After deaths, shelter gets grant to educate on train safety

Railroad Crossing 001(AP) — A Topeka homeless shelter has received a $5,000 train safety education grant after two recent railroad track deaths of residents.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported the Topeka Rescue Mission is among 21 public safety agencies and other groups nationwide receiving such grants from Union Pacific.

A woman staying at the Rescue Mission died in May on nearby tracks in a suicide, and a male guest died in July in what was believed to be an accident.

Rescue Mission executive director Barry Feaker says at least six people have been fatally injured on the tracks in the past 25 years. Feaker says the grant will be used to create educational materials and expand safety education efforts.

Saint Joseph Woman Falls Six Stories, Critically Injured

SJPD patchA woman fell from a sixth floor window at the Village East Tower in Saint Joseph late yesterday afternoon.  Police say the 41 year old victim was taken to Heartland Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Officials say it’s not known whether the fall was accidental or intentional.  It happened shortly after 4 pm from a window on the north side of the high-rise apartment building at 1218 Village Drive.  The incident is under investigation.

Gone with the wind chill: Gusts spread winter pain

Screen Shot 2014-01-03 at 5.58.41 PM (AP) — It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity, goes the old saying.

For the tens of millions of Americans currently trapped in the deep freeze: It’s not the cold, it’s the wind.

Air temperatures plunging into the negative teens, twenties and even thirties Sunday into Monday are bad enough. But add wind speeds of even a few miles per hour, and what’s already deeply unpleasant becomes downright dangerous.

Severely low wind chills are a serious threat to the body. Emergency room doctor Douglas Brunette from Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis says he’s “seen frostbite occur through clothing.” He says it’s important to have clothes “made for the elements.”

Winds are blowing arctic air across large swaths of the U.S. — with temperatures suppressed by what meteorologists call a “polar vortex.”

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 5.12.30 AMTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The president of a south-central school board has been elected to the leadership of the Kansas Association of School Boards.

A recent delegate assembly in Wichita chose Don Shimkus, of Oxford, as the association’s president-elect designee. He will begin serving as president-elect on July 1 and serve as president on July 1, 2015.

Shimkus says he will work to ensure that all Kansas communities have the resources they need for public education.

The association has nearly 5,000 members representing school boards, community colleges and technical schools.

Missouri Using New High School Equivalency Exam

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 5.03.37 AM(AP) — Missouri has dropped the GED and made the switch to a new high school equivalency exam.

Beginning this month, Missouri began using HiSet, which Educational Testing Service is offering. The switch came with the introduction of a more costly computer-based version of the GED.

Even though the state went with the lowest bidder, the new exam will be more costly for some test takers.

Previously it cost $40 to take the GED once, with each retake costing another $40.

Missouri adult education official Tom Robbins says the most affordable way to take the HiSET is to pay $95 for the five-test battery. Participants get two free retests within a 12-month period. Out of that amount, $10 goes to the state to administer the program.

Flight Makes Emergency Landing at KCI

KCI aerial(AP) – An American Airlines flight has made an emergency landing at Kansas City International Airport after a flash drive was found in a bathroom.

Airport spokesman Joe McBride says the discovery was made Sunday afternoon as Flight 24 was headed from San Francisco International Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

McBride says the Boeing 767 was taken to an area away from the terminal and was being searched. The 227 passengers and crew members were evacuated. McBride says it is “a new day and age since 9-11” and that officials take precautions if something is deemed suspicious.
