Mustangs dominate Sedalia to advance to MINK League Championship Series

The St. Joseph Mustangs dominated Sedalia Thursday 11-0 in the MINK League North Division championship game inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 35-13 and they advance to the MINK League Championship series beginning Saturday at either Ozark or Nevada. The South Division championship game was postponed Thursday and will be played Friday night. It’s the fifth championship series for the Mustangs in the last seven seasons and they’ve won the MINK title in their previous four times.

St. Joseph scored single runs in the first and third innings to take an early lead and then they broke the game open with two runs in the sixth and a seven-run seventh inning.

That was more than enough for Mustangs’ starter Steve D’Amico as he threw a complete-game shutout. He struck out eight, walked two and allowed just five hits as D’Amico is now 6-1 this season.

Colton Pogue and Brady Anderson had two hits each, while Pogue drove in four runs and Anderson added two RBI. Pogue, Brody Santilli and Matt Wollnik each scored two runs.

The best-of-three championship series begins at the South Division winner Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and then will shift to St. Joseph for game two Sunday at 7:00 p.m. If necessary game three will be played Monday at Phil Welch Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Games one and three will be broadcast on ESPN 1550 and game two will air on 680 KFEQ.

Mustangs host Sedalia in postseason opener Thursday

The St. Joseph Mustangs open the postseason Thursday night as they entertain Sedalia in the MINK League North Divisional championship game at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team is 34-13 this season and they won the MINK League North regular season title with a 28-12 record. Sedalia, who is 26-17 this season, advanced to play St. Joe after winning the MINK League North Wild Card game Wednesday at home against Clarinda 7-6.

The Mustangs went 4-2 against the Bombers this season, including a 2-1 mark inside Phil Welch Stadium.

The MINK League South Divisional Championship game will also take place Thursday as Ozark plays host to Nevada. The two winners of the Divisional championship games will meet in a best-of-three championship series starting Friday.

The first pitch Thursday between St. Joseph and Sedalia will be at 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ.

Johnson to step down as Mustangs Manager

St. Joseph Mustangs Manager Matt Johnson will officially step down at the end of the season.

According to a news release, Johnson has been with the team since its inaugural season in 2009, amassing a record of 317-155 with four MINK League Championships and five MINK North Regular Season Division Titles.  Under his tutelage the team placed 4th in the NBC World Series in 2010 and 2012, along with top 10 finishes in 2011, 2014 and 2015.

The Mustangs said the team was informed of Johnson’s decision on Friday. Johnson said it was important for the team to know, but he didn’t want it to be a distraction as they enter the MINK playoffs. No replacement has been named at this time.

Team Owner and CEO Dan Gerson said they plan to start the search for a new manager in the following weeks after the completion of this season.

St. Joseph rallies to defeat Sedalia in regular season fianle

The St. Joseph Mustangs closed out their regular season Monday night as they rallied for a win at Sedalia 6-5.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 34-13 and they finish 28-12 in the MINK League. The Mustangs are off until Thursday when they host either Sedalia or Clarinda in the divisional round of the MINK League playoffs.

St. Joseph trailed 5-2 after five innings at Sedalia Monday, but the Mustangs rallied with one run in the eighth and they scored three in the ninth inning to take their first lead.

Jonathan Lynch earned the win in relief, while Matt Diaz started and went seven innings. He allowed 4 hits and Jake Purl socred for St. Joseph.

The Mustangs playoff game Thursday will be at 7:00 p.m. inside Phi Welch Stadium. The game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ.

Mustangs capture MINK League North Division title with win at Nevada

The St. Joseph Mustangs wrapped of the MINK League North Division title Sunday night as they went to Nevada and defeated the Griffons 5-3. That win coupled with Sedalia’s loss at Clarinda gives the Mustangs their fifth division title in the nine year history of the franchise. The previous four teams to win division titles have gone on to win the MINK League championship in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 33-13 this season and they’re now 27-12 in the MINK League. The Mustangs have home field advantage throughout the MINK League playoffs as they’ll host a divisonal playoff game Thursday at Phil Welch Stadium.

Sunday night at Nevada, the Griffons jumped out to a 1-0 lead and it stayed that way until the fifth inning when St. Joseph first baseman Josh Williams hit a solo home run to tie the game.

The Mustangs took the lead for good in the seventh when Jeremiah Figueroa hit an RBI double and St. Joseph added three in the eighth to extend its lead to 5-1. Nevada rallied with two in the ninth inning but that was as close as they’d get.

Jake Van Vacter went seven innings to get the victory on the mound. He allowed just one run on five hits.

Brady Anderson led the Mustangs’ seven hit attack as he finished 2-for-4 and Figueroa drove in two runs. Colton Pogue and Jacob Richardson added one RBI each.

The Mustangs have three games left in the regular season as they travel to Sedalia Monday night. The first pitch from Liberty Park Stadium in set for 7:00 p.m.

