Mustangs lose opener at Sedalia in 10 innings; game two suspended

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs lost the opening game of their doubleheader at Sedalia Monday, 6-5, in 10 innings, and then game two got suspended after two innings due to lightning.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 12-6 and 8-6 in the MINK League after its lost in game one.  The Mustangs led game two 5-1 after two innings and they’re resume that game in the third inning on Thursday when St. Joseph returns to play Sedalia.

In the opener Monday, the Mustangs never trailed in the game until the bottom of the 10th inning.  St. Joe scored single runs in the second, fifth and ninth innings and the Bombers responded in the bottom of each of those innings to tie the game.

It looked like the Mustangs had finally pulled away in the 10th inning as they scored two runs, but Sedalia answered with three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning and pikced up a walk-off win when Jonathan Lynch hit Justin Holt with a pitch with the bases loaded.

St. Joseph’s pitching staff combined to walk nine batters and hit five others.  Logan Jacik started the game and gave up six hits and two runs in five innings of work.  He struck out two and walked two.

Tyler Cox finished 2-for-2 in game one with a home run and two RBI.  Connor Bacon added two hits and Clayton Risch had a pinch hit RBI single.

In the second game, the Mustangs jumped out Sedalia starter Ty Goaff quickly as they scored three runs in the first and two more in the second.  St. Joe had seven hits in the first two innings.

Rain and lightning started early in game two and the umpires suspended the game after two innings and the Mustangs leading 5-1.  St. Joseph is scheduled to play in Sedalia anyway Thursday, so they’ll start the suspended game at 4:00 p.m. Thursday inside Liberty Park Stadium and then play the regularly schedule game at 7:00 p.m.

The Mustangs play a doubleheader Tuesday in Bolivar as they take on Branson. The first pitch of game one is set for 2:00 p.m.

Mustangs fall on the road Sunday at Nevada 8-7

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs’ struggles on the road continued Sunday at Nevada as they lost to the Griffons 8-7.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball falls to 1-3 on the road this season.  They’re now 12-5 overall and 8-5 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs blew two three-run leads Sunday as they scored three in the first, but gave three runs back in the bottom of the inning.

St. Joseph built a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning, but gave up three more runs to Nevada in the bottom of the fourth.

Nevada tied the game 7-7 in the fifth and took the lead for good with a single run in the sixth inning.

Louis Mele, Brady Anderson and Clayton Risch had two hits each for the Mustangs, while Orencio Fisher and Kyle Uhrich each scored two runs.

Jonathan Lynch suffered the loss in relief as he gave up the run in the sixth inning, but St. Joe starter Michael Lydon-Lorson struggled.  He allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.

The Mustangs continue their seven-game road trip Monday with a doubleheader at Sedalia.  The first pitch of game one is at 5:00 p.m. and both games will air live on 680 KFEQ.

Bases loaded walk gives St. Joseph walk-off win over Chillicothe

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs were able to get a walk-off win Friday night inside Phil Welch Stadium as they defeated Chillicothe 2-1.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 12-4 and they’re now in first place in the MINK League North with an 8-4 record.

Mustangs’ second baseman Brett Marr drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie and earn the win.

The ninth inning began with two Chillicothe errors.  St. Joe’s Louis Mele put down a sacrafice bunt to move the runners over and then Mudcats’ pitcher Blake Weiman intentionally walked Connor Bacon to load the bases.  That brought Marr to the plate, and Weiman threw four consecutive balls for the walk-off win for the Mustangs.

Dixon Marble (2-0) pitched a gem for St. Joseph as he threw a complete game six-hitter.  Marble threw only 99 pitchers, 74 for strikes, as he struck out seven and walked one.

Bacon had the other RBI for the Mustangs as he had a two-out single in the first that put them ahead 1-0.  Chillicothe tied the game with a two-out hit in the fourth inning from Dalton Schumer.

The Mustangs, who are just 1-2 on the road, begin a seven-game road trip Sunday at Nevada.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs blow ninth inning lead, fall to Ozark 10-7

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their three-game winning streak snapped Friday night as they lost to Ozark 10-7 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball drops to 11-4 and 7-4 in the MINK League.

Ozark jumped out to a quick lead as they led 3-0 after one inning and added two more in the fourth.  The score remained 5-0 until the seventh inning when the Mustangs started their comeback.

Brady Anderson scored on a double steal in the seventh and then Matt Wollnik added an RBI single.

St. Joseph then scored four runs in the eighth inning to take the lead as Brady Anderson hit a two-run home run and Orencio Fisher scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch.

Mustangs’ closer Steve D’Amico came on in the ninth but he blew his first save of the season.  He allowed five runs, but only two were earned.  D’Amico walked two batters, while Tyler Cox and Brett Marr each committed an error.

Louis Mele went 3-for-5 with a run scored to lead the St. Joe offense.  Anderson and Marr added two hits and two RBI each.

The Mustangs are back at home Saturday as they host Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550.

Mustangs sweep doubleheader against Ozark

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs stayed hot Thursday night as they swept a doubleheader against the Ozark Generals, 3-2 and 6-1, inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won eight of its last nine games and they improve to 11-3 this season and 7-3 in the MINK League.

