The St. Joseph Mustangs finally lost their first game of the season Thursday, but they did bounce back to split a doubleheader with the Ozark Generals inside Phil Welch Stadium.
St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team dropped the opener 1-0 before taking the nightcap 8-4. The Mustangs are now 8-1 this season and 7-1 in the MINK League.
Game one was a pitchers dual as the two teams combined for just seven hits in the seven inning game. St. Joseph starter Mahlyk Davis allowed one run in the first inning and that was all Ozark would need. Davis gave up one run and four hits in six innings of work. He also struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.
Jackson Wagner had two of the three Mustangs’ hits.
In game two, the Generals scored one run in the top of the first but St. Joe then scored six unanswered runs over the first four innings and they cruised to the 8-4 win.
Ozark committed six errors to help the Mustangs as they scored four unearned runs. Karl Koerper had two hits and an RBI, while Wagner and Terrane Spurlin added one run batter in each.
Colton Kenagy threw a seven inning complete game to get the win on the mound for St. Joseph. He allowed two hits and three earned runs. Kenagy struck out 11 and walked five.
The Mustangs wrap up their three-game series with Ozark Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside Phil Welch Stadium.
