“Justice For Daisy” Rally (Photo Gallery)

Sheriff Darren White prepared for a crowd of two thousand people. About 200 showed up.

An enthusiastic gathering on Maryville’s courthouse square heard speakers talk about sexual abuse of women, with Daisy as the focal point. Many in the crowd held daisies in her honor.

Daisy is the Northwest Missouri girl whose sexual assault two years ago was revisited earlier this month in a newspaper report that spurred outrage around the world.

The Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney filed criminal charges against three teenagers in the case. A juvenile was convicted in connection with the sexual assault of another teen.

But charges against the two high school students charged in the attack on Daisy were dismissed. Prosecutor Bob Rice insists that the victim and her mother quit cooperating after the charges were filed. The family denies that.

Rice last week asked for a special prosecutor to take a new look at the case, and on Monday Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker was given the assignment.
