WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate investigators have delivered a damning indictment of CIA interrogation practices after the 9/11 attacks, accusing the agency of inflicting pain and suffering on prisoners with tactics that went well beyond legal limits.

The torture report released Tuesday by the Senate Intelligence Committee says the CIA deceived the nation with its insistence that the harsh interrogation tactics had saved lives. It says those claims are unsubstantiated by the CIA’s own records.

The 500-page report represents the executive summary and conclusions from a still-classified 6,700-page full investigation.

Charity softball tournament leads Trenton police to investigate

Trenton Mo PD logoA fundraiser to help a family offset the cost of burial expenses is being investigated by the Trenton Police Department after no monetary funds were ever distributed to the family.

According to Trenton Police Chief Tommy Wright the department is investigating the theft of money from an August 2014 charity softball tournament.

“Several area residents formed a two day softball tournament at Griffin Field…to raise money for three area men who had died in a vehicle accident in 2009 and in 2012,” Wright said in a statement released on social media. “The money raised was to be distributed to the families to help offset the cost of burial and headstone expenses.”

However, to date the police department said no families have ever received any funds raised from the event.

Wright said that the department has developed leads on an individual or multiple individuals in the investigation and has asked anyone who contributed to the softball tournament to contact him at the Trenton Police Department via email at [email protected] or by phone at 660-359-5557.

Currently an investigation is on going.

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas City suburb of Prairie Village, Kansas, is considering efforts to reduce the use of plastic grocery bags.

Similar efforts in other U.S. cities have met with resistance. But some cities, such as Seattle, have banned the bags. Chicago and the state of California have enacted bans that will take effect next year.

The Kansas City Star reports Roeland Park and Garden City, Kansas, both studied the issue but dropped it.

Ben Claypool, chairman of a citizens committee studying the issue in Prairie Village, says the idea is getting a lot of support. The committee is considering an outright ban or fining shoppers who use plastic.

Columbia, Missouri, also is considering an ordinance that would prohibit anyone selling perishable food from providing the bags.

Obama wants diverse skills for federal managers

ObamaJIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama wants top management prospects in the federal bureaucracy to develop a more diverse set of skills as the upper ranks of the federal workforce retire in greater numbers.

He also is aiming to improve the quality of government service in the face of user satisfaction rankings that place the federal government below the private sector.

In a series of executive actions Tuesday, Obama is launching a leadership program for future government career executives with a goal of breaking out of a tradition of promoting senior bureaucrats from within their own agencies.

The administration is also creating a program of customer service awards to reward excellence by individual federal employees.

Nissan, Hyundai recall vehicles for fuel leaks, brake lights

RecallDETROIT (AP) — Nissan is recalling about 470,000 cars and SUVs worldwide to fix a problem that can cause fuel leaks.

In the U.S., the recall covers about 134,000 vehicles with direct fuel injection engines. That includes Nissan’s Juke SUV from the 2012 through 2014 model years, and the Infiniti M56 and QX56 from 2012 and 2013. Also affected are Infiniti QX70 and QX80 SUVs from 2014 and 2015.

Documents posted by U.S. safety regulators say a fuel pressure sensor may not have been tightened properly. That can cause a leak and fire. No fires or injuries have been reported to Nissan.

Other Nissan and Infiniti models are affected in Japan, North America, Europe, the Middle East, China, Latin America, Africa and other markets.

Dealers will tighten the sensors starting in January.

Hyundai is recalling nearly 43,000 luxury cars in the U.S. because the brake lights can fail to illuminate.

The recall covers certain Genesis cars from the 2009 to 2011 model years and the some Equus (ECK-was) vehicles from 2011.

Hyundai documents posted Tuesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say the agency contacted Hyundai about the problem in October after noticing consumer complaints. There are no reports of crashes or injuries.

Dealers will repair the stop lamp switch circuit for free. Hyundai expects to begin notifying owners early next year.

The affected Genesis cars were made from April 30, 2008, to Nov. 21, 2010. Equus models being recalled were made from July 31, 2010, to Nov. 21, 2010.

Electric company seeks rider for costs at S E Kansas plant

KCC logoJOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — The Empire District Electric Co. in Joplin is asking the Kansas Corporation Commission for an increase to pay for environmental compliance at its Asbury plant.

The environmental rider would mean a $3.67 per month increase for Kansas customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of energy. Empire is asking that the rider be effective March 1.

Empire spokeswoman Julie Maus says the environmental costs include equipment needed to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions, particulate matter and mercury emissions.

The Joplin Globe reports  the total cost is between $112 million and $130 million.

Empire in August asked the Missouri Public Service Commission for a 5.5 percent increase, or $24.3 million, from its Missouri customers for environmental compliance. That would add about $9.87 per month for a residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Missouri bill would give leave for abuse victims

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri lawmaker is proposing some victims of domestic violence get two weeks of unpaid leave from work.

Democratic state Sen. Gina Walsh of St. Louis recently filed legislation that would require employers give their workers time to cope with abuse. Employees would qualify if they or a family member experienced any of a number of forms of domestic violence.

They would need to notify their boss two days in advance of time off.

The bill aims to give survivors of domestic violence time to seek counseling, medical attention or legal help.

Workers at companies with 50 or more employees would get two weeks off a year. Companies with more than 15 employees would allow one week off.

Employers could not discriminate against individuals who seek unpaid leave.

Forty-three-year-old Kenneth Borders of Kansas City received the punishment on Monday. He was also ordered to pay nearly $1.3 million in restitution to 27 victims. Borders and two other men in February were convicted of stealing trucks and trailers in Missouri, Kansas, Florida, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska since 1998.
