Kansas City completes three-game sweep of Athletics

riggertRoyalsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jeremy Guthrie and Salvador Perez delivered a milestone win for the Kansas City Royals.

Guthrie struck out a season-high seven batters to top 1,000 for his career and Perez homered for his 500th career hit to help Kansas City complete a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 5-3 victory on Sunday.

“We had two big milestones today, which I think are big,” manager Ned Yost said. “So they got that behind them and now they just keep moving forward.”

Omar Infante hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run sixth inning for the Royals, who have won five of six to open a nine-game road trip.

Guthrie (6-5) allowed two runs in six innings and reached 1,005 career strikeouts in his 12th big league season.

“It’s 1,000 more than I thought I’d probably ever thought I’d have,” he said. “It’s a great accomplishment to be able to get there and have the endurance to get to that number.”

Perez took much less time to reach his big number, getting there in his fifth season with a homer in the eighth inning off Edward Mujica that provided insurance for the Royals.

“It means a lot,” he said. “It’s pretty special to me.”

The Royals bullpen did the rest with Wade Davis pitching the ninth for his ninth save in as many chances as Kansas City swept the A’s for the first time since 2008.

Jesse Chavez (4-7) was hurt by an error by third baseman Max Muncy in Kansas City’s three-run sixth inning as Oakland lost its third straight following a season-long five-game winning streak.

“We were playing really good ball lately and this happens,” Muncy said. “It’s really frustrating that we had good momentum going as a team and we were playing really good ball.”

Billy Burns helped spark a two-run third inning for Oakland when he led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to 16 straight games.

Ben Zobrist drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Josh Reddick made it 2-0 when his popup to shallow left fell between shortstop Alcides Escobar and left fielder Alex Gordon for his 500th career hit.

A poor defensive play by Oakland helped the Royals take the lead in the sixth. With runners on first and third and one out, Perez hit a slow grounder to third base. Muncy charged and his throw home was high. Mike Moustakas scored on the fielder’s choice and the runners advanced to second and third on Muncy’s throwing error.

Alex Rios tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Infante gave the Royals their first lead with his two-out hit that knocked out Chavez.

“I got to stop the bleeding and make a pitch,” Chavez said. “It didn’t go our way. I made a pitch to the next hitter for what would have been the third out. I’ve still got to stop the bleeding there. There’s no excuse for it. It’s all my fault.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: OF Lorenzo Cain did not start after tweaking his hamstring stealing a base Saturday. He pinch hit for Eric Hosmer in the eighth and singled. Hosmer, who was moved to DH from first base, sprained his left ring finger on that same double steal Saturday and left Sunday’s game early. He is day to day. … Escobar was also removed in the eighth inning for precautionary reasons with a split nail on his right index finger, but Yost said he thought Escobar would be able to play Monday.

Athletics: Burns (hip flexor) returned to the lineup after missing the previous two games.

STREAKING

Burns had two hits and is one game away from tying the Oakland rookie hitting streak record of 17 games shared by Mike Edwards (1978), Luis Polonia (1987) and Terrence Long (2000).

UP NEXT

Royals: Joe Blanton (2-0) takes the mound at Houston in the opener of a three-game series between first-place teams. Lance McCullers (3-2) pitches for the Astros.

Athletics: Kendall Graveman, who is 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA in seven starts since being recalled from the minors, starts the opener of a three-game series against Colorado.

Morales leads Royals to second straight win at Oakland

riggertRoyalsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — With his team nearing its 43rd win of the season to tie Houston for the most in the AL, Kansas City manager Ned Yost finally relaxed and allowed himself to enjoy the moment.

The Royals are rolling again and the normally stoic Yost broke character to take it in.

Chris Young bounced back from his worst start of the year to pitch six innings and Kansas City beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 Saturday to move a season-high 15 games over .500.

“I was sitting there thinking about that in the ninth inning, this would be a chance to get our high-water mark to 15 over,” Yost said following the Royals’ third consecutive win. “If I would say I’m not excited about being 15 over, I’d be lying. It’s great, but we want to continue to keep going, keep going, keep going.”

Kendrys Morales hit a two-run single in the sixth off Scott Kazmir (4-5) that erased a 2-1 deficit. The Royals won for the fourth time in five games on their road trip.

Young (7-3) allowed four hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out four.

That was in stark contrast to Young’s previous start against Boston when he was tagged for seven runs in 4 2/3 innings.

“He did a great job of changing eye level,” Yost said. “He’d get them looking up then pitch down. He’d get them looking down, then he’d pitch up. He moved the ball in and he’d move the ball out. He just did a great job of executing pitches.”

