Mother of man shot by Kansas City police sues

CourtKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The mother of a man who was shot to death by Kansas City police is suing the officers and city officials.

Anna May Wealot alleges in a wrongful death lawsuit filed Thursday that police used unreasonable force when they shot 21-year-old Waylen Wealot in March 2013.

The lawsuit alleges Wealot fired at people in a van that had tried to hit his brother. Police who heard the shots went to the home and Wealot ran. Police eventually shot him several times.

The Kansas City Star reports the lawsuit says Wealot threw the gun on the ground as he ran and never fired at the officers.

Police say Wealot ignored their commands to stop shooting at the van. Police officials say they don’t comment on pending litigation
