Lenora Canary (Davis) Nienstedt
1931-2017
Lenora Canary (Davis) Nienstedt was born on December 16, 1931 in
Simpson, Louisiana to Albert Davis and Lillie (Boswell) Davis. She went
to our Lord on May 5, 2017 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.
She grew up on a farm with her mother and her grandparents John and
Canary Boswell, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Lenora
was a woman of great faith and conviction. She was an incredibly kind
spirit as well as generous and giving. She was always quick to sacrifice
for her family and friends. Lenora was very outgoing, had a quick wit,
and enjoyed spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and
great grandchildren. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Lenora was working at Ft. Polk, Louisiana when she met Byron Henry
Nienstedt. That relationship would blossom and she married him on
October 4, 1958 at the Eastside Baptist Church in Leesville, Louisiana.
Her husband preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings – Dee Davis, Carl
Davis, Leona Stephens, and her parents.
Lenora is survived by five children – William Nienstedt (Melody),
Lee Ann Trautman (Mark), Lynn Nienstedt-Mason, Martin Nienstedt
(Christie), Carl Nienstedt (Leigh), and 11 grandchildren, as well as 12
great-grandchildren.

Steve J. Vertin
1948-2017
Steve J. Vertin, 69, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017.
He was born March 19, 1948 in Waukegan, Illinois to Louis and Mary (Scott) Vertin.
Steve served as coach and Dean of Students for Bishop LeBlond High School from 1999 – 2015. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish.
He enjoyed coaching, teaching, telling stories, reading the sports page and loved keeping up with his grandchildren. Steve had a strong faith in the Lord.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Cindy Lee.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Cindy (Atchity), sons, J.L Vertin (Amy), Jason Vertin (Betty); grandchildren, Emma, Lexi, Caleb, Max, Reece, Chance, Rowen, Charlie and Mary Vertin; siblings, Gail Bessey, Greg Vertin, Mike Vertin, Dee Lenner, and Toni Walker; numerous nieces and nephews.

Michael Paul Boos
1975-2017
Michael Paul Boos, 41, a Hiawatha native, died May 9, 2017 at his home in Joplin, Mo of complications related to kidney disease.
Michael was born May 19, 1975 in Hiawatha, KS, one of four children born to Stanly and Donna Kiesling Boos. He was a 1994 graduate of Hiawatha High School. Michael went on to receive his associates degree in computer science from Vatterott College in Joplin. He was most recently employed by Leggitt & Platt in IT support. Michael was an avid reader, enjoyed movies and online gaming.
He is preceded in death by his Father, Stan Boos.
Michael is survived by his Mother, Donna Boos of Hiawatha. His brother, Mark Boos (Shirley) of Zenda, KS, two sisters, Julie and Jennifer Boos, both of Nashville, TN, two nieces, Alea and Peyton Boos; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Celebration of Michael’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, May 19, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Father Dan Gardner will officiate.
The family will visit with friends one hour prior to services.

