Michael Porter, Jr. officially signs with Mizzou

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Men’s Basketball has signed the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit, Michael Porter, Jr. (Columbia, Mo.) to its 2017 recruiting class, head coach Cuonzo Martin announced on Wednesday. Porter returns home to Columbia, Missouri, as the Tigers’ first McDonald’s All-America signee since 2000. The 6-10, 215-pound forward played his senior season for Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Washington, in 2016-17, averaging an outstanding 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per game.

The signing of Porter brings the Show-Me State back one of its own to cheer for as the talented future Tiger starred for Father Tolton Catholic in Columbia from 2013-16, leading the Trailblazers to the 2016 Missouri Class 3 State Championship inside Mizzou Arena.

“It goes without saying, but Michael is a special player and a special person,” Martin said. “Michael comes to the Mizzou Family from a great family of his own, and our basketball program is thrilled to have a student-athlete with his character, drive and passion. Lisa and Michael Porter, Sr., raised Michael well. He is continually motivated to give and is always striving to be a great teammate.

“Most of all, welcome home to Michael. Mizzou is a special place and Columbia is a community that already knows him well. I’m looking forward to Michael representing Mizzou well, on and off the court and in the classroom, and I’m sure he looks forward to it, as well.”

As a junior in 2015-16, Porter averaged 28.5 points and 11.8 rebounds per game and helped Tolton to a 26-3 record and Columbia’s first high school state basketball championship in 54 years.

As a senior in 2016-17, the Porter-powered Nathan Hale squad posted a perfect 29-0 record en route to the Washington Class 3A State Championship. The state title was the first-ever for the Seattle school.

Honored as the Most Valuable Player of the 2017 McDonald’s All-American Game in Chicago on March 29, Porter completed a significant trifecta of awards by also garnering the Naismith and Gatorade Boys national player of the year awards. He is just the fifth basketball player ever to claim all three honors and first since 2004, joining the prolific listing of Dwight Howard (2004), LeBron James (2003), Chris Webber (1991) and Alonzo Mourning (1988).

Porter is Mizzou’s sixth all-time McDonald’s All-American signee; the first since Travon Bryant (2000). Porter’s name resides on a list that also includes: Albert White (1995), Anthony Peeler (1988), Derrick Chievous (1984) and Steve Stipanovich (1979).

Porter is considered the nation’s top recruit by ESPN.com and Rivals, as well as a five-star prospect by the aforementioned outlets and Scout.com and 247Sports. Additionally selected as USA Today’s All-USA Boys Basketball Player of the Year, Porter was named to All-America teams by USA Today, Associated Press, the Naismith Trophy and MaxPreps.

Beyond mere accolades, Porter has showcased his talent on national and international levels, playing for the Team USA U-18 squad on multiple occasions while earning a spot in the Jordan Brand Classic (April 14).

The son of Lisa and Michael Porter, Sr., Michael Porter, Jr. has seven siblings: Bri, Cierra, Jontay, Coban, Jevan, Izaak and Jayda. Older sisters Bri and Cierra play for Mizzou Women’s Basketball, coached by their aunt, Robin Pingeton. His father, Michael Porter, Sr., serves as an assistant coach on Martin’s staff. His mother, Lisa, played college basketball at Iowa, while his father played collegiately at New Orleans.

Porter’s signing of a financial aid agreement with the University of Missouri includes him in a growing recruiting class with incoming guard C.J. Roberts (North Richland Hills, Texas).

Leake, Piscotty lead St. Louis past Nationals

riggertCardinalsWASHINGTON (AP) — Going up against the 2016 NL Cy Young winner and facing the prospect of stumbling to their worst start in 20 years, the St. Louis Cardinals played their best game of the young season.

Mike Leake outpitched Max Scherzer, Stephen Piscotty homered and had five RBI, and the Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 6-1 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.

After yielding 22 runs in the first two games of the series, St. Louis dodged its first 2-7 start since 1997.

“Leake did a tremendous job on the mound and we played good defense,” Piscotty said. “It was a good win, and we needed it.”

Leake (1-1) gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked none over seven shutout innings. The right-hander allowed hits to the first two batters, then picked off a runner before getting 19 straight outs. The streak ended when Daniel Murphy singled with two outs in the seventh.

By that time, St. Louis had taken a 3-0 lead against Scherzer, who yielded only one earned run. He did, however, throw three wild pitches — two in the third inning — after tossing only two all last year while going 20-7.

Scherzer (1-1) allowed three runs, four hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out 10, the 50th time in his career he reached double figures in strikeouts.

“At the end of the day, even when you get punched in the face, you still do some things well,” Scherzer said. “I was able to get a lot of swings and misses and was able to get my cut slider into lefties really well.

“Other times, I pitched ineffectively. This doesn’t feel great, but I’m in a situation where I’m ready to go forward with my next start and pitch well.”

With Leake leading the way, the Cardinals rebounded from a three-game skid in which they were outscored 30-9.

“It’s ideal,” Leake said of his performance. “It’s what you ask for from a starting pitcher after you’ve been beat down for a couple games.”

