A gas leak touched off an explosion and fire at a restaurant in Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza Tuesday evening, injuring at least fifteen people.
Mayor Sly James says their top priority now is to find one person who is still not accounted for. James says they’re racing the clock, and the weather, as a major winter weather system moves into the area.
The fire at J.J.’s Restaurant near 48th Street and Belleview Avenue broke out just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Witnesses reported a strong smell of natural gas throughout the area.
The Associated Press reported three people unaccounted for Tuesday night, but some employees at the restaurant may have left the area. Rescue workers with dogs and searchlights combed the area overnight, and found one victim. Another is still missing.
KMBC-TV reported that firefighters and representatives from Missouri Gas Energy were checking for the source of a gas odor before the explosion.
Police spokeswoman Rhonda Flores said it appeared that a car crashed into a gas main near a restaurant at 6:03 p.m.
Video showed dozens of firefighters and other emergency responders battling a massive blaze that appeared to have engulfed an entire block, with flames burning through the roofs. Black smoke swirled in the air and debris littered surrounding streets.
