MIAA hands out weekly football honors

Kansas City, Mo. – Emporia State’s Braxton Marstall has been named the MIAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week while Fort Hays State’s Nathan Shepherd earned Defensive Athlete of the Week. Pittsburg State’s Josh Hornback has been named the Special Teams Athlete of the Week.

MIAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week
Braxton Marstall, QB, Emporia State

Marstall threw for 435 yards and four touchdowns as #15 Emporia State defeated Neb.-Kearney 45-13. It took just two plays for Marstall to find Louis Dailey for a 61-yard touchdown only 40 seconds into the game. He completed 12 of his first 14 passes for 162 yards as the Hornets scored 21 first quarter points on Marstall touchdown passes of 61 yards, 34 yards, and 15 yards. He would add a three-yard scoring strike to Justin Brown on ESU’s first possession of the fourth quarter. His 435 yards were the second most in his career behind the 481 yards against UMD in the playoffs last year. He now has 38 career passing touchdowns in only 20 games to rank fifth all-time at Emporia State. He is currently leading the MIAA in total offense, passing yards and yards per pass. The 6-2 junior quarterback is a native of Emporia, Kan. where he competed at Emporia High School.

MIAA Football Defensive Athlete of the Week
Nathan Shepherd, DL, Fort Hays State

Shepherd had a strong performance at defensive tackle in a 35-6 win for FHSU over No. 13 ranked Central Missouri. He recorded seven tackles, including three for loss, along with a sack and a forced fumble. His biggest play of the night was a fumble he forced on a 10-yard sack, which stalled a UCM drive inside the red zone just before halftime. After UCM recovered the fumble, it turned the ball over on downs two plays later, leaving the score at 21-3 in favor of FHSU. Shepherd was part of a defense that recorded eight tackles for loss and limited the Mules to just 31 rushing yards. By halftime, FHSU held UCM to -2 yards rushing. Overall the Tigers allowed 304 yards of total offense to the No. 13 ranked Mules, forcing pass situations the majority of the second half. The 6-5 senior defensive lineman is a native of Ajax, Ontario, Canada and competed at Simon Fraiser University before coming to FHSU.

MIAA Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week
Josh Hornback, S, Pittsburg State

Hornback blocked a fourth quarter punt which was returned for a PSU touchdown against Central Oklahoma Saturday (Sept. 9). The touchdown proved to be the decisive points in the Gorillas 31-28 victory over the Bronchos. Hornback blocked UCO punter Jay Tedescos attempt at the UCO 36 yard line, and teammate Kaden Roy scooped up the ball at the UCO 25 and returned it for a score, which gave Pitt State a 31-21 lead with 9:35 to play. Hornback also made a team-leading eight tackles on defense for the Gorillas. The Wichita, Kan., native prepped at Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School before coming to Pitt State.

K-State’s Adams takes home Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Thanks to his two defensive touchdowns in Kansas State’s 55-7 victory over Charlotte on Saturday, Wildcat safety Kendall Adams picked up Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week accolades, the conference office announced Monday.

It was Adams’ first-career weekly conference honor and marked the second-straight week a Wildcat picked up player of the week accolades as D.J. Reed was the conference’s special teams player of the week after the season opener. Additionally, K-State now has 45 player of the week honors since 2011, the second most in the Big 12.

Adams accomplished a rare feat in the victory over the 49ers as he returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter before picking up a fumble and returning it 46 yards for a score in the second quarter. He became just the third Big 12 player to accomplish the feat, joining K-State’s Dyshod Carter against Missouri in 1999 and Texas Tech’s Paul McClendon against North Texas in 2001.

Adams also added five tackles to his line against Charlotte as he leads the team with 13 stops through two games of 2017.

K-State travels to Nashville, Tennessee, this Saturday to take on Vanderbilt at Vanderbilt Stadium. The game, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m., will be aired nationally on ESPNU.

Griffon soccer off to best start in program history after 4-2 win at Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Missouri Western soccer moved to 4-0 for the first time in program history with a 4-2 win at Sioux Falls Sunday afternoon.

The Griffons scored three second half goals and saw several more records fall in the contest. Cassidy Menke became the program’s all-time points leader and Sydney Cluck broke the MWSU career assists record in the win.

