Mustangs rally past Clarinda for fifth straight win

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs won their fifth consecutive game Sunday night as they rallied for an 11-10 victory at Clarinda.

St. Joe’s summmer college baseball team improves to 26-10 this season and they’re 16-9 in the MINK League.

The Mustangs fell behind 10-9 after seven innings, but Ryan Abernathy scored on a wild pitch by the A’s Jason McDonald and then Kyle Richards hit a 2-out RBI single to score Trent Hill and give St. Joseph the lead back.

There were seven lead changes in the game as both pitching staffs struggled in the 3 1/2 hour game.

The Mustangs used six pitchers, while Clarinda used five and the two teams combined to walk 19 batters and hit four more.

St. Joe starter Brandon Baker was taken out after just one inning as he allowed four runs on four hits.  Jon Pomatto worked 1.2 scoreless innings to get the win, while Grant Gavin earned his third save of the summer as he threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Joe Koerper led the Mustangs’ offense as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.  Richards drove in two runs while Abernathy scored four runs and Hill added three runs scored.

St. Joseph is off Monday and they return to Phil Welch Stadium Tuesday for a non-league game against Baldwin City.  The first pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
