Our friends at the Kansas Department of Transportation provided this video of the demolition on Wednesday of the old U.S. 77 Big Blue River Bridge near Blue Rapids in Marshall County, Kansas.

Officials say the new bridge, unveiled last month, provides added safety benefits.

The 40-foot wide structure, with two 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders, will provide more room for today’s wider vehicles.

Also, the addition of a deceleration lane for northbound drivers turning east onto K-9 and an acceleration lane for eastbound drivers on K-9 turning north onto U.S. 77 will provide added safety for turning movements from the highway.

Older residents in Oklahoma were reminded of the “dirty thirties” Thursday after a dust storm reduced visibility to ten feet or less, causing a huge pileup on I-35 just south of the Kansas border.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokesman Cole Hackett said the 8-mile stretch of Interstate 35 reopened Thursday evening after being closed for several hours.

No one was killed in the multi-vehicle accident that shut down the interstate, though Blackwell Police Chief Fred LeValley said nine people were injured.

Here are a couple of examples of daredevils, or jackasses (you decide). The first is Felix Baumgartner’s record setting free fall from space, in which he broke the speed of sound. The second is a base-jumper in Norway who should probably pay more attention to preparation. Richard Henriksen survived a 1,200 meter fall after the metal rod he was swinging on broke.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alex Karras, who gained fame in the NFL as a fearsome defensive lineman and later as an actor, has died. He was 77.

Craig Mitnick, Karras’ attorney, said Karras died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, surrounded by family.

 

Karras had been suffering from dementia. He was among the more than 3,500 NFL players suing the league regarding the treatment of head injuries.

The Detroit Lions drafted Karras, who grew up in Gary, Ind., 10th overall in 1958 out of Iowa and he was a four-time All-Pro defensive tackle over 12 seasons with the franchise.

Karras may be even better known for his work as an actor. He portrayed an adoptive dad in the 1980s sitcom “Webster,” and punched a horse in the 1974 comedy classic “Blazing Saddles.”
