A spree of robberies at Subway restaurants across the Kansas City area came to an end after the suspect made a crucial blunder involving a bag of chips.
KCTV-5 reports a serial robber left behind a very important clue on a bag of Lay’s Oven Baked barbeque chips after a robbery at a Subway on North Oak Trafficway. Police searched surveillance video and found the suspect made a costly mistake. He touched a bag of chips and left behind fingerprints for officers to examine for evidence.
Before that break in the case, a man matching the same description robbed at least nine Subways in Kansas and Missouri. In each robbery, the suspect placed a bag of chips or a cookie on the counter acting as if he wanted to buy it. Instead, he pulled out a gun and plastic bag and demanded cash.
A grand jury has indicted Terrance L. Coleman for robbery and armed criminal action after they watched surveillance video of a robbery February 12th. In the video, they watched the suspect pick up a bag of chips and put it back. He then picked up a second bag of chips and robbed the Subway.
Officers sent the first bag he touched to a crime lab. Investigators say the lab confirmed the fingerprints on the first bag are Coleman’s. According to court documents, after police matched his fingerprints they took his photo in a photo lineup to other locations that were robbed. Several employees picked Coleman out of the lineup as the man who robbed their location as well.
A judge set bail at $500,000. Mr. Coleman is due in court April 28.
