Missouri fraternity suspended for at least 2 years

delta-upsilonCOLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — The University of Missouri chapter of the Delta Upsilon fraternity will be suspended until at least the fall of 2018 for repeatedly violating fraternity and university policy and state law.

Delta Upsilon International announced the suspension Tuesday, citing incidents at three parties this semester. All operations of the Columbia chapter have stopped indefinitely and members are suspended.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports the suspension is not related to a Sept. 27 incident at Delta Upsilon’s Columbia house when members of the Legion of Black Collegians reported people shouted racist and sexist slurs at them. The fraternity was temporarily suspended after that report.

The international group cited three infractions in late August and early September, and said the Missouri chapter then held two more events that violated its temporary suspension.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Three teenagers are in custody in the armed robbery of the wife of Missouri Gov.-Elect Eric Greitens, who says it’s a good thing police got to them before he did.

Eric and Sheena Greitens spoke at a brief news conference Tuesday. Sheena Greitens was robbed at gunpoint Monday while in her car outside a coffee shop in St. Louis. She was unharmed.

Police say the suspects also stole a car, used it in another attempted robbery and broke into another car.

Police were able to track the cellphone taken in the break-in to the suspects’ vehicle, which crashed during a brief chase. The suspects are ages 14, 15 and 19.

Eric Greitens says he is glad police got to them first, but neither he nor a spokesman would elaborate.

Kansas woman gets 3 years for embezzling $570K from employer

gavelWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A southern Kansas woman who admittedly stole more than $570,000 from her former employer has been ordered to spend three years in prison. A Sedgwick County judge on Monday sentenced 46-year-old Jeannette Block of Wichita. She had pleaded guilty in October to one count of felony theft.

Authorities say Block worked for Pizza Hut of Southeast Kansas Inc. as an accountant and controller for 15 years. Prosecutors say Block’s thefts took place over the last five years of her employment, ending in 2014.

The district attorney’s office says in a statement that Block asked the judge to grant her probation so she could pay back the rest of the money, insisting she already had sold her home and returned $200,000 of the stolen money.

Wichita woman and 3 children found safe after abduction

wichita-policeWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Authorities say the abduction of a Wichita woman and three children after a residential burglary was not a random event.

Wichita police said Tuesday that 36-year-old Melissa Gifford, 2-year-old Grayson Gifford, 8-year-old Madison Ruiz and 8-year-old Aiden Ruiz were found safe at a hotel in Wichita after the reported abduction.

Wichita police say in a news release the suspect and others were located earlier at a hotel, and are being interviewed.

A man told officers responding to a burglary call that several suspects had entered his home. One man had allegedly pointed a handgun at him and tied him up. The suspects allegedly stole electronics and then escorted the women and her three children from the home.

Their disappearance had led law enforcement to issue an Amber Alert overnight.

Program helps Kansas youths who have aged out of foster care

Kansas Department for Children and FamiliesTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Young adults who have aged out of foster care are getting some Christmas cheer through a statewide program.

Department for Children and Families spokeswoman Theresa Freed says about 600 young people are signed up this year for the Hope for the Holidays program. Donors contribute gift cards and personal notes.

The effort started in 2006 when a staff member wanted to help out former foster children. While they didn’t have much, they also didn’t qualify for assistance.

The program has since gone statewide, with 313 youths reached through the campaign last year.

Hope for the Holidays program consultant Deborah O’Neil said last year, organizers received many thank you notes saying that the program’s gift was the only one they got for Christmas.

Officials have not released the medical condition of Horner, a seven-year veteran of the department.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — The FBI has seized computer data that may be connected to a federal investigation into Sioux City’s emitting improperly treated sewage with high levels of harmful bacteria into the Missouri River.

The Sioux City Journal reports that agents served a warrant Thursday at the city-county Information Technology Department.

Tony Morfitt is a spokesman for the U.S. attorney in northern Iowa, and he said Monday he couldn’t comment on what the agents were seeking. Attorney Guy Cook represents the city in the wastewater matter, and he told the Journal the city is cooperating with the U.S. attorney’s office and the FBI.

The wastewater treatment practices have been under state and federal scrutiny since Iowa officials learned last year that two plant supervisors were manipulating chemical levels used to treat sewage.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis-area businessman and three other men will have a detention hearing Tuesday in federal court in St. Louis after being accused of kidnapping and beating a man over three days.

U.S. Attorney Richard Callahan on Friday called it one of the nastiest kidnappings he’d ever seen.

BAM Brands CEO Todd Beckman and three others — Kerry Roades and brothers Blake and Caleb Laubinger — remained in custody Monday after being arrested last Thursday and charged with kidnapping.

Court records say the man was held Nov. 21 to 23 and released after his parents paid about $27,000 in ransom money.

Beckman’s lawyer told The Associated Press that his client will plead not guilty.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Blake Laubinger’s lawyer also said his client will plead not guilty, while Caleb Laubinger’s lawyer did not respond to a message.

An attorney for Roades did not immediately return a call from the AP.

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man is jailed on $500,000 cash bond after being accused of telling co-workers he was affiliated with the Islamic State group and could have their auto-detailing job site blown up by making a phone call.

St. Louis County prosecutors charged 26-year-old Mustafa Barimac on Sunday with making a terrorist threat, a felony punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Police in suburban St. Louis’ Creve Coeur say Barimac made the threat Nov. 25 to fellow employees of Teph Seal, showing them a tattoo he claimed was related to IS.

A police investigator wrote in a probable-cause statement accompanying the criminal complaint that Barimac admitted making the threat.

Police say a search of the business uncovered no explosives.

Online court records don’t show whether Barimac has an attorney.

USGS: 3.9 magnitude earthquake hits northern Oklahoma

USGS logoPAWNEE, Okla. (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a 3.9 magnitude earthquake has struck northern Oklahoma. There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage.

The earthquake was originally reported as a 4.2-magnitude earthquake, but was later downgraded to a 3.9 magnitude. The temblor happened at 9:22 p.m. The quake’s epicenter was about eight miles east of Pawnee, 26 miles east, northeast of Stillwater and 75 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.

The quake was as far north as the southern Kansas border and as far south as Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma’s earthquakes have been linked to oil and gas production, and state regulators have shut down or imposed new restrictions on underground wells that are used for wastewater disposal.
