TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The candidates for Kansas insurance commissioner are having a forum next month in Wichita

The event is Oct. 17 at the Wichita Marriott hotel and is sponsored by the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents. The forum is part of an annual conference.

Republican nominee Ken Selzer and Democratic candidate Dennis Anderson are running to replace retiring three-term GOP incumbent Sandy Praeger.

Praeger has been unusual among prominent Republicans for publicly defending the federal health care overhaul championed by Democratic President Barack Obama. She’s also broken with her party to endorse Anderson.

The Democrat is from Overland Park and operates a family business providing educational services to insurance and financial services firms.

Selzer is as a certified public accountant and a global reinsurance company executive. He is from Leawood.

United Way of Greater St. Joseph held a campaign report rally Thursday and announced it’s a little more than $200-thousand dollars closer to its $3-million dollar goal.

Over 100 community leaders stopped in at Berkshire Hathaway Homeservices Stein & Summers Real Estate for the progress report.

After a performance of the Central High School Drum line battery, Campaign Chair Adam Stein reported on Campaign progress. Since the Sept. 4 Kickoff, a total of $223,580.63 additional dollars have been pledged.

“I’m very happy with the progress up to this point,” said Stein. “I think we still have a lot of work ahead of us but we’re currently in the process of starting new rallys and I think we’re right where we need to be.”

United Way is trying to raise $3,145,000 to be used to impact lives throughout Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas through education, health, and financial stability. So far, $1,056,495.52  has been pledged to the campaign, which is 33.59% of the goal.

SALINA, Kan — A Salina man and woman have lost thousands of dollars in a scam where they thought they had won a lottery on Facebook.

Salina Police Capt. Chris Trocheck said a friend told them he saw they had won the MF Facebook Lottery.

The man and women checked Facebook and since June 14, the 43-year-old man and 49-year-old woman sent several Moneygrams totaling $6,000 to locations in Nigeria and Mississippi to cover taxes and fees before contacting police this week to report the fraud.

Methodist camps in Mo. shut down

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Four longtime Methodist youth camps across Missouri are facing an uncertain future following the dismissal of the sites’ directors.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church camps will not be in operation next summer. The conference released a statement earlier this month saying its camping and retreat board decided to go in a new direction with camp programming.

Although the conference receives a $435,000 annual subsidy to run the camp, the year ended with nearly a $48,500 deficit.

Hundreds of people are rallying in an attempt to save them. A 24-year-old Chillicothe woman, who began attending a camp near Lawson when she was 8, says there’s still hope because the camps haven’t been sold yet.

The conference’s director of connectional ministries says a decision could be made at a June meeting.

Missouri Western State University student enrollment up

Student Enrollment up

Enrollment at Missouri Western State University is up almost 2 percent from a year ago on the official census date, four weeks into the start of the fall semester. A total of 5,926 students are enrolled this fall, coming from 42 states and 35 countries.

“We’re certainly excited to see enrollment growth, and honored that students have chosen Missouri Western to help them achieve their goals,” said Dr. Jeanne Daffron, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

The total of 5,742 undergraduate students and 184 graduate students is up by more than 100 students over last year’s total, and is the fourth highest total in school history. Two key factors in the growth, Dr. Daffron said, were the number of incoming freshmen and the number of new international students. The number of first-time freshmen seeking a bachelor’s degree is up by about 7 percent, to 1,042. The number of enrolled international students grew by nearly 60 percent this year, to 129. That compares to just eight international students six years ago.

Another key factor in the enrollment growth is an increase of about 3.5 percent in Missouri Western’s freshman-to-sophomore retention rate. Missouri Western has created a College Completion Team to focus on improving services and procedures that guide students to graduation. An enhanced advising process and degree audit software allow students to see exactly where they are on their degree path and make knowledgeable decisions if they want to consider changing their major. Another recent improvement to the Early Intervention Program enables faculty and student services staff to work seamlessly to remove challenges and obstacles to course or degree completion.

Another factor helping retention is that students are coming to Missouri Western better prepared academically: this is the tenth straight year that the average ACT score of the incoming freshman class has improved, and the average ACT score of full-time students enrolling directly from high school continues to be above the national average.

“We are especially pleased that enrollment growth is occurring in these areas,” Dr. Daffron said. “Increasing international enrollment and student retention in particular have been key parts of Missouri Western’s strategic plan, and will be vitally important to the university and the region.”

ST. LOUIS (AP) – A victims rights group is seeking a federal investigation into whether officials at Fort Leonard Wood discouraged trainees from reporting allegations of sexual assault and harassment.

The group, Protect Our Defenders, said Thursday it was reacting to testimony this week during a court martial of a former drill sergeant for forcing trainees to perform sexual acts. Two soldiers testified during the trial that trainees were told their class wouldn’t graduate if they reported sexual misconduct claims.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Maj. Gen. Leslie Smith, post commander, hasn’t made a public statement about the testimony.

Missouri’s two senators, Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt, said in statements Thursday that they are working to determine the accuracy of the testimony and give the military the means to deal with sexual misconduct.

Fifth defendant pleads guilty in Mo. slaying

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — The last of five suspects pleaded guilty for his role in the death of a Joplin man.

Johnathan Taylor pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder and first-degree burglary in the July 2012 death of 23-year-old Jacob Wages.

Prosecutors say the five suspects mistakenly believed that Wages had drugs and drug money and killed him during a robbery at his home.

The Joplin Globe reports  the 21-year-old Taylor’s plea deal caps the sentences he could receive at 25 years for the murder conviction and five years burglary, with the sentences running concurrently.

All the other defendants, including Taylor’s younger brother, have also pleaded guilty in the case.