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY
For the first time this season, the Griffons trailed in a game after Sioux Falls got a goal in the ninth minute. Menke scored the initial equalizer and broke the points record with her sixth goal of the season in the 17th minute off an assist from Taylor Schwartzkopf. After Schwartzkopf gave MWSU a 2-1 lead early in the second half, Sioux Falls tied the game at two. From then on it was all Griffons as Madeline Cowell put the Griffs up for good scoring off her corner kick in the 78th minute. Menke padded the lead with her seventh goal of the season in the 83rd minute.

SECOND HALF TEAM
Along with the three second half goals, the Griffon defense went into lock-down mode in the final 45 minutes. Missouri Western allowed just three Sioux Falls shots in the second half while taking 12. The Griffons had seven second half corner kicks to none for Sioux Falls. MWSU has outscored opponents 10-2 in the second half this season, outshooting the opposition 49-16 after the break.

GOALS RECORDS ON ALERT
Four goals Sunday gave MWSU 18 already this season. Only two Griffon teams have ever scored more in an entire season. The high-water mark is 26 set in 2009 with last year’s team scoring 22. Not all results were reported at the time of this release, but the Griffons’ 4.5 goals per game average and 18 total led the MIAA following Sunday’s win. Menke is already just two shy of her own goals in a season record set in 2016.

UP NEXT
Missouri Western takes momentum into the first round against its rival to the north. The Griffons host Northwest Missouri (1-1) Friday, Sept. 15 in a non-conference tilt. Then No. 25 Lindenwood (2-1) comes to St. Joseph on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Mizzou fires defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross just two games into 2017

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — DeMontie Cross was fired as Missouri’s defensive coordinator after a year and two games in the position.

The school announced the move Sunday, a day after the Tigers (1-1) lost 31-13 to South Carolina and a week after they gave up 43 points to Football Championship Subdivision opponent Missouri State.

Cross’ firing is effective immediately, and no immediate replacement was named in the school’s announcement. It comes ahead of the Tigers matchup with Purdue on Saturday.

A former Missouri safety from 1994-96, Cross was stripped of his play-calling duties seven games into the 2016-17 season. Even after Odom took over play-calling, the Tigers finished the season ranked worst in the Southeastern Conference in yards allowed per game.

“I am very appreciative of all that DeMontie has done for Mizzou, and am sorry that this did not work out,” Missouri coach Barry Odom said. “However, after careful evaluation, I believe it is important to make this change now.”

Through two games in this season, Odom has continued to call plays with co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Ryan Walters, outside linebackers coach Brian Odom and defensive line coach Brick Haley looking on.

Cross continued to coach inside linebackers and focus on recruiting efforts after Odom took over play-calling.

He was hired to a three-year contract at Missouri worth $600,000 per year after a three-year stint at TCU, where he coached linebackers and was a co-defensive coordinator.

Kansas City splits series with 11-3 win over Minnesota

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jason Vargas had his best outing in a month and it came when the Kansas City Royals needed it the most.

Vargas snapped a personal four-game losing streak with his career high 15th victory, Brandon Moss homered and drove in four runs and the Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 11-3 on Sunday.

The Royals earned a split of the four-game series after losing the first two games. Kansas City is back at .500 (71-71) and moved 2 1/2 games behind Minnesota for the second AL wild-card berth.

“We’ve got a lot riding on all of them,” Vargas said. “We can’t afford to lose too many.”

Vargas (15-10) gave up a run and four hits over five innings. He was 2-7 with an 8.13 ERA in his previous 11 starts. Vargas’ previous season-high was 14 victories in 2012 with the Seattle Mariners.

“Personal goals or personal achievements don’t really mean a whole lot,” Vargas said. “If I had got pulled in that fourth inning, we’d still would have got a `W’ and it would have been just as a big game for us. At this point, personal goals don’t matter.”

Moss had an RBI double in a six-run second inning and a three-run homer in the seventh.

Eric Hosmer doubled twice among his four hits for his fourth straight multi-hit game. He has eight straight hits and a walk in past nine plate-appearances to raise his average to .328.

“It’s a nice streak,” Hosmer said. “We’re getting some wins. We did a good job of evening out this series. We realize there’s not a lot of time left, so there’s definitely a sense of urgency in here.”

Hosmer went 11 for 14 with two walks in the four-game series.

“We didn’t get Hosmer out, it felt like, the whole series,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

Byron Buxton tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the second for the only run against Vargas, who worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth when Brian Dozier grounded into an inning-ending double play.

“I was trying to get him to ground into a double play,” Vargas said. “I don’t know what else to say.”

