Chiefs promote Dave Toub to Assistant Head Coach

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that Head Coach Andy Reid has named Dave Toub the team’s Assistant Head Coach. Toub has served as the Chiefs Special Teams Coordinator the past five seasons (2013-17) and will continue those duties in his new role.

“Dave has had the opportunity to work with our team on both sides of the football, on the field and in the classroom,” Reid said. “His leadership qualities have entrusted me to promote him to Assistant Head Coach.”

Toub enters his sixth season with the Chiefs in 2018. Since Toub’s arrival in 2013, the Chiefs have 10 special teams kick returns for touchdowns (six punt, four kickoff), which is the most in the NFL over that span. The Chiefs took over the top mark for kick return average in NFL history in 2013 averaging 29.9 yards per return. Prior to arriving in Kansas City, Toub served as the Special Teams Coordinator for the Chicago Bears from 2004 to 2012. His units in Chicago finished in the top third of the league for eight straight seasons (2004-11). Before joining the Bears, Toub was the Assistant Special Teams Coach and Assistant Defensive Line Coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2001-03. During his stint with Philadelphia, Toub helped Eagles Special Teams Coordinator John Harbaugh earn 2001 NFL Special Teams Coach of the Year honors.

Toub spent 15 seasons coaching at the collegiate level, most recently at Missouri where he coached the defensive line (1998-00) after nine years (1989-97) as the school’s head strength coach. Toub began his coaching career in 1986 at his alma mater, Texas-El Paso, as a graduate assistant, and one year later was named the school’s head strength and conditioning coach.

KU’s Lagerald Vick to forego senior season to turn pro

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas guard Lagerald Vick will forego his senior season to pursue playing basketball professionally, Vick announced Friday.

A regular starter for Kansas in 2017-18, Vick averaged 12.1 points and was third on the KU team with a 4.8 rebound average. The Memphis, Tennessee, guard was an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection by the conference’s coaches and posted six games of 20 or more points during the season. In December, Vick had a three-game stretch of 20 or more points and he made 59 3-pointers for the year, including 13 in Kansas’ postseason run to the Final Four.

“Lagerald had a really good year for us,” Self said. “He started out so hot and finished strong. I believe the time is right for him to move on, explore his options as a professional and see what develops. We won a lot of games with Lagerald over the last three years and appreciate everything he’s done for Kansas and our basketball program. We are 100 percent supportive of his decision and wish him the very best in whatever path this takes him.”

As a Jayhawk, Vick was part of three Big 12 regular-season conference championships, two Big 12 Tournament titles, three NCAA Tournament Elite Eights and one Final Four. KU won 31 or more games all three seasons Vick was at KU and the Jayhawks went 44-4 (91.7 percent) in Allen Fieldhouse the last three seasons.

“I have nothing but great memories and times with the Jayhawk family – my coaches, my teammates and the fans,” Vick said. “I will never forget the accomplishments and how you all have supported me. It is now time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life. I am declaring for the 2018 NBA Draft and do not plan to hire an agent at this moment. Thanks for the love. ROCK CHALK!!!”

Vick played in 19 games as a freshman, averaging 2.1 points per contest and earning Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team honors for his work in the classroom. He started six of 36 games played as a sophomore where he averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He concludes his KU career averaging 8.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, scoring 775 points with 125 assists and 58 steals.

Griffon softball hits five HRs in sweep of Missouri Southern

ST. JOSEPH – Griffon Softball (19-22, 10-6) slugged its way to a sweep of Missouri Southern (19-23, 6-10), Thursday.

Missouri Western hit five home runs, three from Shelby Uhl, in the doubleheader along with three doubles. Uhl hit two of the team’s four home runs in game one and added another in game two. The Griffons got a 13-2, five-inning win in game one, before a 7-4 winner in game two.

NOTABLES

  • Uhl went 5-for-6 with five RBIs and five runs scored. She also stole three bases in four attempts.
  • Riley Wilson went 4-for-3 and started the home run parade in game one with a two-out, two-run blast to left. Wilson drove in six and scored three runs.

Bearcat baseball wins two games against No. 12 Central Missouri

The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team picked up a pair of wins over University of Central Missouri on Thursday at Bearcat Field in Maryville, Mo.

The Bearcats improve to 19-14 overall, 14-5 in conference, while the Mules fall to 25-9 overall and 16-7 in conference play.


Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 9, Central Missouri 8, 10 inn.)
– Northwest scored one in the second, three in the third, four in the fifth and one in the tenth inning. . The Mules got one in the first, two in the fourth, three in the sixth and two in the ninth inning.
– The Bearcats had nine runs on 12 hits with five errors. Central Missouri had eight runs on eight hits with one error.
– Hudson Bilodeau went 2-for-4 with one RBI, one walk, two runs scored and a double.
– Mondesi Gutierrez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and a double.
– Landon Figg finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored.
– Luke Hassman went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored, two RBIs and a homerun.

Gutierrez came in to score on a single up the middle by Figg to give the Bearcats the lead. Figg would come around to score on a fielder’s choice by Handzlik and give the Bearcats a 4-1 lead.

– Bilodeau started the bottom of the fifth with a walk and quickly moved to second on a single through the left side by Gutierrez. Figg hti a single to right field to score Bilodeau and put runners at first and second. Hassman would then reach on a fielder’s choice to score Gutierrez. Handzlik drew a one out walk and Barratt singled to left field to score Hassman. Handzlik would then advance on two wild pitches and come in to score to make the score 8-3.

– In the bottom of the tenth, Schingel hit a one out single to third base and advanced to third on a single by Hussey. Hussey stole second and Rycraft walked to load the bases. Bilodeau singled to left center to score Schingel and give the Bearcats a walk off win.


Game Two Key Statistics (Northwest 8, Central Missouri 3)
– The Bearcats scored three in the second, four in the third and one in the seventh inning. Central Missouri scored one in the fourth and two in the ninth inning.
– Northwest had eight runs on 12 hits with no errors. The Mules scored three run on eight hits with no errors.

Schingel and Hussey both drew one out walks and advanced to the next base on a fly out to left field. Bilodeua doubled down the left field line to score Schingel and Hussey to make the score 3-0.

– Figg led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run to left center field. Hassman kept the hitting going with single to right field and came in to score on a double to right center by Handzlik. Barratt brought Handzlik in with his second homerun of the game over the left field fence to give the Bearcats a 7-0 lead.

– Hassman began the seventh inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single to right field by Handzlik. Barratt drew a walk to load the bases. After two outs, Rycraft was hit by a pitch and scored Handzlik from third.

Mizzou’s Jontay Porter declares for NBA Draft; won’t hire an agent

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Missouri freshman forward Jontay Porter is following brother Michael Jr. into the NBA draft.

Porter said Thursday that he will enter the draft without hiring an agent, allowing him to pull out of the draft and retain eligibility.

“I have loved everything about my experience on and off the court as a member of the Mizzou family but have always dreamed of playing in the NBA,” Porter said.

The 6-foot-11 forward averaged 9.9 points and 6.8 rebounds.

Michael Porter Jr. entered the draft March 26, and had hired an agent. The 6-foot-10 forward played two minutes in the team’s opener, then had lower back surgery Nov. 21. He returned for the SEC Tournament, scoring 12 points in a loss to Georgia. He had 16 points in 28 minutes in a first-round loss to Florida State in the NCAA Tournament.

MWSU track & field wins three events at Northwest Missouri State

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Griffon Track & Field had a strong showing at the MIAA vs NSIC Showdown at Northwest Missouri on Thursday, picking up three event championships and three NCAA provisionals.

Hanna Williams won the 400-meter for the second-straight week, earning an NCAA regional with a 55.98. Phil Thompson won the triple jump and earned an NCAA provisional in his first outdoor competition of the season and Tanner Butterfield claimed his first-ever win in the javelin.

Northwest softball splits doubleheader with Pitt State

The Northwest Missouri State University softball team splits in a double header against Pittsburg State in Maryville, Mo.

The Bearcats are now 20-12 overall and 11-5 in conference, while Pittsburg State goes to 17-26 overall and 7-7 in conference play.

Game One Key Statistics (Northwest 5, Pitt State 2)
– Northwest scored four runs in second and one in the sixth inning. The Gorillas scored two in the sixth inning.
– The Bearcats had five runs on 12 hits and two errors. Pittsburg State scored two runs on 12 hits and no errors.

– In the bottom of the seventh inning, Rawie reached safely on an error and Brashear and Baderdeen loaded the bases with back-to-back singles to load the bases. After two outs, Weis singled up the middle to score Rawie and Brashear. Keeney singled to left field to score Baderdeen and conclude the scoring for the Bearcats.

Griffons’ rally comes up short at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – Griffon baseball (17-14) had its three-game winning streak snapped by Emporia State (18-13) with an 11-10 loss at the Trussler Sports Complex.

The Hornets hit hard early with 11 runs in the first three innings. Missouri Western’s Preston Bailey came in with one out in the third inning and cooled the ESU bats by retiring 11 straight batters. Bailey and Kellan Richards held ESU scoreless for the final 5 2/3 innings.

