Mustangs stay alive at NBC World Series with 3-2 win over Derby

The St. Joseph Mustangs stayed alive Friday at the 77th Annual NBC World Series in Wichita as St. Joe’s summer college baseball team defeated the Derby (KS) Twins, 3-2, in the consolation bracket.

The Mustangs will play again Sunday in the consolation bracket against the Hutchinson (KS) Monarchs.  The game time is yet to be determined.

On Friday, St. Joseph took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Spiker Helms, but Derby came right back against Mustangs’ starter Kyle Jackson to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.

St. Joe had numerous opportunities to take the lead and left the bases loaded twice, but couldn’t break through until the ninth inning.

Cameron Bentley singled to the start the inning and then Spiker Helms drove him in to give the Mustangs the lead.  Brent Seifert then picked up an RBI as he drove in Helms to make it a 3-1 game in the ninth.

Derby was able to get their first two batters on base in the ninth inning against Jackson, but Doug Shields came on to record the save despite allowing one of those runs to score and the mustangs picked up the win.

St. Joseph improves to 42-11 this summer.

The Mustangs pounded out 13 hits Friday as Helms, Seifert, Bentley, Kris Koerper and Nate Bauman had two hits each.

Kyle Jackson (6-1) went eight innings to earn the win as he allowed just five hits and two runs.  He struck out six and walked three.  Shields picked up his 13th save of the summer.
