Mizzou baseball gets road win at No. 24 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Mizzou Baseball earned its first road win over a ranked opponent since May 7, 2017, as it defeated No. 24 Miami, 9-0, Wednesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park. Junior RHP Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) dazzled in his first career start, pitching a career-high 5.0 innings while striking out a career-high eight. He scattered just four hits over the shutout appearance, earning his first win since March 15, 2017.

Mizzou scored five runs in the fourth inning, capitalizing on three hits, a walk and a big error by Miami starting pitcher Mike Mediavilla, allowing two runs to score. Mediavilla took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year. Mizzou improves to 3-1 on the year while Miami goes to 2-2.

TURNING POINT
In the bottom of the third inning, Miami seemed to catch a break as Mizzou CF Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) dove for a blooper in right center and let it get behind him for a triple with one out. Sharp pitched around the jam and Mizzou then exploded for five runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning, taking advantage of a huge throwing error by Miami starting pitcher Mike Mediavilla on a fielder’s choice at home plate.

Freshman INF Mark Vierling (St. Louis, Mo.) hit a bases-loaded shot back up the middle, caroming off Mediavilla’s foot. He regrouped and fired home, but high, allowing two Mizzou runs to score on the error. Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) and Chris Cornelius (St. Louis, Mo.) added RBI singles and senior 3B Alex Samples (Bridgeport, Texas) got an RBI on a sacrifice squeeze.

Sharp then threw up two more zeros to wrap up his career-best outing. T.J. Sikkema (DeWitt, Iowa) shut it down from there, throwing 3.0 innings, scattering just one hit and striking out five. Mizzou tacked on four more in the ninth inning and RHP Cameron Dulle (St. Louis, Mo.) shut the door from there.

Kansas women upset No. 23 Oklahoma State

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s basketball held off a comeback attempt by No. 23 Oklahoma State in the final quarter to outlast the Cowgirls, 66-59, on Wednesday night inside Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas (11-15, 3-13 Big 12) kept Oklahoma State (18-9, 9-8 Big 12) from completing a comeback, keeping the momentum in KU’s favor despite the Cowgirls best efforts to steal the advantage late in the game. The Jayhawks never relinquished the lead in the final 10 minutes and snapped their 12-game losing streak, while recording their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2014.

The Jayhawks’ win over No. 23 Oklahoma State marks their first Big 12 victory over a ranked opponent since the 2014 slate when KU snapped then-No. 7 Baylor’s 53-game conference win streak.

KU’s offense was led by four Jayhawks netting with double digits. Junior guard Kylee Kopatich scored a team-high 19 points, while connecting on 5-of-9 from behind the 3-point line. Junior guard Christalah Lyons notched her 24th double-figure scoring performance with 15 points, while junior forward Austin Richardson added 13 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt-sophomore center Tyler Johnson concluded KU’s scoring leaders with 11 points.

The Cowgirls were paced by Big 12 scoring leaders graduate guard Loryn Goodwin and senior center Kaylee Jensen. Goodwin netted a game-high 21 points, while Jensen notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Goodwin highlighted the stat line in the opening 10 minutes of play for the Cowgirls, knocking in half of Oklahoma State’s 22 points in the first quarter, including the first basket of the game.

Despite OSU starting the game on a hot streak, the Jayhawks never allowed the Cowgirls to take a double-digit lead in the first period, staying within six points of the lead until the 3-minute mark when a 3-pointer from junior guard Maria Castro put the Cowgirls ahead, 20-11.

Kansas narrowed the margin back to five with a pair of long range baskets from senior forward Chayla Cheadle and Richardson to outscore OSU 6-2 to end the period. Kansas headed into the second quarter Oklahoma State, 22-17.

After a 7-3 run to the second period, Oklahoma State owned a 29-20 advantage with just under five minutes remaining in the half. When it looked as if the Cowgirls were going to continue stretching their lead, the Jayhawks stopped OSU in its tracks and went on an 11-0 run to take a 31-29 lead with a minute and a half to go in the opening half.

KU’s 11 unanswered points were highlighted by six-straight points from Johnson to end the Kansas run. Goodwin tied the game up at 31 with a layup, but Johnson sank 1-of-2 from the free throw line to give Kansas a one-point lead at the half, 32-31.

