WHITE PLAINS, New York (AP) — March Madness hasn’t gone into full swing yet. But chances are, nothing that will happen in the NCAA tournaments this month will match the drama of a game-winning buzzer-beating shot that put a high school kid on the map, at least virtually.

Khalil Edney heaved in a 55-foot, one-handed shot as time ran out to give his New Rochelle, New York high school team a sectional title over rival Mt. Vernon.

The clip has become an online sensation. Former New Rochelle alum Ray Rice of the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens has praised Edney’s game-winner. Duke guard Seth Curry has also raved at Edney’s exploits.

LONDON (AP) — Apparently Batman hasn’t limited his crime-fighting talents to Gotham City. Police in West Yorkshire, England say a man dressed in “a full Batman outfit” showed up at a police station and turned in a suspect in a burglary case.

Closed-circuit images released by police show a caped crusader — wearing the comic hero’s boots, gloves and logo — standing beside a man in a red hoodie.

Authorities say they don’t know the identity of the costumed crime fighter. The suspect is charged with handling stolen goods and fraud-related offenses.

MoDot’s “Tow Plows” will likely be out in force this week. Officials have issued a travel advisory for the next couple of days, as a second winter storm delivers up to a foot of snow.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — State offices in the western two-thirds of Kansas are closed as the state prepares for its second major storm in less than a week.

Gov. Sam Brownback said Sunday that the offices will be closed at least through 6 a.m. Thursday.

His administration was expected to decide Monday whether to close the remaining offices in the state.

 

The governor also extended the state of emergency he declared when the first storm hit Kansas last week.

Brownback said the Kansas Department of Transportation has its equipment and supplies ready for a storm that is forecast to dump between 8 and 24 inches across the state.

The state emergency operations center was activated Sunday and will remain operational on a 24-hour basis until further notice.

Officials snow totals were hard to come by Friday. The AP reported 17 inches in some areas of Kansas. At 2:30pm Thursday, the Weather Service told us there were 6″ on the ground, with snow still falling. Thundersnow caused some very heavy snowfall rates in Kansas City and Wichita, two-to-four inches per hour falling for short periods. Nine inches were reported at KCI through 9pm Thursday. About a foot fell in areas south of the Missouri River in KCMO.

Authorities in Kansas City on Wednesday found a body in the rubble of J.J.’s Restaurant in the Country Club Plaza. The body was not immediately identified.

State utility regulators launched an investigation into the incident. The Missouri Public Service Commission said Wednesday that five staff members were dispatched to the site of Tuesday evening’s explosion. Fifteen people were injured in the blast, and one person was killed.

A meteor shower over Russia rains space junk on a half-dozen cities, leaving more than 500 people injured. The Russian Interior Ministry says hundreds were cut by flying glass.

A ministry spokesman says at least three people are gravely injured. The Russian Academy of Science says the meteorite likely weighed about ten tons before entering the Earth’s atmosphere at 33-thousand miles per hour.

Non government sources in Russia say the meteorite was shot down by air defense forces. We have no independent confirmation of that.

Meanwhile, NASA will offer live coverage when a small asteroid makes a flyby close to the Earth later today. Astronomers say there’s no danger when the space rock named DA-14 cruises by the Earth at an altitude of 17-thousand miles, which is inside the orbit of most communications satellites.

Hackers infiltrated the Emergency Alert System (EAS) of local station KRTV in Great Falls, Montana, and issued the zombie alert, the station said on Tuesday.

Viewers were warned of a so-called zombie apocalypse and advised not to tangle with the monstrous creatures.

Afterward, the FCC sent out an alert to all EAS participants, requiring them to take immediate action.

Stations were urged to secure their equipment, including resetting passwords, and securing firewalls.
