Chiefs announce signings of Brady Quinn & Eric Winston

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday that the club has signed free agent quarterback Brady Quinn and tackle Eric Winston.

Quinn (6-3, 235) played in 14 games (12 starts) with the Cleveland Browns from 2007-09. Over his three seasons in Cleveland, Quinn completed 184 passes on 353 attempts (52.1%) for 1,902 yards, 10 TDs and nine INTs. He rushed 25 times for 119 yards (4.8 avg.) with a TD. Following the 2009 season, Quinn was traded to the Denver Broncos in a deal that sent newly-acquired Chiefs RB Peyton Hillis to Cleveland. Quinn served as a Broncos backup QB for the 2010-11 seasons.

The Columbus, Ohio, native originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick (22nd overall) of the Cleveland Browns in the 2007 NFL Draft. He completed 929 passes for 11,762 yards with 95 TDs and 39 INTs at the University of Notre Dame (2003-06).

“I had the opportunity to work with Brady in Cleveland and I can tell you he is a true professional,” said Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “He is a veteran player who knows how to study and prepare for game days and you can count on him to always go out there and give you his best, whether that be on the practice field or on Sundays.”

“Brady is another solid addition for our team,” said General Manager Scott Pioli. “In Brady, we have added another good football player who will increase competition and provide quality depth.”

Winston (6-7, 302) has played in 92 games (87 starts) in six seasons with the Houston Texans. In 2011, Winston was part of an offensive line that helped the Texans finish second in the NFL in rushing yards and paved the way for Houston’s first postseason appearance and win in franchise history. He originally entered the NFL as a third-round selection (66th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft. The Midland, Texas, native attended the University of Miami (Fla.).

“We are always looking for good football players, and when Eric became available, we decided to pursue him,” said Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “He is a big, strong, physical player up front that will be a good addition to our offensive line.”

“We are very happy to add a quality right tackle like Eric to our team,” said General Manager Scott Pioli. “He is a smart lineman who is going to bring passion, intelligence and toughness to our offense.”

Kansas City signs tight end Kevin Boss to free agent deal

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that the club has signed free agent tight end Kevin Boss.

“We are excited about the opportunity to make Kevin a member of the Kansas City Chiefs,” said Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “Kevin has been a part of successful teams in the past and knows what it takes to win. I am eager to add him to our offense.”

“We felt that signing Kevin continued our free agent plan of adding good players to our roster,” said General Manager Scott Pioli. “Kevin has a track record of personal and team success in this league and he is a good fit for us.”

Boss (6-6, 255) has played in 72 games (56 starts) in five NFL seasons. His most recent stop was with the Oakland Raiders in 2011 after spending four years with the New York Giants (2007-10). Boss’ career numbers include 147 receptions for 1,968 yards (13.4 avg.) with 21 TDs. He has started five postseason contests tallying eight receptions for 142 yards (17.8 avg.). In 2007, Boss was part of the New York Giants squad that won Super Bowl XVII. The Philomath, Ore. native originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick (153rd overall) of the New York Giants in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Chiefs sign free agent RB Peyton Hillis

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday that the team has signed free agent RB Peyton Hillis. Entering his fifth NFL season, Hillis joins the Chiefs after spending two seasons each with the Cleveland Browns (2010-11) and the Denver Broncos (2008-09).

“We are happy that Peyton decided to join us,” said Chiefs Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “Peyton is a big, strong, physical back with a lot of talent and he should fit into our system well. We are looking forward to working with him and adding him into our offense.”

“Peyton was a player we planned to target when free agency began,” said Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. “One of our goals going into free agency this year was to build depth at the running back position and we are pleased to add a talented player like Peyton to the mix.”

Hillis (6-2, 250) has played in 52 career games (31 starts), recording 512 carries for 2,161 yards (4.2 avg.) with 20 TDs. He also has 101 career receptions for 805 yards (8.0 avg.) with three TDs.

Hillis led Cleveland in carries and rushing yards in each of the past two seasons after being acquired in a trade from Denver following the 2009 season. In 2011, he carried the ball 161 times for 587 yards (3.6 avg.) with three TDs and caught 22 passes for 130 yards (5.9 avg.) in 10 games.

In 2010, Hillis had his most productive season to date when he rushed 270 times for 1,177 yards (4.4 avg.) with 11 TDs and caught 61 passes for 477 yards (7.8 avg.) with two TDs. He became the only player in Browns history to rush for 1,000-plus yards, record 50-plus receptions and score 10-plus touchdowns in the same season and was named to USA Today’s All-Joe Team.

The Conway, Ark., native originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick (227th overall) with Denver in 2008. He totaled 2,624 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns in 49 collegiate games at the University of Arkansas.

Chiefs re-sign DL Amon Gordon

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday that the club has re-signed DL Amon Gordon.

Gordon (6-2, 305) has played in 33 games (six starts) with Kansas City (2011), Seattle (2010), Tennessee (2008, 2010), Baltimore (2007), Denver (2007) and Cleveland (2004-05). He has tallied 57 tackles (36 solo), 2.0 sacks (-13 yards), two passes defensed, one forced fumble and two QB pressures.

Last season with Kansas City, Gordon notched 20 tackles (12 solo) with 2.0 sacks (-13 yards), a QB pressure and a pass defensed.

The San Diego, Calif., native posted 71 tackles (43 solo), 7.0 sacks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and six passes defensed as a senior at Stanford. Gordon gained 1,353 rushing yards with 19 touchdowns as a senior running back at Mira Mesa High School in San Diego, Calif.