The Jayhawks and Cowgirls battled back and forth to start the second half with neither team owning a lead larger than four for the first four minutes of the third quarter. Kansas took a 46-40 lead after going 4-of-5 from the floor and outscoring the Cowgirls 12-2. OSU’s junior guard Karli Wheeler knocked in back-to-back 3-point baskets to tie the game up at 46 with 1:50 remaining in the period.

After freshman guard Braxtin Miller connected on just one of her free throw attempts, the Jayhawks knocked in four-straight points to take a 50-47 lead before Miller responded by sinking a three to even the score at 50, heading into the final 10 minutes.

Kansas ran out to 59-52 lead to start the fourth quarter, after knocking in five-straight points to start the period. Oklahoma State never went away and netted the next seven points, including five from the charity stripe to tie the game back up, 59-59.

After nearly two minutes without a bucket from either side, Kopatich netted her fifth 3-point basket of the night to put Kansas ahead 62-59 with 42 seconds remaining. Richardson and Lyons sealed the KU victory with four-straight free throws to give the Jayhawks their third conference win of the season.

Missouri loses late lead again, falls in OT to Ole Miss 90-87

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Breein Tyree scored 25 points, including a game-tying basket in regulation, and Ole Miss defeated Missouri 90-87 in overtime Tuesday night.

The Rebels took the lead with 4:14 left in overtime and managed to hold on the rest of the way despite a series of fouls and turnovers.

With 15 seconds left and Ole Miss up one, the Rebels turned it over, but Terence Davis picked up a mammoth block on the other end with seven seconds left. Ole Miss closed it out with free throws.

The Rebels (12-16, 5-10 Southeastern conference) led for over 36 minutes, but had to shield a Missouri comeback attempt throughout the second half. The Tigers built a six-point lead with 2:38 remaining, but they allowed Ole Miss to climb back. Tyree drilled a floater with three seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Jontay Porter led Missouri (18-10, 8-7) with 17 points and contributed nine rebounds. Six different Tigers scored in double-digits, but Missouri turned the ball over 21 times, limiting its offensive flow for much of the game. Jeremiah Tilmon picked up a double-double, scoring 12 points and adding 12 rebounds, but shot just 2 for 6 from the free-throw line.

BIG PICTURE

Ole Miss: A very nice start to the Tony Madlock era. After dropping seven consecutive games and losing its coach, Ole Miss rebounded with an impressive offensive performance against a stellar defensive team, and showed enough fight to pick up its first road win in conference.

Missouri: The Tigers have now lost two straight after winning five in a row. While Missouri is still on track for an NCAA Tournament appearance, this definitely puts a dent in its resume. The Tigers also have turnover and inbound issues to fix.

Nebraska pulls away late to defeat Indiana 66-57

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — James Palmer scored 15 points Tuesday night as Nebraska beat Indiana 66-57, allowing the Huskers the resume their NCAA Tournament pursuit.

Nebraska (21-9, 12-5 Big Ten) bounced back from a Sunday loss at Illinois that stopped a six-game winning streak. Isaac Copeland added 13 points, and Isaiah Roby contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.

Indiana (16-13, 9-8) had a four-game winning streak snapped, hurting itself with 19 turnovers.

Indiana started a 10-2 run in the second half with back-to-back 3-point plays by Justin Smith and Juwan Morgan, taking a 41-37 lead with 13:50 remaining. Nebraska answered with 10 straight, including a 3-point play and two free throws by Evan Taylor, and led the rest of the way.

The Huskers, who tied a school record with their 12th conference win, finished off the Hoosiers when Palmer had two free throws and a dunk during an 8-0 run that made it 64-53 with 1:51 remaining.

Smith and Robert Johnson paced Indiana with 16 points apiece.

Indiana somehow emerged with a halftime lead despite a shaky first 20 minutes, going ahead 26-25 after Devonte Green and Johnson scored on hard drives in the final 90 seconds. Nebraska had a chance to regain the lead it held for much of the first half, but Roby missed a 3-point shot as time ran out.

Nebraska had taken a 25-22 lead on a 3-point basket by Thomas Allen with 1:52 remaining, but the Huskers made just 3 of 15 from behind the arc in the first half and did not attempt a free throw.