Ryan Madson and Wade Davis pitched one inning apiece, and Greg Holland worked the ninth for his 16th save.

Sam Fuld doubled for the A’s, who were wearing throwback uniforms from 1965 when the franchise was in Kansas City. Oakland has lost two straight after a season-high, five-game winning streak.

Oakland had two on with no outs in the eighth but failed to score. Stephen Vogt struck out looking against Davis after getting ahead in the count 3-0, and Ben Zobrist hit into a 1-6-3 double play.

“Once they get to the seventh, they feel like they have a good chance with the lead,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said of the Royals. “We had an opportunity. We just didn’t get a big hit there.”

For the second consecutive game these two bitter rivals played without incident. When they played in Kansas City in April, all three games were marred by bench-clearing dustups.

The Royals trailed 2-1 in the sixth before stringing together a walk and two hits. Lorenzo Cain and Hosmer also pulled off a double steal before Morales singled.

Young, who made a throwing error that led to Oakland’s first run, won for the third time in four starts.

Fuld doubled leading off the first, alertly stole third against the Royals shifted defense and scored when Young’s throw to third sailed wildly into foul territory.

Omar Infante doubled in the third, moved up on a balk by Kazmir and scored on a sacrifice fly by Moustakas.

A two-out throwing error by shortstop Alcides Escobar in the fifth led to an unearned run for the A’s in the fifth.

Kazmir owned the lowest home ERA in the majors going into the game, but gave up three runs and seven hits in seven innings.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: RHP Yordano Ventura allowed three runs in four innings during his first rehab start for Triple-A Omaha. He has been out since June 13 with ulnar neuritis.

Athletics: OF Billy Burns (hip flexor) rested for a second straight day, but should be available for the series finale. … Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte (strained right shoulder) played catch with his right arm before the game and reported no pain. … Stephen Vogt was Oakland’s DH a day after getting hit in the right wrist by a pitch from Franklin Morales.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (5-5) needs two strikeouts to reach 1,000 for his career. Teammate Edinson Volquez reached the milestone Friday.

Athletics: RHP Jesse Chavez (4-6) seeks his third consecutive win. He has never won more than two in a row.

Morales, Gordon hit home runs as Royals win at Oakland

riggertRoyalsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon homered to back Edinson Volquez, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 5-2 on Friday night.

Unlike when these two teams met in April, when there were bench-clearing scuffles in all three games, there were no signs of lingering animosity. A few players from both clubs exchanged hugs and handshakes before the game, and both managers downplayed talk of any carry-over effect.

Instead the Royals rode the power of Morales and Gordon, and got another strong outing from Volquez.

Pitching against the A’s for the first time since 2007, Volquez (8-4) gave up three hits and one run in seven innings. Volquez also reached 1,000 strikeouts for his career when he fanned Brett Lawrie in the sixth.

Sam Fuld had an RBI double for Oakland, which had its five-game win streak snapped.

Royals use seven-run fourth inning to take two-of-three from Seattle

riggertRoyalsSEATTLE (AP) — Mike Moustakas hit a two-run home run and Omar Infante had a three-run double in a seven-run fourth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 8-2 on Wednesday night.

Alcides Escobar opened the fourth with a single to right off Roenis Elias (4-5), who had retired the first nine batters. Moustakas followed with his seventh homer over the right-field wall.

The Royals would score five more, all with two outs. Infante unloaded the bases with his double to left, then Jarrod Dyson and Escobar each followed with left-field RBI doubles.

Escobar had three hits — two in the fourth — and scored twice. Moustakas had three hits and two RBI.

Ryan Madson (1-1) worked 1-plus inning of hitless relief for the win.

Kansas City gets shutout by Mariners, former Royal Mike Montgomery

riggertRoyalsSEATTLE (AP) — Rookie Mike Montgomery tossed a four-hitter against the team that drafted him, Dustin Ackley singled, doubled and homered for his first three-hit game of the season and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 7-0 on Tuesday night.

Montgomery (2-2) became the second Mariners pitcher this season to toss a complete game, joining Felix Hernandez, and he became the 10th rookie in Seattle history to toss a complete game. Montgomery retired 17 straight batters at one point, striking out a career-high 10 and allowing only two base runners after the second inning.

Montgomery was originally drafted by the Royals, but was eventually traded to Tampa Bay before landing in Seattle via trade before the start of this season. He walked none and escaped a bases loaded jam in the first inning before overpowering Kansas City the rest of the way.

Blanton, Escobar lead KC to 4-1 win over Mariners

riggertRoyalsMARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State University head women’s basketball coach Michael Smith has announced the additions of Taryne Shull and Jaylah Jackson to the Bearcats’ 2015-16 roster. Shull comes to Northwest after spending her freshman season at St. Bonaventure University in New York. Jackson played two seasons at the University of South Dakota.

