Chiefs sign offensive lineman Hutch Eckerson

ChiefsThe Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday that the club has signed free agent offensive lineman Hutch Eckerson.

Eckerson (6-6, 310) originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2011. He was released by San Diego prior to the start of the regular season, then signed by New Orleans on May 14, 2012.

Eckerson was released by the Saints during preseason play and then joined the Bills for his most recent NFL stint on Feb. 14, 2013. The Lumberton, N.C., native played collegiately at South Carolina where he saw action in 23 games at both tackle positions.

He was a college teammate of current Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop. Eckerson was an all-conference offensive lineman at Lumberton High School.

Chiefs sign CB Semaj Moody; release Conroy Black

riggertChiefsThe Kansas City Chiefs have signed cornerback Semaj Moody and waived cornerback Conroy Black, the team announced Tuesday.

Moody (5-10, 195) joins the Chiefs after playing one season in the AFL for the Chicago Rush (2012). He played in all 18 games for the club, leading the team in tackles with 86.5. Moody added three interceptions, 10 passes defensed and two fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown. Prior to his stint in Chicago, he played collegiately at South Carolina State as both a receiver and defensive back. Moody prepped at Denmark-Olar High School in Denmark, S.C.

Black originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders on May 11, 2012. He spent the 2012 preseason with Oakland before being released, then was added to the Detroit Lions practice squad roster on Sept. 18. Black was released by the Lions on May 16, 2013.

The Pembroke Pines, Florida native played defensive back at Utah for two years (2010-11). Prior to playing at Utah, he attended Fullerton College. Black prepped at Everglades High School in Miramar, Fla. He joined the Chiefs as a free agent on July 26, 2013.

Curley Culp Enters Pro Football Hall Of Fame

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Curley Culp has become the most recent member of the dynamic Kansas City defense that won a Super Bowl to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Culp was one of the game’s most dominant defensive tackles for much of his 14 pro seasons. In the 1969 season, he joined future hall members Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, Emmitt Thomas and Bobby Bell in leading a unit that carried the Chiefs to a Super Bowl win over Minnesota.

Culp also played for Houston and Detroit, retiring in 1981. Culp waited more than three decades to be enshrined Saturday as a senior nominee. He says his election “gives me joy and inspiration that will last the rest of my life.”

A five-time Pro Bowler, Culp was one of the original players at his position to be a threat as a pass rusher.

He was presented by his son, Chad.

Kansas City signs OT Rokevious Watkins; waive Mike Tepper

Rams Colts FootballThe Kansas City Chiefs announced on Saturday that the club has signed offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins. Additionally, the team has waived tackle Mike Tepper.

Watkins (6-3, 338) played in one contest his rookie season in 2012 with the St. Louis Rams. He originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round selection (150th overall) of the Rams in the 2012 NFL Draft. Watkins played collegiately at South Carolina where he was an All-SEC selection. The Fairburn, Ga., native prepped at Creekside High School, the same high school as Chiefs Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry.

Tepper (6-6, 354) has played in six games (four starts) in one NFL season with the Indianapolis Colts (2011). In 2011 and 2012, Tepper split time between the Colts practice squad and active roster before being released on Aug. 31, 2012. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2010. He was released by Dallas before the start of the 2010 season. Tepper played collegiately at California and prepped at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, Calif.

Chiefs sign CB Kamaal McIlwain and OT Mike Tepper

riggertChiefsThe Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday that the club has signed cornerback Kamaal McIlwain and offensive tackle Mike Tepper.

McIlwain (5-10, 175) originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2011. After being released by the Falcons before the start of the regular season, he spent his rookie year on the New Orleans Saints practice squad. McIlwain was released by the Saints on Aug. 27, 2012 and then signed on with the Carolina Panthers where he served on their practice squad roster for the season. McIlwain was an All-South Atlantic Conference player at Newberry College. He prepped at Indian Land High School in Fort Mill, S.C.