Leake permitted only two runners past first base and reduced his ERA to 0.60.

“What a great day — seven shutout innings against this team,” manager Mike Matheny said.

After Leake was pulled, Adam Eaton hit an RBI single in the eighth inning and Washington put runners at the corners with two outs before Brett Cecil got Bryce Harper to line out to third.

Piscotty’s drive in the ninth ended any remaining suspense. He also had run-scoring singles in the first and fifth innings in tying his career high for RBI.

St. Louis used a walk and a double by Piscotty to go up 1-0 in the first inning.

In the bottom half, Eaton doubled and took third on a single by Anthony Rendon. Not long after that, a replay requested by the Cardinals revealed that Leake picked off Rendon.

“That’s a game changer,” Matheny said.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker agreed, noting, “We had him on the ropes and then the pickoff.”

Leake subsequently struck out Harper and retired Murphy on a comebacker.

St. Louis took advantage of an error by shortstop Wilmer Difo to score two unearned runs in the fifth.

PERALTA STRUGGLES

Matheny is exercising patience while waiting for three-time All-Star Jhonny Peralta to break a hitting slump.

Peralta is 3 for 20 with eight strikeouts and no walks.

“He’s run against good guys making good pitches,” said Matheny, who sat Peralta on Wednesday. “We have to let him run the course.”

TRAINER’S ROOM
Cardinals: 1B Matt Carpenter returned to the starting lineup after back tightness limited him to a pinch-hitting role on Tuesday.

Nationals: Placed INF Stephen Drew on the 10-day DL with a strained right hamstring. The injury occurred Tuesday night. He’s been replaced on the roster by INF Grant Green.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: The team intended to travel by train to New York on Wednesday night, take Thursday off and start a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Friday night.

Nationals: Following an off day Thursday, Washington opens a three-game series against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.

Missouri baseball wins second straight against Arkansas-Pine Bluff

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball pushed its win streak to four games with a 15-6 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday afternoon (April 12) at Taylor Stadium. Mizzou posted a pair of seven-run innings (the first and fourth) and pounded out four extra-base hits and two homers to score its second-most runs of the year. Mizzou moves to 25-9 on the year with the win.

Mizzou jumped all over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first, tallying four hits and taking advantage of a pair of errors to plate seven runs, staking starting pitcher Ryan Lee (Grandview, Mo.) to an early lead. Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas), Chris Cornelius (St. Louis, Mo.) and Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) tallied two-out RBI singles in the frame.

UAPB took advantage of five walks, a wild pitch and an error in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 7-3. LF Jordan Knox then hit a two-out, three-run homer to cut the lead to 7-6, getting the Golden Lions back into the game. But just as quick as UAPB got back into the game, Mizzou broke it open again with one run in the third and seven more in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by homers from Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.) and Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.).

That was all the offense that Mizzou needed as sophomore RHP Cameron Dulle (St. Louis, Mo.) settled things down for the Mizzou pitchers from there as he tossed a career-long 3.1 innings and allowed just three hits with two strikeouts while holding UAPB off the board. He earned his first career win.

The Tigers return home this weekend for a big series with SEC East-leading Kentucky, beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.

KU’s Mykhailiuk to enter NBA Draft without an agent

riggertKULAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk is entering his name into the NBA Draft without hiring an agent, KU head coach Bill Self said Wednesday.

Mykhailiuk will have until May 24 to decide whether to remain in the draft or return to KU for his senior season.

“We support Svi 100 percent with his decision to test,” Self said. “I know he’ll prepare very hard for it and after the combine, he’ll get accurate feedback and make an informed decision which is what the rules are designed to do. In no way, shape or form is this a surprise. We expected this.”

A 6-foot-8 guard from Cherkasy, Ukraine, Mykhailiuk started 25 games for KU last season and averaged 9.8 points per contest. The two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection ranked eighth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 38.9 percent and eighth in 3-point field goals made at 1.9. Mykhailiuk made three or more from beyond the arc in 11 games with four or more treys in four outings. He pulled down 3.0 rebounds per game and also averaged 1.9 steals per contest in 2016-17.

“Kansas has prepared me for this opportunity and after talking with Coach Self, my family and teammates, it is my plan to work hard and take my game to the next level,” Mykhailiuk said. “I have matured a lot in my three seasons at KU as a player and a person, playing for great coaches and with great teammates, many who are in the NBA. I have got a lot stronger under coach (Andrea) Hudy and have improved my overall game every year. It’s everyone’s dream to play in the NBA and not going with an agent allows me to see where I stand after the combine and workouts.”

For his career, Mykhailiuk has played in 97 games for Kansas with 31 starts and a 6.3 scoring average. His 122 3-pointers made rank 20th on the KU career chart, including a career-high six treys against Chaminade (11/23/15) during his freshman season at the Maui Invitational. Mykhailiuk scored career-high 23 points against Austin Peay in the 2016 NCAA Tournament opening round.