In game one, the Mustangs rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the fifth inning as Evan McDonald tied the game with an RBI single with two outs and then Matt Wollnik scored on a throwing error on the same play to give St. Joseph the lead.

John Millan earned the win in relief as he went 1.1 innings and didn’t allow a run or a hit.  Steve D’Amico picked up his second save with a scoreless seventh inning.

Tyler Cox led the Mustangs offense with two hits and an RBI.

In game two, St. Joe used a six-run third inning to come back from a 1-0 deficit and that was all Miles Kilgore would need.

Kilgore started and sent six innings.  He gave up just one run on four hits as he improve to 3-0 this season.

McDonald had two hits and an RBI, while Kyle Uhrich drove in two runs.  Cox, Dade Wheeler and Davey Casciola added one RBI each.

The Mustangs play Ozark again Friday night as they host the Generals at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs take down Baldwin City 9-3

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs stayed unbeaten against non-league opponents this season as they defeated Baldwin City 9-3 Wednesday night inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 9-3 this season and they remain 5-3 in MINK League play.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Baldwin City scored three in the third to take the lead.  St. Joseph answered right back in the bottom of the third as they scored three unearned runs and never trailed again.

The game remained 4-3 until the sixth when the Mustangs broke it open with five runs.

Orencio Fisher and Jacob Richardson had two hits each, while Louis Mele drove in two runs and Tyler Cox had a home run and three RBI.

St. Joseph starter Jacob Hurst (1-1) earned the win as he went 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs and four hits.  He struck out three and walked three batters.

Mustangs’ relievers Colton Kenagy, Jonathan Lynch, Matt Diaz and Logan Campbell combined to throw 3.2 innings.  Those four didn’t allow a run and only gave up one hit.

St. Joe gets back into league play Thursday as they play a doubleheader against Ozark inside Phil Welch Stadium.  Game one begins at 5:30 p.m. and both games can be heard on ESPN 1550.

Mustangs lose on a walk-off in Joplin Monday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had their five-game winning streak snapped Monday night in Joplin as they lost 1-0 on a walk-off in the ninth inning.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team falls to 8-3 on the season and 5-3 in the MINK League, with two of their losses coming to the Outlaws.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning as Joplin put two runners on base with one out off of Mustangs’ reliever Jonathan Lynch.  Closer Steve D’Amico came in for Lynch and was able to get a strike out of Brett Macary before Drew Tipton singled with two outs to score J.C. Santos.

Logan Jacik started for St. Joseph and threw 6.1 scoreless innings.  He allowed just five hits with no strikeouts and two walks.

The Mustangs had only five hits and never had more than one baserunner in any inning.  Evan McDonald had two hits.

St. Joe is off Tuesday before playing a non-league game against Baldwin City on Wednesday.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs’ game at Ozark postponed Sunday

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs had an unexpected day off on Sunday as their game at Ozark was postponed.  No make up date has been announced yet.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is 8-2 overall this season and 5-2 in the MINK League.  The Mustangs have won a season high five straight games as they play on the road Monday at Joplin.

St. Joseph is 2-1 so far against the Outlaws as all three games have been played at Phil Welch Stadium.

The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. Monday at Warren Turner Field in Joplin.

St. Joseph Mustangs hang on to defeat Alumni

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs picked up their fifth straigth win Saturday 2-1 inside Phil Welch Stadium as they played a team of Mustangs Alumni.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team is now 8-2 this season.

The game was only a six-inning game as they first three innings Saturday were played by Little League players from around the area.  In that game, the Red team won 5-4 and that’s were the Mutangs and the Alumni took over.

The Alumni got on the board first as Patrick Burkhart drove in Mike Dycus to score an unearned run in the first inning they played.

The Mustangs answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run as Louis Mele scored on an error.

St. Joseph scored its second run in the next inning as Clayton Risch drove in Hayden Steele with a single.  Risch led the Mustangs with two hits.

Antonie Luster made his first start of the season and he gave up one unearned run and one hit in five innings of work.  He struck out five and walked three.

The Mustangs are back on the road Sunday for a MINK League game at the Ozark Generals.  The first pitch is at 6:00 p.m.

St. Joseph extends win streak to four with 4-2 victory over Joplin

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs earned their fourth consecutive win Thursday night as they were able to defeat Joplin 4-2 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 7-2 and 5-2 in the MINK League, while Joplin falls to 4-2 with both losses comes to the Mustangs.

St. Joseph broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Trent Hill and Brady Anderson.  Joplin answered back in the sixth with two runs of their own to tie the game.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning when Hill drove in Dave Casciola to give the Mustangs the lead back and then Kyle Uhrich knocked in Hill with an RBI single.

Hill, Casciola and Evan McDonald each had two hits each.

John Milan earned the win in relief and he threw 1.2 scoreless innings.  George Brandecker started the game and allowed two runs in 5.1 innings.  He struck out eight and walked three.

Steve D’Amico picked up his first save of the season as he threw a scorless ninth inning with two strickouts.

St. Joseph is off on Friday and they’re back at Phil Welch Stadium Saturday to play a team of Mustangs Alumni.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