Mustangs game with Chillicothe suspended in the fifth inning

The St. Joseph Mustangs had their game with Chillicothe Saturday night suspended due to rain and lightning. St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team is trailing the Mudcats in the top of the fifth inning 3-1. This is no word on when the game will be finished.

The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Chillicothe answered with single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

Matt Wollnik, Brady Anderson and Erasmo Gonzalez each had a hit for St. Joseph, while Michael Lydon-Lorson began the game on the mound and went just two iinings. He allowed an unearned run on one hit. Osvaldo Raya came on in relief and gave up two runs in 2.2 innings.

The Mustangs (32-13, 26-12 MINK) are scheduled to play at Nevada Sunday night. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on 680 KFEQ.

St. Joseph bounces back to defeat Nevada 12-6

The St. Joseph Mustangs returned to Phil Welch Stadium Friday night and defeated the Nevada Griffons 12-6.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team bounced back from a 2-0 loss Thursday at Chillicothe by pounding out 16 hits. They improve to 32-13 this season and 26-12 in the MINK League.

Nevada scored a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but the Mustangs answered with two of their own in the bottom of the second. After Nevada tied the game in the third inning, St. Joseph ten runs in the next four innings to build a 12-3 lead and cruise to the victory.

Brody Santilli and Jeremiah Figueroa had three hits each, while Figueroa scored four runs. Mike Foley, Joshua Lincoln and Kaleb Reid each drove in two runs for the Mustangs.

Josh Monson started the game and lasted just 4.1 innings as he walked six and allowed three runs on four hits. A.J. Martinez earned the win in relief as he gave up two runs on one hit in 2.2 innings.

St. Joseph remains 1.5 games ahead of Sedalia in the MINK League North Division with four games remaining, as the Bombers defeated Joplin 13-9 on Friday.

The Mustangs remain at home Saturday as they entertain the Chillicothe Mudcats. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

Mustangs get shutout at Chillicothe Thursday

The St. Joseph Mustangs lost their second straight game to Chillicothe as they fell on the road Thursday night to the Mudcats 2-0.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team falls to 31-13 this season and 25-12 in the MINK League. The Mustangs lead in the North Division is down to 1.5 games with five to play as Sedalia defeated Joplin 17-4 on Thursday.

The Mustangs struggled offensively against Chillicothe starter Parker Kirkpatrick as he threw a complete-game shutout. St. Joseph had only six singles Thursday and they weren’t able to get a baserunner past second base. Brady Anderson, Erasmo Gonzlaez and Matt wollnik had two hits each.

Steve D’Amico (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. D’Amico struck out 10 and walked three.

After winning the first three games against Chillicothe this season, St. Joe has dropped their last two.

The Mustangs return home Friday night as they entertain the Nevada Griffons. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joseph cruises to 10-6 win against Joplin

The St. Joseph Mustangs returned to Phil Welch Stadium Wednesday night and defeated the Joplin Outlaws 10-6. St. Joe was the visiting team as the game was a make-up from last month that was scheduled to be played in Joplin.

St. Joseph’s collegiate summer baseball team is now 31-12 this season and 25-11 in the MINK League. Sedalia also won Wednesday night so the Mustangs lead in the North Division remains 2.5 games with six games left to play.

The Mustangs scored two runs in the first inning against the Outlaws and eventually built a 7-0 lead before Joplin finally scored in the bottom of the fourth.

St. Joe pounded out 16 hits as seven different Mustangs had a multi-hit game. Joshua Lincoln and Colton Pogue led the way with three hits each, while Pogue drove in three runs. Jeremiah Figueroa hit his second home run of the season, while he and Josh Williams had two RBI each.

Mitch Steinhoff made his first start of the season and he earned the win. Steinhoff allowed two earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. He struck out four and walked just one.

The Mustangs are on the road Thursday as they play at Chillicothe. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on ESPN 1550 AM.

Mustangs lose on the road at Chillicothe 9-1

The St. Joseph Mustangs had their three-game winning streak snapped Tuesday as they lost at Chillicothe 9-1.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team falls to 30-12 this season and 24-11 in the MINK League. Sedalia also lost Tuesday so the Mustangs’ lead in the North Division remains at two and half.

Chillicothe used a seven-run second inning Tuesday night and they cruised to their first win against St. Joseph this season. Mustangs’ starter Matt Diaz lasted just 1.1 innings as he allowed seven runs on five hits. Diaz also walked five as he falls to 1-3 this season.

The Mustangs had just four hits and the only run came on a bases loaded walk in the third inning.

Brody Santilli, Derek Hussey, Jacob Richardson and Erasmo Gonzalez had one single each for St. Joseph.

The Mustangs play a make-up game against Joplin Wednesday inside Phil Welch Stadium. The game was originally schedule to be played at Joplin, so St. Joe will be the visiting team. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