As the pitching quieted Emporia State, the offense answered back to chip away at the lead. A 2-run single by Brooks Day started a three-run fifth inning and allowed the Griffons to cut the deficit to 11-8. Home runs by Fahd Shakeel in the sixth and Casey Danley in the ninth had Missouri Western on the doorstep of a comeback before the Hornets escaped the threat.

  • Five different Griffons hit home runs in the game

No. 18 Mizzou baseball rolls past SIU-Edwardsville 12-1

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 18 Mizzou triumphed in a 12-1 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Wednesday night at Taylor Stadium. Senior OF Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.), senior DH Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.), senior IF Alex Samples (Bridgeport, Texas), senior OF Matt Berler (Hoover, Ala.), junior PH Zach Hanna (Shawnee, Kan.) and freshman C Chad McDaniel (Coral Springs, Fla.) all recorded two hits. Both Harris and junior 1B Isaiah Cullum (Bushnell, Fla.) homered.

Junior LHP Tyler LaPlante (Blue Springs, Mo.) pitched a scoreless 3.0 innings, improving his record to 4-1 while striking out a season-high of six batters. SIU-E RHP David Llorens tallied his third loss of the season. Mizzou improves to 22-7 of the season. SIU-E drops to 7-19.

TURNING POINT

Senior DH Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) jumpstarted the offense in the second inning with a leadoff single to centerfield. Bond then proceeded to steal second and third base. Junior 1B Isaiah Cullum(Bushnell, Fla.) walked and then stole second base. With runners in scoring position, sophomore SS Chris Cornelius (St. Louis, Mo.) grounded out to the right side, scoring Bond. Next, Junior IF Paul Gomez (Orange, Calif.) walked and senior LF Matt Berler (Hoover, Ala.) singled, loading the bases for senior RF Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.). Harris singled to right field, driving in both Cullum and Gomez, bringing the total of runs scored in the second inning to three.

Andy Peterson named interim AD at Northwest Missouri State

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University has named Andy Peterson as interim director of athletics to fulfill the responsibilities of Mel Tjeerdsma, who retires as the department’s director April 30.

“I’m excited for this opportunity,” Peterson said. “Bearcat athletics has been a special place to me for a long time, and to have this responsibility and opportunity to lead this unbelievably strong group is a dream come true. I am confident in our team to lead our department and do what’s best for our student-athletes, our coaches and our University.”

Peterson is in his fifth year as assistant athletics director for facilities. In that role, he oversees the day-to-day facility operations and scheduling for all Bearcat athletics venues. He also assists with home contest operations and management. He also is in his fourth year as the head women’s golf coach and was an assistant coach from 2011 to 2017 with the men’s basketball program, which he helped lead to five MIAA regular season championships, two conference tournament titles and the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2017.

He served on the University’s steering committee to develop its Campus Master Plan as well as the steering team guiding the design, construction and implementation of the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. His involvement also includes service with the Northwest Leadership Team, Northwest Staff Council and the Extended Leadership Team.

“Andy’s strategic outlook, keen intellect, business acumen and people management skills are combinations to help continue accentuating the strengths of our athletics department and focus on the student-athlete experience,” Northwest President Dr. John Jasinski said. “His experiences in operations and as a player and coach also provide an important context as we look to the future of continuing our strong focus on student-athlete success and in competing within the MIAA at the DII level.”

Peterson, a native of Trenton, Missouri, is working on his Doctor of Education in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He earned master’s degrees in agriculture in 2008 and in physical education in 2010 from Northwest as well as bachelor’s degrees in agriculture economics and horticulture from Northwest in 2007.

Peterson served on the Northwest Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Team as an undergraduate, was a graduate assistant in the Student Recreation Center, and worked part-time in the David “DC” & Susan Colt Athletic Training Room to assist with student insurance and billing for services.

Peterson played basketball for Northwest from 2003 to 2008 and helped the Bearcats claim the MIAA tournament title in 2008. That year, he was named All-MIAA Honorable Mention as well as Academic All-MIAA. The Bearcats also won the MIAA regular season championship during the 2006-07 season as he led the team in minutes played. Peterson finished his Northwest career with the third highest three-point percentage and is sixth all-time in steals. After his playing career, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Northwest, under former head coach Steve Tappmeyer in 2008-09 and present head coach Ben McCollum in 2009-10.

Peterson spent the 2010-11 season as the head men’s golf coach and assistant men’s basketball coach at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, before returning to Northwest.

He is married to Emily Churchman, an assistant coach with the Bearcat cross country and track and field teams and a former Bearcat track and field student-athlete. The couple has two children, Ellie and Asher, and reside in Maryville.
