McCaskill responds to Justice Department complaint against USIS

McCaskillU.S. Senator Claire McCaskill has released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Justice formally filed its complaint against USIS, the company responsible for conducting the background investigations for both national security leaker Edward Snowden and Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis. According to the Justice Department, the company allegedly directed its background check investigators to take shortcuts in their investigations while representing to the government that the investigations were complete and accurate:

“By now, the stunning failures of this company-and the resulting threats to our national security-are well-documented. But we can’t wait for the next disaster before tackling something as serious as lapses in protecting our nation’s secrets and our secure facilities. We’ve seen swift action to boost accountability over these contractors, and I’m now calling on my colleagues to pass our bipartisan bill that would strengthen background checks through automatic reviews.”

McCaskill-Chairman of the Subcommittee on Financial & Contracting Oversight-previously revealed at a Senate hearing that USIS was under criminal investigation, and sharply criticized the company’s oversight practices. McCaskill also questioned the fact that USIS had two separate contracts with the federal government-one to conduct background investigations, the other to oversee background investigations conducted by contractors, including USIS itself.

McCaskill has introduced a bill with Senator Jon Tester of Montana that improves oversight of the security clearance process by empowering the Office of Personnel Management to use resources from its Revolving Fund to audit and investigate contractors that conduct background checks. Separate versions of that bill have been approved by both the Senate and the U.S. House, and are awaiting final action to resolve those differences before heading to the President for signature into law.

In October, McCaskill also joined with Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine to introduce bipartisan legislation that would implement an automated review of public records and databases for any information that might affect the security clearance status of individuals who have such a clearance. That legislation is also sponsored by Senators Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota.

Jayhawk freshmen Embiid, Wiggins named to Tisdale Award Midseason list

riggertKUOne day after being named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason List for the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Player of the Year, Kansas freshmen Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins have been named to the Wayman Tisdale Award Midseason List for the outstanding freshman of the year, the USBWA announced Friday.

Kansas is one of two schools that have multiple student-athletes on the nine-member midseason list with the other being Kentucky. Members of the USBWA’s board of directors chose the players to be included on the list as contenders for the 2014 Wayman Tisdale Award.

Embiid leads Kansas in rebounds with a 7.4 per game average, good for eighth in the Big 12. The 7-0 Yauonde, Cameroon, center is tied for the conference lead with 2.8 blocked shots per game. A two-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Embiid’s 50 blocked shots this season are already third on the all-time KU freshman list and his eight against Oklahoma State (1.18.14) broke his own KU freshman record of seven set against UTEP (11.30.13). Embiid leads KU with four double-doubles this season. Embiid was named the USBWA’s Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Week following his performance against OSU.

Wiggins leads Kansas with a 15.2 scoring average, which also leads the Big 12 freshman class and is 10th overall in the conference. The 6-8 Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, guard has five games of 20-plus points and pulled down a season-high 19 rebounds at then No. 8 Iowa State (1/13). Wiggins is 50-of-59 (84.7 percent) from the free throw line in his last 10 games after hitting 10-of-12 charity shots during his 17-point effort in the win versus No. 23 Baylor on ESPN Big Monday (1/20). He has made 20 threes this season, leads KU with 17 steals and his 6.1 rebound average is third on the team.

Last season, Kansas’ Ben McLemore was named to the Wayman Tisdale Award Midseason List. McLemore was also a finalist for the award and was later named USBWA All-America Second Team.

No. 8/11 Kansas is 14-4 overall and the only undefeated team in the 2014 Big 12 Conference race at 5-0 heading into its Saturday, Jan. 25 game at TCU (9-9, 0-6). The Jayhawks have defeated four nationally-ranked teams in each of its last four outings, a feat last accomplished by North Carolina in 1996-97.

Mo. Senators asking about price of Propane

(

Sen. Mike Parson, of Boliva
Sen. Mike Parson, of Boliva

AP) – Missouri senators are calling on Attorney General Chris Koster to investigate a recent spike in propane prices.

Sen. Mike Parson, of Bolivar, said Friday that companies are sending more propane overseas, leading to a shortage throughout the Midwest. He says the shortage causes prices to rise and gives big profits to corporations. He wants Koster to see if companies are price gouging.

The Missouri Propane Gas Association says the shortage is caused by more exports and increased demand due to colder weather and higher crop yields. Propane is used to dry crops after a harvest.

A spokeswoman for Koster had no immediate comment Friday. Parson says the attorney general’s office told him they would meet Monday to consider his request.
