SOS volunteers are needed by the United Way of Greater St. Joseph.
“United Way SOS is a drive that will be collecting new athletic shoes or socks and we are collecting those to distribute through Community Service’s Soles for Christ program,” said Kylee Strough, United Way President.
She said SOS stands for Socks or Shoes. Strough said while the AFL-CIO’s Soles for Christ program gives school age children in need a new pair of shoes, sometimes those kids only have one pair of socks.
“Through Community Services they’ve had enough shoes for the children but each child only gets one pair of socks and that’s mainly so they have a pair to try on shoes with,” Strough said. “They found out from some families that that’s really all the socks they have at home is just that one pair.”

The SOS drive will be held July 30 and 31 at the East Hills Shopping Center. Strough said volunteers are needed to help collect the donated socks and shoes.
“We are looking for volunteers to work in pairs of two or three at a couple of different entrances and one set of volunteers to work in the center court area collecting items,” she said.

The AFL-CIO Community Services will hold its Soles for Christ distribution Aug. 8 and 9 at its location on 1203 N. 6th St.