Chiefs name Steven Smith as assistant offensive line coach

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that the team has hired Steven Smith to serve as the club’s assistant offensive line coach.

Smith joins the Chiefs after serving as the run game coordinator/offensive line coach at Tennessee State in 2011. He also served a two-year stint (2009-10) as the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Albany State after two years (2007-08) as the run game coordinator/offensive line coach at Delta State.

Smith completed offseason coaching internships with the Cleveland Browns (2011), Miami Dolphins (2008), Dallas Cowboys (2003-06) and New Orleans Saints (2002). He also coached the offensive line with the Rhein Fire (2006) and the running backs with the Frankfurt Galaxy (2005) of NFL Europe. He played fullback at Southern Illinois (1995-98), where he earned a degree in Pre-Medicine/University Studies. Smith later spent two years (1999-00) in a medical preparation program at Northern Illinois.

Chiefs release Demorrio Williams

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the club has released LB Demorrio Williams.

Williams (6-1, 232) appeared in 60 games (22 starts) with the Kansas City Chiefs (2008-11). In four seasons, Williams tallied 237 tackles (155 solo) with 1.0 sack (-2.0 yards), a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, five passes defensed and three QB pressures. Williams also notched 33 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on special teams.

Prior to joining the Chiefs, Williams spent four seasons in Atlanta (2004-07). His career numbers include 124 games played (65 starts) with 594 tackles (384 solo), 7.5 sacks (-39.5 yards), five INTs, 13 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Williams owns 54 special teams tackles and two blocked kicks.

Chiefs place franchise tag on Dwayne Bowe

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday that the club has placed the franchise tag on WR Dwayne Bowe.

“Today was the league’s deadline to designate a franchise player and we felt it was in the best interest of the Kansas City Chiefs to place the tag on Dwayne,” said General Manager Scott Pioli.

The Miami, Fla., native originally entered the NFL as Kansas City’s first-round selection (23rd overall) in the 2007 NFL Draft. He was a first-team All-SEC selection at LSU, where he caught 154 passes for 2,403 yards and a school-record 26 TDs.

Chiefs sign defensive back Jacques Reeves

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that the club has signed free agent defensive back Jacques Reeves. He has six years of NFL experience with the Houston Texans (2008-09) and Dallas Cowboys (2004-07).

Reeves (5-11, 188) has seen action in 88 games (35 starts) with 164 tackles (146 solo), six interceptions returned for 145 yards, 45 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He has 25 career special teams tackles and has returned 13 kickoffs for 199 yards (15.3 avg.).

Reeves played in 28 games (21 starts) during his two seasons with Houston, totaling 77 tackles (69 solo) with five interceptions returned for 127 yards, including one TD, 26 passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. In 2008, he started all 16 games and recorded 49 tackles (46 solo) with a career-best four interceptions returned for 108 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown, 19 passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

During his first four NFL seasons with Dallas, Reeves played in 60 games (14 starts) with 87 tackles (77 solo), an interception, 19 passes defensed, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He became a starter in 2007, registering a career-high 60 tackles (52 solo).

He saw action in all 49 games during his collegiate career at Purdue (2000-03), totaling 140 tackles, seven interceptions, 17 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He also competed as a sprinter for Purdue’s track team.

Chiefs sign former Raiders CB Stanford Routt

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday that the team has signed free agent CB Stanford Routt.

“Stanford has a proven record of success in the NFL,” Head Coach Romeo Crennel said. “He’s a talented player that has spent seven seasons in the AFC West, so he is familiar with us and our division opponents. We are excited to have Stanford join the team, and we are looking forward to getting started.”

“We are excited that we were able to come to terms with Stanford,” General Manager Scott Pioli said. “He is a talented player, and as we have said in the past, we are always looking to add competition at every position year-round. Stanford’s experience and level of play will make him a solid addition to our defense.”

Routt (6-1, 195) has appeared in 110 career regular season games (53 starts) in seven seasons with the Oakland Raiders (2005-11). Based on press box totals, he has recorded 201 tackles (171 solo), 10 interceptions, including one returned for a 22-yard touchdown, 52 passes defensed, 2.0 sacks (-22.0 yards) and one forced fumble. Routt recorded a career-high four INTs in 2011 and added a team-best and career-high 15 passes defensed. He originally entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick (38th overall) of the Raiders in the 2005 NFL Draft.

The University of Houston product played in 47 games during his collegiate career with 27 starts. While starring in a Cougar uniform, Routt registered 111 solo tackles, with three tackles for loss, seven interceptions returned for 96 yards, 23 passes defensed, a fumble recovery, a blocked kick and three kickoff returns for 36 yards. A multi-sport athlete at Houston, Routt was a sprinter for the Cougars track and field team and was named the 2004 Conference USA Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. Routt attended Connally High School in Pflugerville, Texas.

Chiefs sign defensive back Kyle McCarthy

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the club has signed free agent defensive back Kyle McCarthy. He spent the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos, where he saw action in 12 games with four tackles (two solo) and three special teams stops.

In 2011, he played in four contests with two solo tackles and one special teams stop. He had two tackles (one solo) and two special teams stops in eight games as a rookie in 2010 after originally entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos.

He saw action in 50 career games (26 starts) at Notre Dame, totaling 240 tackles (147 solo) and eight interceptions returned for 108 yards. He started every contest in his final two seasons and became the first Fighting Irish defensive back to eclipse the 100-tackle mark in a season with 110 tackles (64 solo) in 2008 and 101 tackles (66 solo) in 2009.

McCarthy was a two-way standout at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio, where he received first-team all-state honors at quarterback and was named Tri-County Player of the Year as a senior.