“Our depth on the perimeter took a big step forward with the additions of Taryne and Jaylah,” said Smith. “Both of these players have extensive experience at the Division I level, something that I believe will translate very well to an always tough MIAA schedule. These two student-athletes are a great addition to an already impressive recruiting class.”

Shull, a 6-0 wing player from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, saw limited action at St. Bonaventure last season, appearing in four contests. As a prep player at Mt. Pleasant High School, Shull earned All-State, All-District and All-Conference accolades, averaging 16.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. She is the younger sister of Bearcat senior Taylor Shull.

Leavenworth, Kan., native Jackson appeared in 50 games for South Dakota in two seasons, averaging 8.0 minutes per game. She was an All-State honorable mention performer at Olathe Northwest High School in Olathe, Kan., averaging 11.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Northwest Missouri State finished 8-20 last season and went 4-15 in the MIAA.

Royals get blown out by Boston Sunday 13-2

riggertRoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — David Ortiz passed two Hall of Famers on the career home run chart. He was hardly the only Boston hitter who had a big day.

Ortiz launched his 476th homer — which traveled 456 feet, according to ESPN Stats & Information — to move past Stan Musial and Willie Stargell, and the Red Sox banged out 13 extra-base hits Sunday in a 13-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Hanley Ramirez hit his team-best 15th homer and Mookie Betts also went deep for the Red Sox, who set a season high for runs. Xander Bogaerts had three doubles, and Wade Miley (7-6) pitched six scoreless innings.

Ortiz homered leading off the fourth to move into 29th place on the career list.

“I got to meet ‘The Man’ [Musial] one time a long time ago,” Ortiz said. “I didn’t get to see him playing, but he was very impressive in his career. When they start mentioning your name next to those all-time Hall of Famers, that’s something that means you’re doing something right. It’s an honor.”

Betts, Brock Holt and Dustin Pedroia, the first three batters in the lineup, each had three of Boston’s 16 hits. They combined to go 9-for-15 with seven runs and six RBI.

“That’s a good way to finish the road trip,” Boston manager John Farrell said. “Evidenced by the scoreboard, there were a number of really good at-bats, particularly the top three guys setting the tone for us.”

Betts, who missed the cycle by a single, is batting (.556) with nine extra-base hits in a nine-game hitting streak.

Bogaerts stroked a three-run double in a five-run fifth when the Red Sox batted around and chased Chris Young (6-3).

Boston’s first nine hits were all for extra bases. The Red Sox had a season-high eight doubles.

Miley, who pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. He limited the Royals to five singles, walked three and struck out two.

“The offense got some runs early and often and kept scoring the whole game,” Miley said. “It makes it a lot easier to just go out there and try to throw strikes.”

Young, who had tossed 13⅓ scoreless innings in winning his previous two starts, yielded seven runs on three homers, four doubles and three walks in 4⅔ innings.

“I didn’t make enough good pitches,” he said. “That’s what happens when you face a good team and you’re not at your best.”

Lorenzo Cain’s two-run triple with two outs in the ninth prevented the Royals from being shut out.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Red Sox: 3B Pablo Sandoval (sprained left ankle) and C Blake Swihart (sprained left foot) were unavailable after getting hurt Saturday. He could be activated Tuesday.

Royals: LHP Jason Vargas (strained flexor) is playing catch but not throwing off a mound.

EXTRA, EXTRA

The last time the Red Sox had 13 or more extra-base hits in a game was June 4, 2013, against Texas. It was the fifth time since 1914 they’ve had at least 13 extra-base hits in a game.

KRATZ CLAIMED

Kansas City rallies past Red Sox behind Morales’ HR

riggertRoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kendrys Morales homered on his 32nd birthday and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 on Saturday night.

Morales hit a two-run, tie-breaking shot in a five-run fifth off Rick Porcello (4-8). It was his third career homer on his birthday.

The Red Sox lost third baseman Pablo Sandoval (sprained left ankle) and catcher Blake Swihart (sprained left foot) to injuries and designated hitter David Ortiz was ejected in the seventh inning by home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman.

The Red Sox scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, but Porcello imploded in the bottom of the inning with a hit batter, a balk, a walk and four hits.

Porcello lost his sixth straight, matching his career high set in 2012. He allowed six runs, eight hits, two walks and hit two batters in five innings.

Sandoval committed a throwing error in the inning when he hurt his ankle. Swihart was pinch hit for in the sixth after injuring his left foot on a slide into third base the previous inning.