The Royals sent 11 men to the plate in a six-run second inning off Bartolo Colon (6-12). Hosmer led off with a single, his first of two hits in the inning. He scored a run and drove in a run in the second.

Alcides Escobar contributed a two-run single, while Moss, Alex Gordon and Whit Merrifield had run-producing doubles.

Colon retired only five of the 11 batters he faced for his shortest outing of the year.

“There’s good days and then there’s bad days,” Colon said through an interpreter. “Today I felt amazing going out there, better than previous starts, but it was not my day today.”

Kenny Vargas hit a two-run homer in the Twins’ ninth.

ESCOBAR HOT

Escobar was hitting .179 on June 17, but is 81 for 278 (.299) in his past 75 games, to raise his average to .248. He went 6 for 13 in the series against the Twins.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: LHP Adalberto Meja (arm strain) will likely be activated and inserted into the rotation at the end of the week after tossing five one-hit scoreless innings Saturday for Double-A Chattanooga in a rehab start.

Royals: RHP Joakim Soria (left oblique strain) returned to Arizona to be with his daughter who had appendicitis surgery. Also, his wife’s due date is Thursday for the couple’s third child. The club had planned to activate Soria on Monday, but that will be delayed several days.

UP NEXT

Twins: After a day off, RHP Kyle Gibson (9-10, 5.19 ERA) will start Tuesday against the Padres.

Royals: RHP Jason Hammel (8-10, 4.73) will start the series opener against the White Sox. Chicago will go with RHP Reynaldo Lopez (0-3, 4.84).

Molina, Wacha lead Cardinals to shutout of Pirates

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina’s teammates could tell their All-Star catcher was not happy.

After taking a fastball from Ivan Nova high and tight, Molina hit the next pitch for a three-run homer to help the St. Louis Cardinal beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-0 on Sunday.

“Everyone knows don’t mess with Yadi,” St. Louis infielder Kolten Wong said. “After that, you could tell he’s (ticked) off. He took it out on the baseball.”

St. Louis, which has won three in a row and seven of eight, moved two games behind Chicago in the NL Central. The Cardinals are 2 1/2 behind Colorado for the second NL wild card.

Michael Wacha tossed eight scoreless innings and Randal Grichuk added a solo homer for St. Louis, which improved to 8-2 in September and moved to a season-high seven games over .500.

Molina tied a career-high with five RBI. He also drove in five runs on Sept. 17, 2010 against San Diego.

Pittsburgh dropped its fifth in a row and slumped to 10 games under .500 for the first time since the end of the 2011 season.

Molina, who left without speaking to reporters, pushed the lead to 4-0 with his drive in the fourth inning. After dodging the errant pitch, he calmly stepped back into the batter’s box and ripped his second round-tripper in as many games.

“I feel like he took offense to that,” Wacha said of the inside pitch. “It was great to see.”

Nova said he meant no harm.

“I’m not that type of pitcher,” Nova said. “Just pitching (my) game.”

Molina had an RBI single in the first and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

“Big day, great at-bats all day,” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. “Talk about big hits, he did a great job.”

Wacha (12-7) allowed five hits while striking out seven and did not walk a batter in getting his third win in three starts.

“It’s that time of the year where you’re trying to make the playoffs,” Wacha said. “And every game matters. When it gets down to it, you compete your tail off and try and get the win.”

The Cardinals’ two-game deficit in the NL Central is the closest they’ve been since Aug. 18 when they were 1 1/2 back.

Nova gave up five runs and five in hits five innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

The Pirates were shut out for the eighth time this season.

TRAINER’S ROOM:

Pirates: INF Josh Harrison has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list with a fractured left hand.

Cardinals: OF Dexter Fowler was held out of the lineup Sunday with a left knee contusion after crashing into the wall on Saturday. St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said there was, “significant swelling,” and was uncertain on his return. … OF Tommy Pham is still having vision problems and was held out of the lineup Sunday. He suffers from keratoconus and the problem is heightened during day games.

UP NEXT

Pirates: LHP Steven Brault (0-0, 5.79) will open a three-game series at Milwaukee on Monday. He will be opposed by RHP Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 1.52). Brault is making his second start. He was named the Most Valuable Pitcher in the International League after posting a 10-5 mark with a 1.94 ERA for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cardinals: RHP Lance Lynn (10-7, 2.94) will start on Tuesday in the first of a three-game series against Cincinnati. He will face RHP Robert Stephenson (4-4, 5.15). Lynn has allowed one earned run in his last 14 innings.