Bill Ray Dunham
1949-2017
Bill R. Dunham 68, of Faucett, MO passed away unexpectedly Monday May 8, 2017 at KU Medical Center. He was born April 10, 1949 in Cameron, Missouri son of the late Maxine & James Dunham. He graduated from Faucett High School, and married Ruthie Knox on September 3, 1971, she survives of the home. He retired from Concorp Fabrication in Kansas City Missouri as a Field Supervisor. He served in the United States Air Force. Bill was a member of the Charity-Zeredetha Lodge #189 A.F. & A.M., the Moila Shrine, and active in many of its organizations, such as the Hot Sand Bugs participating and numerous parades throughout the summer, Bill served as Commander for Moila Legions of Honor, and he also was the photographer for International Legions of Honor, and Imperial for the order. He enjoyed photography, traveling, spending time with his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand, he was also an organ donor and many lives will be affected by his generosity. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Virgil Dunham, and sisters, Helen Conkling, and Dorothy Bailey. He is survived by wife, Ruthie Dunham of the home, sons, Chad (Tammy) Dunham of Faucett, MO, and Dustin (Tricia) Dunham of Weston, MO, grandchildren, Keegan, Karahlynn, and Payton, brothers, Aaron Dunham, Ohio, and Jerry Dunham, St. Joseph, sisters, Mary Lou (Howard) Huber, Highland, KS, and Carol Komer, Agency, MO, mother in law Lila Knox, St. Joseph, sister in laws: Esther (Darrell) Jones, and Linda (Mark) May, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of life will be held at 2:00PM May 20, Saturday at the Moila Shrine Temple. The inurnment will be held at a later date at the Leavenworth National Cemetery with military honors. Ida Mae Hooper
1923-2017
HIAWATHA, KS Ida Mae Hooper, 94, went home to be with her God Monday afternoon, May 8, 2017, at Vintage Park Assisted Living Apartments in Hiawatha.
Ida Mae Ploeger was born March 11, 1923, at Robinson, KS, one of four daughters born to the late William August Christian and Minnie Celesta Ruth Ploeger and had lived all of her life in Northeast Kansas. She grew up near Hiawatha where she attended Central School, Hiawatha Junior High School, later graduated Hiawatha High School with the class of 1941, where she was one of the first active members of National Honor Society. Ida Mae attended and completed a business course with Chillicothe Business College, Chillicothe, Missouri. It was during World War II, she worked at Hanna Rubber Company in Kansas City.
She married Leonard “Keith” Hooper, July 29, 1945 at First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. They farmed and operated a dairy east of Hiawatha all of their married life until Keith’s unexpected death in 1976. Ida Mae not only was a dedicated farm wife, she also worked as a flexible clerk/carrier for seventeen years for the Hiawatha Post Office. She loved to travel especially with family. She traveled the world: to Europe with a friend Esther Knoche, to Turkey and Australia to visit Bob, to Germany to see Casee, Alaska cruise, Panama Canal cruise, and Mediterranean Sea cruise.
Mrs. Hooper was very dedicated to her Church, First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha: a Choir member for 31 years; first grade school Sunday school teacher for 25 years; secretary of the Choir, secretary of Esther Circle; Sunday school class officer; and a Latchkey volunteer. She helped build a Sunday school building in Mexico.
Ida Mae was very active in her community: a member of the ladies auxiliary to VFW Post #5210, Homer White Post #66, American Legion, both of Hiawatha, where served as an officer in both, as well as, president for many years. She was a member of the Sunshine Community Club; Senior Citizens Center; and Brown County Historical Society. She volunteered at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, and elementary school tutor. She also provided transportation for senior citizens to doctor appointments in Topeka/Kansas City, or KCIl Airport.
When her children were small, she helped with Hiawatha Jayhawkers 4H Club where they were members. Through the years with the avenue of flags, she worked with Mt. Zion Rustlers 4-H Club to put out the flags at the cemetery for Memorial Day.
Ida Mae was a true patriot: gave speeches about the flag at the elementary school for many years. She, with the help of members from the Hiawatha VFW, started the “Avenue of Flags” at Mt. Hope Cemetery. A project she continued working on for over 25 years. At the death of a veteran, she would fly flags at the entrance of the cemetery, flags in honor of the veteran that was being buried, a service that continues today with the help of the Hiawatha American Legion.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter Ann Hall, two sisters: Ruth Carr, and Ruby Nolte.
Survivors include her children: Margaret (Larry) Goering of Newton, KS, Lela (Steve) Hewlett of Valparaiso, IN, Thomas (Beth) Hooper of Hiawatha, KS, Robert (Nancy) Hooper of Chicago, IL; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a son-in-law Ben Hall of Augusta; and a sister Margaret Spare of rural Hiawatha.
A Celebration of Ida Mae’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. Reverend Jacob Cloud will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 10 a.m. Friday and where the family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 that evening.

Phyllis Euler
1929-2017
Phyllis Albers Euler, 87, passed away on May 10, 2017.
Phyllis was born August 19, 1929 to Glen and Maude (Swaim) Grimes near Falls City, NE, the younger of two daughters, eventually moving to Doniphan County when she was four years old. She graduated from Highland High School and Highland Community College, and attended St. Benedictine College. For several years, she taught grade school in Doniphan and Brown Counties.
She was married in 1951 to Byron Albers for 23 years, lived in Bendena, KS, and was a devoted mother to her two daughters. They were members of the St. John’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was a soloist for numerous weddings, funerals, and community functions. She was active in the PTA, serving as President for one year, and also enjoyed being a 4-H leader for many years.
After Byron passed away, she married Jack Euler in 1975 and lived in Wathena, KS. They were married for 40 years where they dedicated their lives to family and community activities.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Byron Albers and Jack Euler, parents Glen and Maude (Swaim) Grimes, and sister Glenita Martin.
She is survived by daughters Deborah Albers Holthaus (Len) of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Pamela Albers Betta (Joe) of Somerset, PA; granddaughter Pam Hughes (Mike) of St. Joseph, MO; great granddaughter Amanda Chen (Jason) of St. Joseph, MO; great-great grandchildren Trinaty and Tre Chen; nieces Linda Sue Nasse of Overland Park, KS and Joan Burke (Rick) of Kansas City, MO; step-sons Rick Euler (Lori) and Joel Euler (Lynn) of Wathena, KS; step-grandchildren Jennifer Davis (Jason), Aubrey Griffin (Matt), J.T. Euler (Sarah), Zach Euler (Adrienne), Avery Euler, Linus Euler and Kimberly Euler all of Wathena, KS; and 11 step-great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 15th at the United Methodist Church in Wathena, KS. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service and burial will follow at the Moray Cemetery in Bendena, Ks. Friends may call after 9 A.M. Saturday at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena, Kansas.

