70-year-old inmate dies behind bars

A man serving a life sentence has died behind bars at Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron.

70-year-old Joe K. Johnson was pronounced dead at the Cameron facility Sunday, Sept. 6 at 9:45 p.m.

Johnson was serving a life sentence for first-degree robbery and armed criminal action from Cole County.

Official said Johnson died of apparent natural causes.

Johnson has been behind bars for 25-years, he was admitted into the Department of Corrections in August of 1990.
