Mustangs Set More Attendance Records

Phil WelchIt’s become an annual tradition. The St. Joseph Mustangs again find themselves in the nation’s elite not only on the field, but also in attendance.

Propelled by a record setting number of wins and a third M.I.N.K. League Championship, the 2014 Mustangs campaign featured a collection of record setting numbers. The Mustangs broke the nightly game attendance record twice; first on June 21st with 4,427 fans, and then again on July 19, when 5,345 fans entered Phil Welch Stadium.

For the season, the Mustangs averaged a record 2,289 fans each game-a 9% increase from 2013. For the 2014 campaign, the Mustangs hosted crowds of 2,000 or more on fifteen occasions, 3,000 or more eleven times, and 4,000 or more four games.

Ballparkdigest.com recently released the 2014 average attendance per game rankings for College Summer Baseball teams, and the St. Joe Mustangs found their way up the rankings- placing at number six nationally, improving upon their ranking from 2013.

Topping off the records, the Mustangs find themselves ranked fifth nationally in the 2014 Summer Collegiate Attendance by Total number of Fans, with a total of 73,242 fans- a byproduct of additional home games played at Phil Welch and the record setting nightly average. In 2013, the Mustangs hosted a total of 54,612.

Mustangs General Manager Ky Turner noted, “St. Joseph has etched its position nationally not only as a top destination for college players, but also as one of the top communities for supporting the team. Our goal from day one is to provide affordable family fun, and to one day lead the nation in attendance for Summer College Baseball. I’m very excited for the future of the Mustangs.”

Preparations for the 2015 campaign are already underway. Through the first six seasons, the Mustangs have had five top ten attendance rankings, three MINK Championships, three trips to the National Baseball Congress World Series (two top 5 finishes), and six straight years of leading the MINK League in attendance.
