Mustangs to host 2019 MINK League All-Star Game

ST. JOSEPH, MO. — The St. Joseph Mustangs Front Office spent this past weekend in Kansas City, Missouri with General Managers from around the league at the MINK League Winter Meetings.

The meetings came to a conclusion on Sunday with a few new changes planned for the 2019 season.

The biggest takeaways from this past weekend include the Mustangs plan to play their first Sunday evening home game since 2012 on June 23rd. Phil Welch will also be the site of the 2019 MINK League All-Star Game, the third All-Star game to take place in St. Joseph.

At the meetings, Mustangs General Manager Ky Turner was named to the MINK League Board as Vice President.

“We’re excited for the upcoming season,” Turner said. “We’ve got a great schedule lined up and are excited to continue to improve the guest experience here in St. Joseph.”

The full 2019 schedule will be released in the coming months.

St. Joseph Mustangs set attendance record in 2018

ST. JOSEPH, MO.​ — The St. Joseph Mustangs 10th Anniversary Season produced a record breaking attendance mark, with 2,448 people on average. This season marks the largest average attendance in the organization’s ten seasons, breaking the 2015 mark of 2,356.

The Mustangs saw an increase of nearly 200 fans per game compared to 2017. This increase was enough to move the team up one spot to eighth among 2018 Summer Collegiate teams, according to BaseballDigest.com. This is the 6th consecutive season St. Joseph has finished in the Top 10 nationally.

Mustangs General Manager Ky Turner says this was a special season for the team.

“There’s nothing better than spending time with friends and family at the ballpark. Over the course of ten years, our Mustangs family has grown so much. Our staff, our players, our coaches- we are all so grateful for the lifelong relationships and memories we have been able to create with each and every guest who walks through the front gates of the stadium,” said Turner. “This is one of the best atmospheres in the country for summer collegiate baseball. We’ve already got Opening Day 2019 circled on our calendars, with a few surprises already planned.”

The Mustangs also found themselves ranked within the Top 10 for Total Attendance in ninth place with 63,599.

Mustangs’ season ends with loss to Clarinda in North Wild Card game

The St. Joseph Mustangs’ season came to an end Wednesday night as they lost to Clarinda 5-4 in the MINK League North Division Wild Card game at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team had to rally from two three-run deficits, but fell short as they end their season 24-24.

Clarinda jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning before the Mustangs got two runs in the fourth. It stayed that way until the seventh when the A’s extended their lead to 5-2.

Trailing by three in the eighth inning, St. Joe got one run back but left the tying runs at second and third base. Then in the ninth inning, the Mustangs scored another run to make it 5-4 and they had the bases loaded with just one out. Clarinda closer Nick Jones then got a strike out and a ground out to end the game and St. Joseph’s season.

Joseph Hietpas suffered the loss as he allowed five runs and nine hits in seven innings of work.

Mason Janvrin, Jordan Maxson and Brody Santilli had two hits each for the Mustangs. Maxson drove in two runs and Alex Phillips scored twice.

Clarinda advances to the MINK League North Division Championship game Thursday at Sedalia.

St. Joseph hammers Clarinda in regular season finale 13-4

The St. Joseph Mustangs closed out their regular season Monday with a 13-4 victory at Clarinda.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team is now 24-23 and they finish 20-22 in the MINK League. The Mustangs play at Clarinda again Wednesday in the North Division Wild Card game. The winner will advance to the North Division championship game Thursday at Sedalia.

On Monday the Mustangs fell behind 4-3 after six innings, but then St. Joseph scored 10 unanswered runs to cruise past the A’s. They scored three runs in the seventh inning, four more in the eighth and three runs in the ninth inning.

Mason Janvrin had four hits to lead St. Joe, while Jordan Maxson and Joshua Lincoln added three hits each. Maxson and Easton Fortuna had three RBI, while Alex Phillips homered and drove in four runs.

Logan Jacik earned the win in relief as he threw 3.1 scoreless innings. He struck out five and allowed just one hit.

The Mustangs went 4-2 against Clarinda this season as the first pitch for the North Division Wild Card game is at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Municipal Stadium in Clarinda.

Mustangs split doubleheader at Clarinda

The St. Joseph Mustangs split a doubleheader at Clarinda Sunday as they lost game one 1-0 before bouncing back to win the nightcap 4-2.

With the split St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team will now have to go on the road for the North Division Wild Card Game on Wednesday.  The Mustangs can’t catch the A’s, who are in second place behind Sedalia, so St. Joseph will play at Clarinda Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Mustangs are 23-23 overall this season and now 19-22 in the MINK League.

In game one, Matt Mulhearn threw a three-hitter for St. Joseph but it wasn’t enough as he allowed one run in the fifth inning. The Mustangs had just five hits on the night, all singles, as Mason Janvrin had two of them.

In game two, the Mustangs rallied for the win as they trailed 1-0 going into the eighth inning before scoring two runs. Then after Clarinda tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, St. Joe’s Chaz Verduzco hit a two-run double that broke the tie and eventually gave the Mustangs the win.

