Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney Dwight Scroggins says his office will not file state charges against a Gower man accused of counterfeiting.
The 29-year-old man allegedly used five bogus $100 bills to purchase a truck on Sunday. The “victim” later demanded and received the truck back.
Scroggins says there are two reasons charges will not be filed. First, there is no restitution involved, and second, the suspect has an identified mental condition that affected his ability to know right from wrong.
Police Captain Matt Rock says the man had five $100 counterfeit bank notes which he passed to another individual in payment for a vehicle. That transaction fell apart and the victim got his car back.
After expiration of the 24-hour investigative hold the suspect was released without a charge being filed.
Rock says the case is still under investigation and is under review by agents of the U.S. Secret Service.