Missouri lets early lead slip away in 31-13 loss to South Carolina

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Deebo Samuel ran for two touchdowns to help South Carolina cruise to a 31-13 victory over Missouri on Saturday night in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.

Missouri (1-1, 0-1) led 10-0 early in the second quarter when tight end Jason Reese slipped past linebacker T.J. Brunson, hauled in a Drew Lock pass and outran his pursuers. South Carolina (2-0, 1-0) trailed for only 30 seconds. Samuel returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown — his second TD return in two weeks. After the Gamecocks’ Jamyest Williams intercepted Lock, Samuel struck again, scoring on a 25-yard jet sweep. Samuel finished with five catches for 45 yards.

Jake Bentley was 18 of 28 for 187 yards passing and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Hurst to stretch South Carolina’s lead to 21-10 midway through the third quarter. Hurst added a 2-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Lock had 245 yards passing and a touchdown, but was intercepted twice.

THE TAKEAWAY

South Carolina: For the second straight week, the Gamecocks won a game in which they were outgained from scrimmage. Missouri outgained South Carolina 423-359, but the Gamecocks were plus-three in turnovers and allowed Samuel’s big kickoff return. South Carolina beat North Carolina State 35-28 last week despite being outgained 504-246.

Missouri: Missouri running back Damarea Crockett was having a big night until he jogged off the field with an injury in the third quarter and did not return. The nature of the injury wasn’t immediately revealed. He finished with 18 carries for 97 yards.

UP NEXT

South Carolina: The Gamecocks will face another SEC East opponent when Kentucky visits next Saturday.

Missouri: The Tigers face Purdue at home on Saturday.

Hosmer fuels rally in 8th, Royals beat Twins 5-2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eric Hosmer drove in the go-ahead run with his third hit in a three-run eighth inning, helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Saturday night.

Lorenzo Cain led off the eighth with a single against Ryan Pressly (2-3), and Melky Cabrera walked. Hosmer’s single off Buddy Boshers scored pinch-runner Terrance Gore.

Salvador Perez had an RBI double and Alcides Escobar a sacrifice fly to cap the inning.

Mike Minor (6-6) got the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Brandon Maurer earned his second save in three chances since the Royals acquired him in a July 24 trade with San Diego.

Alex Gordon homered with two out in the Royals’ seventh to tie it at 2. It was Gordon’s sixth home run and his first since July 3, ending a 169 at-bat home run drought.

Cain tripled in the first and scored on Cabrera’s ground out for the first Royals’ run. Cain finished with three hits.

Royals rookie right-hander Jake Junis, who is 5-0 since a June 29 loss, allowed two runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

Eddie Rosario took Junis deep in the third, and Byron Buxton homered in the sixth.

Minnesota starter Jose Berrios limited the Royals to two runs and eight hits over seven innings.

TWINS GO WITH SAME LINEUP

Manager Paul Molitor stayed with the same Twins lineup that beat the Royals the first two games of the series. “Three days in a row. I don’t know if we’ve done that this year, but it’s kind of nice to come in here and not overthink it,” Molitor said. “I didn’t see a lot of reason just to change. It’s clicking fairly well for the most part. I think the guys are comfortable where they’re at.”

With the Royals starting a left-hander Sunday and a day game after a night game, Molitor will likely have some lineup modifications for the series finale.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins: 3B Miguel Sano (left shin stress) did some things on the field Saturday, and Molitor said he “had a good day.” Sano’s return will be made tricky by the fact that the minor league season is nearly over, meaning he won’t be able to go on a rehab assignment. … LHP Adalberto Mejia (arm strain) made a rehab start Saturday for Double-A Chattanooga and pitched five scoreless innings and allowed one run against Montgomery. He struck out five and walked none, throwing 50 strikes in 73 pitches.

Royals: LHP Danny Duffy (left elbow impingement) will throw a simulated game Monday. If all goes well, Duffy could return to the rotation next weekend. … RHP Ian Kennedy (rotator cuff fatigue) will probably not make his next start. … RHP Joakim Soria (left oblique strain) felt fine Saturday after a bullpen session Friday. Manager Ned Yost said Soria would likely be activated Monday.

UP NEXT

Twins: RHP Bartolo Colon is 15-10 with a 4.78 ERA in 29 career starts against the Royals.

Royals: LHP Jason Vargas is 2-7 with an 8.13 ERA in his past 11 starts.