Norman was born on July 18, 2016 in St. Joseph, MO the son of Cole and Jackee (Grimm) Klawuhn. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was baptized on August 21, 2016. Norman was the families blessed angel, always happy and smiling, a ray of sunshine on a dark day. Norman thought it was the funniest to chase his dogs in his walker and to always pull off his socks.
Norman is survived by his parents, Cole and Jackee Klawuhn of the home. Paternal grandparents; Jeff and Robyn Klawuhn, Rushville, MO, maternal grandmother; Mary Harold, Union Star, MO, paternal great grandmother, Mary Klawuhn, Rushville, MO, uncles; Dylan Klawuhn, Lucas Harold, aunts, Lexie and Lynde Harold, honorary grandparent, Heidi Busenbarrick.

Mary Elizabeth Park Cotton
1925-2017
Mary E. Park Cotton, 91, of Saint Joseph, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 in Gower, MO. She was born October 13, 1925 in Rushville, MO, daughter of Ethyl and Richard Steele. She graduated from Rushville High School, and retired after many years from the Rushville State Bank. She was a choir leader at the church, and lead the “Mini-Sounds” Childrens Choir. She was a former president of NABW, and enjoyed reading, baking, and spoiling her grandchildren. She was a former member of the Rushville Christian Church, and a current member of the Agency United Methodist Church. Mary was preceded in death by 1st husband, Eugene Park, 2nd husband, Charles G. Cotton, her parents, brothers, Charles M Steele and Norman “Buster” Steele, sisters, Zetta Steele and twin infant sisters. Survivors include, daughter, Jan (David) McClurg, Saint Joseph, step-daughter, Betty Brychta, St. Joseph, MO, granddaughters, Shannon (Brian) Miller and Erin (Logan) Walker, St. Joseph, MO, grandson, Bryce McClurg, great grandchildren: Brady Miller, Riley Miller, Lauren (Cory) Bower, Lexi Walker, Macy McClurg, Reese McClurg, step-granddaughters, Jenny Brychta, Amy (Marty) Ruhnke, and Leah Cotton, step-great grandson Max Ruhnke, and a niece, Shirley (Richard) Sanor of San Jose, CA.

Barbara “Lynn” Rice
1944-2017
Wathena, Kansas – Barbara “Lynn” Rice, of Wathena, Kansas passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at her home.
Lynn was born on December 14, 1944, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to William D. & Gertrude (Hewins) Kiehnhoff.
She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Women’s Council, the Wathena Garden Club, the Red Hatters, and was active in various Bible studies. Lynn worked for the Farmers State Bank, for over twenty years. Lynn was an avid traveler and developed many friendships over the years. She was always excited to watch Dain and Kaelin play sports. Basketball season was a highlight for Lynn; she enjoyed watching and attending, KU games. Lynn was a great giver of her time, she never met a stranger and she leaves behind many special friends.
Lynn married Ronald F. Rice on December 29, 1962 in Wathena, Kansas. He preceded her in death on February 27, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Dennis Gene Teske
1943-2017
SABETHA – Dennis Gene Teske, 74, of Sabetha, died Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Sabetha Community Hospital.
He was born April 29, 1943 in Topeka , the son of Arnold and Lenora Honig Teske. He graduated from Onaga High School in 1961 and from Pittsburg State University in 1965.
Dennis worked for the Van Doren, Hazard and Stallings Architecture Firm and later for the Joe Weekly Architecture Firm, both in Topeka. In 1973 he and Joyce moved to Onaga where they farmed and raised livestock until 2000.
He was a founding member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Onaga, a member of the Farmer’s Coop Association in Manhattan, serving as president and secretary-treasurer from 1987 to 2002, a board member of the Production Credit Association, Pottawtomie County Farm Bureau, serving as president from 1975 to 1981, Rural Fire District No. 3 for seventeen years, Young Farmers at Onaga and the Onaga Jaycees .
Dennis married Joyce Jepson on May 2, 1970 in Topeka. She survives, of the home.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Gene Teske, who died January 16, 2014, and two sisters, Myra Teske and Alice Teske.
Other survivors include a son, Kirk Teske, Sabetha; two daughters, Sherri Magnett (Charles), Omaha, NE and Melody Craig (Daniel), Sabetha; a sister, Jolene Cervantes (Lorenzo), Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren, Jamie Faris (Steve), Searria Leprich, Chase Magnett (Alex), Page Magnett, Nathaniel Teske, Kaine Teske, Kiley Teske, Malorie Lierz and Rebecca Craig, and six great grandchildren, Aryanna and Lucas Petty, Mirabelle and Gwenevyre Faris, and Arya and Josie Leprich.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 17th at the New Hope Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Onaga Cemetery.
