball signs five student-athletes

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University head women’s basketball coach Austin Meyer has announced five additions, Kendey Eaton, Erika Schlosser, Kira Mosley, Caitlyn Jordon and Sidney Brastad to the 2018-19 Bearcat roster.

“We are very excited with the pieces we have added in such a short time. First and foremost, this is a group that consists of high character individuals and a group that has held themselves to very high standards academically,” said Meyer. “Multiple athletes in this class won HS State Championships and each has been part of successful teams.”

Eaton, a 5’6″ Guard, spent the past 2 season at North Central Missouri College after leading Mound City HS to its first ever State Championship in 2016. At NCMC, she averaged 18 ppg, 4.5 rpg, & 3.4 apg over the last 2 seasons including a 40%+ clip from behind the arc. Her 4 year record at Eastview was 117-11 overall. This included a state championship in 2013-2014 and a state runner up in 2014-2015. Schlosser was a 2 year captain and earned All-Conference 3 of her 4 years. She earned Academic All State & was a MNGBB 4A All Star her senior season. She finished her career as the school’s all time leader in assists (317) and tied for the single season 3 point percentage record at 53.3%.

“Kendey and Erika both handle the ball well, shoot it at a high level and are good distributers. Kendey’s point guard experience on a championship junior college team will be a plus. We really liked Erika’s toughness and ability to defend as well. Each of them have a strong desire to get better and they want to be in the gym. Both have 2 years of college experience and will have an immediate impact on our team.”

Mosley, a 6’2″ Guard/Forward, helped Hopkins HS (MN) to a Class 4A State Runner up & a 31-4 overall record her senior season under Coach Brian Cosgriff. She averaged nearly 8 points and 4 rebounds per game in limited minutes following an injury after her Junior season. During a full 2016-2017 season she averaged 15 ppg, 5 rpg, & 2 apg. Mosley was named to the All Conference Team as a junior. She also made the Academic Honor Roll & was a member of the Diversity Club.

Jordon, a 5’10” Forward, was a 2x All District & 2x All Conference selection at Neosho HS under Coach Grant Berendt. She was also a 3x SWMO Basketball Magazing Future 50, was a member of the KURM Dream Team and competed in the SWMO All Star Game. Jordon average 8.7 ppg, 5.6 rpg, & 2 apg while shooting 52% from the field her senior season. She was Team Captain for 3 seasons, a member of the Academic All-State Team, a 4x Superintendent’s Honor Roll selection and National Honors Society.

Brastad, a 6’0 Guard/Forward, was an All-Conference member and voted MVP of her team last season at Chanhassen HS in Minnesota playing for Coach Angie Kissock. She finished her career with 226 free throw made which was 2nd all time in school history. She also finished 3rd on the all time rebounds list with 375. Brastad also lettered in softball & was all conference HM and captain of the Volleyball team. She was a member of the Deans list and an academic all conference selection as well.

“Our freshman class provides us with some needed length & versatility. All 3 can put the ball on the floor and can stretch defense with their ability to shoot the 3. They have the ability to score in the post and each of them rebound the ball well.”
The Bearcats open the 2018-2019 season on November 9th in Wayne, Neb.

MWSU’s Shi Qing Ong wins playoff to advance to DII National Championships

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – For the second time in her Griffon career, Missouri Western women’s golfer Shi Qing Ong will play in the NCAA Division II National Championships.

The junior birdied a three-player, one-hole playoff for one of the final two individual qualifying spots for the national championships. Ong finished the tournament in a three-way tie for fifth place after turning in the second lowest score of Wednesday’s third and final round of the NCAA Division II Central Super Regional. Ong’s 2-under, 70, on Wednesday was only bested by second place finisher Peerada Piddon of Arkansas Tech’s 68. The three-way tie for fifth forced the playoff between Ong, Southwestern Oklahoma State’s Elin Wahlin and Central Missouri’s Olivia Sobaski. Ong birdied the playoff hole and Sobaski shot par to move on with her MIAA counterpart.

Missouri Western carded a 304 on Wednesday, eight strokes better than their previous lowest round of the tournament. The great day at Missouri Bluffs didn’t translate to movement in the standings as the Griffons finished in ninth place.

Chong Yong finished tied for 19th with a three-round total of 228 after a 3-over 75 in round three. Tiffanie Yabut turned in an 80 on Wednesday to finish with a 240 total.
