Couple charged with child endangerment after “overlay” death of infant

Preliminary hearings are scheduled later this month for two Maryville residents accused of child endangerment for allegedly contributing to the death of an infant child with whom they shared a bed.

During their first appearances this week, bail was set at $25,000 each for Jeffrey Scott Meyer and Christon Chambers. According to court documents the pair consumed alcohol and then fell asleep in the same bed as the infant and another child on July 5, 2015.

The 7-week-old child was found unresponsive early the next morning and was pronounced dead at Mosaic Life Care. Officials believe one or both of the parents rolled on top of or against the infant while sleeping.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled May 26th for Meyer, while Chambers is scheduled for a hearing May 20. Both were detained in the Buchanan County Jail Thursday morning.

According to online court records, prosecutors in Buchanan County filed probable cause statements in the case last week, but the warrants were not served until earlier this week.