Missouri baseball tops Arkansas-Pine Bluff behind Toelken’s gem

riggertMissouriCOLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball topped Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 13-1, Tuesday night at Taylor Stadium to extend its winning streak to three games. Junior RHP Andy Toelken (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) tossed a gem, throwing his first career complete game and the first nine-inning complete game this season. Toelken dominated on the bump as he flirted with a no-hitter through 5.2 innings and gave up just a pair of hits and a single run while striking out a career-high seven.

Mizzou was led offensively by freshman OF Kameron Misner (Poplar Bluff, Mo.), who knocked in a career-high four runs and reached base in each of his four at bats as he tallied a triple, a pair of doubles, and a walk

With the victory, Mizzou improves to 24-9 on the season. In the win, Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) and Kirby McGuire (Round Rock, Texas) also had multiple hits. Mizzou pounded out 14 hits, its most since slugging 15 against Western Carolina on March 8, while its 13 runs were the most since hanging a season-high 27 on Eastern Michigan on Feb. 18.

Mizzou gained an advantage early, deploying an offensive barrage in the bottom of the second as they tallied three consecutive doubles. Robbie Glendenning (Scarborough, Australia) doubled into right and was knocked in for the game’s first run on a Misner two-bagger. Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) then laced another double down the left field line to give Mizzou a 2-0 advantage. Two batters later, Brumfield smashed a RBI single up the middle to extend the lead.

Mizzou shortstop Chris Cornelius (St. Louis, Mo.) made a dazzling backhand play in the top of the fourth on a hard-hit groundball in the hole on the left side. The highlight was completed with a pick at first base by Brian Sharp (Liberty, Mo.).

In the bottom of the fourth, Mizzou stretched its lead to four as Brumfield knocked in Misner on a two-out single into right. The base knock made Brumfield 3-for-3 on the evening, which moved him into the team lead for three-hit games. It was his third three-hit performance this season and his team-leading 12th multi-hit game.

Mizzou broke the game open in the fifth as they put a five spot on the Lions. The frame was highlighted by a Misner three-run triple over the head of the UAPB centerfielder. Misner tallied four RBI in the game, his season-high. After five Mizzou led 9-0.

In the top of the sixth, Toelken lost his no-hit bid on the 20th batter he faced. UAPB’s Aderly Perez doubled down the left field line and later scored on a base hit. Nonetheless, Toelken continued to dominate as he pitched the full nine innings, the longest start of his career.

Mizzou added to its’ lead as they notched a run in the seventh and three in the eighth on a three-run bomb by junior right fielder Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.). Harris now has a team-leading seven home runs and also sits at seventh place in the SEC. That gave Mizzou its 13 runs as it claimed the 13-1 decision.

Mizzou and UAPB will wrap up their two-game series Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Cardinals drop second straight at Washington

riggertCardinalsWASHINGTON (AP) — Daniel Murphy homered, doubled twice and tied career highs with five RBI and four hits and the Washington Nationals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-3 on Tuesday night.

Matt Wieters and Jayson Werth also hit solo shots to help Washington earn a second home series victory.

Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez (1-0) allowed two runs — one earned — over seven innings. He allowed six hits before retiring his last 11 batters.

Lance Lynn (0-1) allowed six runs — four earned — and five hits and four walks over five innings.

Randal Grichuk and Aldemys Diaz homered for St. Louis.

Bryce Harper walked three times against Lynn to reach base in nine straight plate appearances going back to Monday, tying a career high set last season against the Chicago Cubs and manager Joe Maddon. He also doubled in the eighth.

Lynn hadn’t allowed a hit when he walked Gonzalez on four pitches with one out in the third. After a fielding error and a walk to Harper loaded the bases, Murphy ripped a two out-single through the infield to give Washington a 2-1 lead.

Grichuk’s homer tied it in the top of the fourth before Werth and Wieters went deep in the bottom of the inning. Then in the fifth, Lynn walked Harper for the third time before Murphy blasted a 1-2 changeup into the second deck in right to make it 6-2.

Murphy drove in Harper for a second time on an RBI double in the eighth.

BRYCE ON BASE

After going 4 for 4 with two walks in a 14-6 win Monday, Harper’s three walks Tuesday helped him match a stretch from May 7 and 8 of last year. The Cubs and Maddon intentionally walked Harper four times in that stretch, three coming in Harper’s six-walk game on May 8. Harper left the series at Wrigley Field hitting .265. By June 4, the 2015 NL MVP’s average had dipped to .238.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cardinals: Left-handed hitting 1B Matt Carpenter was out of the starting lineup with back tightness against the lefty Gonzalez, but pinch hit in the ninth inning. “He was good to play today, but with the lefty matchup given the opportunity for Martinez to get in there and have a start,” manager Mike Matheny said.

Nationals: 3B Anthony Rendon began the game on the bench after manager Dusty Baker said he wasn’t sure “if his leg is right 100 percent.” Rendon missed Opening Day with a bruised calf. He came on in the sixth inning to replace Stephen Drew at third.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: RHP Mike Leake looks to build upon an eight-inning outing to open the season.

Nationals: Max Scherzer makes his first home start since the right-hander won the 2016 NL Cy Young Award.
