Bearcats split with Lindenwood Saturday

Northwest2013riggertThe Northwest Missouri State University baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Lindenwood at Bearcat Field in MIAA play.

The Bearcats lost the first game, 6-2, but rebounded to win the second game, 7-6.

Northwest got a walkoff double in the bottom of the seventh from Paul Johnson to win game two.

The Bearcats are now 18-17 overall and 13-11 in MIAA play. The Lions are 17-18 overall and 9-11 in league action.

In game one, James Holler was 1-for-4 with a homerun. He drove in both Bearcat runs.  Austin Wulff drew three walks and scored the other Bearcat run, while Derek Meyer was 1-for-3 on the day.

Joseph Hietpas threw all 7.0 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. Only three of the runs were earned. He had two strikeouts.

In game two, Johnson went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI. His double was his sixth of the year.

Garrett Fort was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. He also had an outfield assist, throwing out a runner at third to end the sixth inning.

Steven Garber was 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored, while Blake Hardegree hit his first homerun of the season, going 1-for-3 on the day.

Brad Roberts started the game but lasted 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits. He had four strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

Rob Henrichs closed out the fifth and recorded an out in the sixth. He did not allow a run and struck out one.

Carson Smith got the win, pitching the final 1.2 innings. He allowed just one hit and had one strikeout with no walks.

Northwest hits the road for a four-game MIAA series at Emporia State starting on Friday, April 10.
