St. Louis police shoot, injure armed suspect

St Louis Police patchST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says officers shot a man who pointed a gun at them during a pursuit.

The chief told reporters at a news conference Tuesday night that the incident began with officers pursuing a car stolen in a carjacking and then used in two armed robberies.

Dotson says the officers were attempting to pull the car over when someone inside fired shots at them.

The chase continued until the car pulled into a dead-end apartment complex.

Dotson says four or five suspects bailed out. As they fled, one person pointed a gun at officers, who fired at him. Dotson says the suspect was shot in the lower extremities and taken to a hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.

Police are searching for the other suspects. No officers were injured.

Former Monsanto exec to get $22.5M as whistleblower

Monsanto
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A former Monsanto executive who tipped off regulators about the agribusiness giant’s accounting practices involving rebates for its Roundup weed-killer will get nearly $22.5 million as a whistleblower.

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced Tuesday the payout comes out of the $80 million penalty the St. Louis-based company agreed to pay under a February settlement with the agency.

That agreement resolved allegations that Monsanto Co. misstated its earnings by improperly disclosing the costs of a rebate program for Roundup. That had the effect of distorting Monsanto’s earnings reports for 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The whistleblower’s name wasn’t released. That person’s attorney only identified his client as a former Monsanto financial executive.

Tuesday’s award is the second-biggest the SEC has given a whistleblower since a $30 million payout in 2014.

Judge tosses Kansas jail inmate’s religious-rights lawsuit

gavel imageTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A federal judge in Kansas has thrown out a Muslim inmate’s lawsuit that accused a county jail of violating the convicted killer’s religious rights.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports U.S. Magistrate Judge David J. Waxse in Topeka dismissed Eddie Gordon Sr.’s 2014 lawsuit against the Shawnee County Jail and its administrators.

Acting as his own attorney, Gordon alleged he wasn’t fed for 28 hours during the season of Ramadan, when Muslims for 30 days fast from dawn until after sunset. He also said jail officials served him cold, unbearable meals so close to his prayer time that he couldn’t eat them before fasting.

Waxse dismissed the lawsuit after Gordon failed to show in a timely manner how the alleged conduct harmed him physically or intentionally interfered with his religion.

NEW YORK (AP) — Chipotle’s latest burrito giveaway is for children.

The company is offering free kid’s meals on Sundays during the month of September, another attempt to lure back customers spooked by a series of food scares. An E. coli outbreak last year sent Chipotle sales plunging.

In June, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. launched a three-month loyalty program that lets customers earn free meals based on the number of visits they make each month. On Monday, it announced that high school and college students could get a free soda or iced tea if they buy a meal and show ID. The chain has already given away millions of free burritos this year.

The Chipotle kid’s meals include burritos, tacos, quesadillas and salads.

Pipeline company seeks restraining order against protesters

Dakota Access routeDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The company building an oil pipeline across Iowa is asking a federal judge to issue a restraining order against two protest groups and their leaders. Dakota Access filed the action in Des Moines on Monday against Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, Bold Iowa and their directors including former state lawmaker Ed Fallon, who leads Bold Iowa.

The groups are planning acts of civil disobedience along the pipeline route to protest its construction.

The company seeks a court order keeping protesters at least 25 feet away from construction easements which it says will “permit the meaningful opportunity to exercise protected First Amendment speech while ensuring the safety of all involved.”

Dakota Access says protesters have burned its equipment causing $3 million in property damage and delaying construction in two counties.

Transgender inmate latest to push for hormone treatment

Bible-GavelST. LOUIS (AP) — A transgender inmate is suing the Missouri prison system for refusing to provide hormone therapy as she transitions to a woman, adding her voice to those of prisoners in other states who argue that denying such treatment amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.

The suit was filed on behalf of Jessica Hicklin, 37, serving life in prison without parole for first-degree murder.

The lawsuit also names Corizon Health, the health care provider for the Missouri Department of Corrections. A message seeking comment from the corrections department was not returned. A Corizon spokeswoman declined to comment, citing pending litigation.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates there are 3,200 transgender inmates in U.S. prisons and jails.