Indiana also hurt itself with nine turnovers but never trailed by more than five points in the half, facing its largest deficit at 9-4 after a Roby dunk.

BIG PICTURE

Indiana: The Hoosiers had built some late-season momentum by beating four consecutive Big Ten lower-division teams. They will try to rebound with a Friday night home game against Ohio State that concludes their regular-season schedule.

Nebraska: The NCAA tourney hopes remain fragile, but Nebraska picked itself up nicely after its costly loss at Illinois. The play of Palmer, a junior, continues to be an important part of one of the Huskers’ best seasons in years.

K-State women fall at home to West Virginia

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State looked to sweep the season series against West Virginia on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum, but the Mountaineers pocketed a 75-66 win. The Wildcats have now lost three straight.

K-State (13-14, 5-11 Big 12) had four players in double figures led by sophomore forward Peyton Williams with 18 points, six rebounds, a career-high tying five steals and a blocked shot. Williams has 13 games this season with 15 or more points and five or more rebounds.

Junior guard Kayla Goth finished with 14 points, five assists and two steals. For the season, Goth has dished out 178 assists and ranks fifth in school history. She is the third player in program history to hand out 175 or more assists in a single season.

Also in double figures were senior forward Kaylee Page with 16 points, while freshman guard Rachel Ranke chipped in with 11 points.

West Virginia (20-8, 8-8) saw all five starters in double figures led by Teana Muldrow with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. Katrina King added 16 points and nine rebounds.

After Kansas State dashed out to a quick 5-0 lead, West Virginia responded with a 12-0 run to build a 12-5 lead with 5:16 remaining in the opening quarter. The Mountaineers built their lead on the back of 3 three-pointers.

K-State pulled back to within one, 12-11, as K-State used a 6-0 run to close the gap. Williams finished off a post move with a layup. Cymone Goodrich then used a right lane line drive to card a layup, and Goth then completed a layup of her own with 3:51 to play to bring K-State within one.

Goth’s layup would be the final points of the quarter for K-State, as the Wildcats would go scoreless for the final 3:50 of the quarter and West Virginia would hold a 17-11 lead at the end of one.

The Wildcats pulled back within two points on a pair of occasions in the second quarter, but West Virginia was able to rebuild its lead to five, 25-20, with 3:54 left following a banked in jumper from Muldrow.

Muldrow’s jumper helped West Virginia end the first half on a 7-4 run and hold a 30-24 lead at the break.

Kansas State shot 35.5 percent (11-of-31) from the field, but were held to a 1-of-9 effort from beyond the arc including seven straight misses to end the half. The Mountaineers shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the floor.

West Virginia extended its lead to 10, 41-31, in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Wildcats 3-point drought extended to 10 straight misses before Page knocked down a 3-pointer at 7:02 of the third quarter.

Page would knock down another three during a 7-2 K-State run to force a West Virginia timeout and pull K-State to within five, 43-38, with 4:59 remaining in the third stanza.

West Virginia would end the third quarter on an 8-3 run to hold a 51-41 lead entering the fourth quarter. King scored six of the Mountaineers’ eight points during the run.

The Mountaineers built a 15-point advantage, 59-44, with 7:34 left in the fourth quarter. An 8-3 run by K-State provided life, as the Wildcats pulled to within nine, 61-52 following a Page 3-pointer with 6:15 remaining.

K-State was able to narrow the game to six, 65-59, with 3:33 remaining. Ranke connected on a layup following a K-State timeout, then added her second 3-pointer of the night following a K-State defensive stop. Williams buried her only two free throws of the night to trim the deficit to six.

The Mountaineers didn’t allow K-State to gain any more ground, outscoring K-State 10-7 in the final 3:14 of the fourth quarter to secure the win.

West Virginia finished the night shooting 54.2 percent (26-of-48) including 60.0 percent or better in the final three quarters. K-State checked in with a 39.0 percent effort (23-of-59). For the 13th time this season, K-State recorded 10 or more steals, ending the night with 11.

Kansas State will conclude its 2017-18 regular season home schedule on Saturday, as the Wildcats host Kansas in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown at 3 p.m. In a pregame ceremony at 2:45 p.m., of Saturday’s game, K-State will recognize members of the 1968-69 team, the first intercollegiate women’s basketball team in program history.
