Mustangs rally from eight-run deficit to defeat Nevada

The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a 14-6 deficit Saturday to defeat the Nevada Griffons 20-16 in a four hour game at Phil Welch Stadium.

St. Joe’s collegiate summer baseball team improves to 13-4 this season and they’re 11-3 in the MINK League.

The two teams traded three runs innings in the first two frames as the game was tied at six after two innings. Nevada then scored eight run in the top of the third and it stayed 14-6 until the fourth inning when the Mustangs exploded for 10 runs to take the lead for good. St. Joseph would scored 14 unanswered runs before the Griffons put two on the board in the ninth inning.

Jackson Dierenfeldt had four hits, four runs and two RBI, while Terrance Spurlin added three hits and five runs batted in. Drew Beazly had three hits and Karl Koerper scored five runs for the Mustangs.

Mack Stephenson earned the win in relief as he threw 3.1 scoreless innings. He struck out seven and allowed just two hits.

Colten Kenagy started for St. Joe but he struggled as he allowed six earned runs and eight hits in 2.2 innings.

The Mustangs are on the road Sunday as they travel to Jefferson City for a 7:00 p.m first pitch with the Renegades.
