(AP) – The Kansas City school board plans to sue to stop the state from enforcing a student transfer law while the district’s case for provisional accreditation is pending.

Airick Leonard West, board president, said Thursday the district would file the lawsuit Friday in response to a Missouri Supreme Court ruling this week upholding a state law requiring the unaccredited Kansas City school district to pay for students to attend class elsewhere.

Kansas City’s schools have been unaccredited since 2012, but student transfers have been on hold because of its legal challenge.

The district has argued that it’s improved enough to earn provisional accreditation. If the state were to grant the higher accreditation, the district and its neighboring districts wouldn’t be exposed to the transfer law.