Salvador Perez hit his fifth home run in 12 games for the Royals and Mike Moustakas drove in two runs.

Boston’s Mookie Betts led off the game with a home run, extending his hitting streak to eight games.

Pino roughed up as Royals lose series opener against Red Sox

riggertRoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eduardo Rodriguez pitched capably into the seventh inning, Mookie Betts had a career-best four hits and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Friday night.

Rodriguez (3-1), who gave up nine runs in 4 2/3 innings in his previous start against Toronto, allowed one run and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Alcides Escobar’s RBI-double in the fifth was the first run he allowed on the road in 18 1/3 innings.

The Red Sox batted around in a five-run second inning, which included an RBI-single by Betts. Blake Swihart contributed a two-run double, while Mike Napoli drove in two runs with a single.

Betts is 13 for 22 in his past five games, raising his average to .267.

Boston’s Hanley Ramirez hit his 14th home run in the fifth.

Yohan Pino (0-2), who was making his first start, was roughed up for six runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Pino was recalled from Triple-A Omaha to fill in for Yordano Ventura, who went on the disabled list with ulnar nerve inflammation.

The Red Sox’ 16-hit attack featured five players with multi-hit games, including Pablo Sandoval, who doubled and singled to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Sandoval, who hit .429 against the Royals in the 2014 World Series, was benched Thursday after he used his cellphone during Wednesday’s game in Atlanta.

KC sweeps Milwaukee as Yost becomes Royals’ winningest manager

riggertRoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — No manager in Kansas City Royals’ history has won as many games as Ned Yost.

The latest win came Thursday night when Alcides Escobar had three hits and Jeremy Guthrie pitched six effective innings as the Royals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2.

With the victory, Yost surpassed Whitey Herzog as the winningest manager in franchise history with 411 wins. Earlier in the month Yost moved past Dick Howser, who managed the Royals to their only World Series championship in 1985.

“It’s nice, but again I don’t look at it as an individual achievement,” Yost said “First of all, I don’t feel like I’m in the same class as Whitey Herzog and Dick Howser, one. Two, this is an organizational-wide achievement and I’m proud to be part of that. Everybody is involved.”

Yost said general manager Dayton Moore could have fired him “two or three times, but didn’t.” Yost has a 411-427 record as Royals manager.

Escobar doubled to lead off the Royals’ two-run first then scored on Lorenzo Cain’s sacrifice fly. Escobar singled in the second, stole second base and scored on Mike Moustakas’ two-out single.

Kendrys Morales’ two-out single in the first drove in Eric Hosmer, who had doubled, with the other Royals’ run.

Guthrie (5-4) picked up his first victory since May 20, allowing two runs and seven hits, walked none and struck out four.

Relievers Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland held the Brewers to one hit over the final three innings.

“I hated taking Jeremy out of that ball game after six, but when you’ve got a one-run lead and a fresh Herrera, Davis and Holland down there, the decision was easy,” Yost said.

Davis pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the eighth. He retired Adam Lind on a foul popup then struck out Scooter Gennett looking.

Holland, who gave up three runs, four hits and a walk at Milwaukee on Monday, worked the ninth to earn his 12th save in 13 opportunities.

The Brewers got all their runs in the fifth on Gerardo Parra’s sacrifice fly and Jonathan Lucroy’s two-out RBI single.

Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson (3-8) surrendered three runs and a career-high 11 hits in five innings. In his past two starts, Nelson has allowed 21 hits and 10 runs in 10 innings.

“Right now I’m discouraged because we lost,” Nelson said. “I don’t care how many hits I give up as long as we win. It’s hard to think about anything good right now after a loss.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Brewers: CF Carlos Gomez was out of the lineup for the third time in four games with a right groin and hip issue. Manager Craig Counsell said the injury “is not moving forward; it’s just the same.”

Royals: RHP Yordano Ventura was placed on the DL with right ulnar nerve inflammation. . RHP Kris Medlen, who missed last season after elbow surgery, begins a rehab assignment Friday with a start for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

UP NEXT

Brewers: RHP Taylor Jungmann, a 2011 first-round draft pick, will make his third big league start Friday at Colorado.

Royals: RHP Yohan Pino, who was 0-1 with a 0.64 ERA in six relief appearances earlier this season, was recalled from Triple-A Omaha and will start against Boston.

STREAKS CONTIUNED

Alex Gordon had two hits and Cain had one as they extended their hitting streaks to nine games. Cain drove in six runs in the series against the Brewers, the team that he broke in with in 2010. Gordon has matched his longest hitting streak in the past two years.

STRUGGLING BRAUN

Brewers RF Ryan Braun has one hit in his past 23 at-bats, dropping his average to .249.