Brody Santilli added two hits, one run and one RBI, while starter Ronnie Wigginton went eight inning to earn the win. He gave up two runs and six hits.

The Mustangs wrap up their regular season Monday as they play at Clarinda again at 7:00 p.m. inside Municipal Stadium.

Mustangs get big win over Clarinda Thursday

The St. Joseph Mustangs earned a big win Thursday as they beat Clarinda 9-6 inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team moves to within 1.5 games of the A’s for the second playoff spot in the North Division with five games remaining. The Mustangs improve to 22-20 and they’re 18-19 in the MINK League.

St. Joseph built a 5-1 lead after two innings, but Clarinda quickly erased the deficit with three runs in the third and one more in the fourth inning. The two teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and then the Mustangs broke a 6-6 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Mason Janvrin and Zack Smith drove in three runs each, while Alex Phillips and Brody Santilli added one RBI a piece. Janvrin, Phillips and Easton Fortuna all had two hits to lead St. Joe.

Dawson Smith earned the win in relief, while Gaylon Viney threw a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season. Starter Corey Cowan allowed four earned runs and seven hits in five innings of work.

The Mustangs play at Phil Welch Stadium again Friday as they host Chillicothe at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.

St. Joseph loses at last-place Chillicothe 8-2

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost on the road Monday as they fell at Chillicothe 8-2.  St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 21-20 and they’re 17-19 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs dug themselves a four-run hole in the first inning that they couldn’t overcome. St. Joseph committed two errors and all four runs were unearned against starting pitcher Brennon Covington.

Chillicothe went on to build a 7-0 lead before the Mustangs finally scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning. St. Joe had just three hits on the night as Mason Janvrin, Patrick Dillon and Chaz Verduzco had one single each. Janvrin and Joshua Lincoln each drove in one run.

Covington (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed seven runs (three earned) and ten hits in five innings of work.

The Mustangs stay on the road Tuesday as they play a critical game at Clarinda. St. Joe is two games back of the A’s for second in the North Division with six games remaining. The first pitch is at 7:00 from Municipal Stadium and you can hear the game on 680 KFEQ or click here.

St. Joseph uses four-run eighth to rally past Clarinda 10-8

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied past Clarinda Friday night inside Phil Welch Stadium as they beat the A’s 10-8.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer basetball team improves to 20-19 and 17-18 in the MINK League. They’re now just one game back of the A’s for second in the North Division.

Clarinda broke a 6-6 tie with two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but the Mustangs answered right back with four runs of their own to take the lead for good.

Jordan Maxson led St. Joseph with three hits, while Mason Janvrin, Zack Smith and Alex Phillips added two hits each. Phillips also drove in three runs.

Gaylon Viney earned the win in relief as he allowed one earned run and four hits in three innings. Drake Kanallakan received a no decision after giving up six runs in six innings.

The Mustangs are back at home Saturday as they host Regal Plastics in a non-league game at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs lose to Clarinda in 10 innings 5-2

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied to force extra innings Thursday against Clarinda, but they lost to the A’s 5-2 in 10 innings inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team falls to 19-19 this season and they’re 16-18 in the MINK League. For the Mustangs to make the playoffs they have to finished first or second in the North Division, but right now they’re in third place behind Sedalia and Clarinda. The Bombers are running away with the divison as they lead St. Joseph by 7.5 games, while the Mustangs now trail the A’s by two games for second place.

The Mustangs led 1-0 after six innings on Thursday, but Clarinda scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take the lead. St. Joseph got an RBI double from Daniel COvert to the tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but they had two chances to win the game with the bases loaded and failed to score another run.

The A’s then put the game away with a three-run 10th inning.

Mustangs’ starter Joseph Hietpas received a no decision as he allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings of work. Mack Stephenson suffered the loss in relief.

Alex Phillips had two of St. Joseph’s six hits, while Covert and Zach Smith each had an RBI for the Mustangs.

St. Joe will play Clarinda against Friday night at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph blows 8-0 lead, loses 12-9 at Sedalia

The St. Joseph Mustangs blew an 8-0 lead Tuesday at Sedalia and they lost to the Bombers 12-9 at Liberty Park Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team drops to 19-18 and 16-17 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs jumped all over Sedalia Tuesday as they scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second and one run in the third inning to build an 8-0 lead. The Bombers needed just three innings to take back control of the game as they scored four in the fourth, one run in the fifth inning and they completed their comeback with a seven-run sixth inning.

St. Joseph pitchers struggled to find the strike zone Tuesday as they walked ten Sedalia batters. Adam Thies started and walked seven as he allowed nine runs in five innings of work. Jonathan Lynch suffered the loss in relief as he walked three and gave up three runs in just one inning.

The Mustangs Zach Smith led the way offensively with three hits, while Mason Janvrin, Joshua Lincoln, Jordan Maxson and Aaron Dees added two hits each. Maxson drove in three runs and Dees added two RBI.

St. Joe is off Wednesday and then they return home Thursday for their first meeting with the Clarinda A’s. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
