ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis man is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of his son.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 22-year-old Deveontay Bell also was charged Sunday with felony child abuse resulting in death. He is jailed on $500,000 cash-only bond.

Police were called to Bell’s home Friday. The infant was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say an autopsy revealed liver laceration and tears to other organs. The medical examiner ruled the injuries were consistent with being struck in the abdomen.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a report that one or more male inmates sexually assaulted two women at the downtown Kansas City correctional center.

Jackson County said in a news release Sunday night that Regional Correction Center staff were notified Friday about the allegations and contacted law enforcement to request an investigation.

No staff members have been accused of engaging in sexual contact with any inmates. But through an internal review, one staff member has been suspended without pay for potentially violating department policies and procedures.

Jackson County says it’s cooperating with the investigation and directed questions to police. Police didn’t immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press early Monday seeking comment.

Former U.S. Attorney Todd Graves has been hired to investigate the attacks.

The small Baptist-affiliated university offered scholarships to all seven of the Iowa children soon after they were born on Nov. 19, 1997. Bobbi McCaughey had taken a fertility drug. They are the world’s first surviving septuplets. The family also has a 20-year-old daughter.

Two of the septuplets, Alexis and Kenneth, are staying close to home and attending Des Moines Area Community College. And Brandon joined the military.

All seven graduated in May from Carlisle High School.

SALINA, Kan. (AP) — A central Kansas family is using bake sales and raffles to increase the reward for information leading to their mother’s killers.

The Salina Journal reports Lori Heimer’s body was found June 25 in her home southeast of Assaria, where she operated a dog-breeding business. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation soon released descriptions of two men in connection with the case and the pickup trucks they were driving, but they haven’t been found.

Joni Alexander, one of Heimer’s four daughters, says KBI agents told her it was essential to raise awareness of her mom’s slaying.

A reward fund contains more than $50,000, and Alexander says the fundraisers help the family stay engaged in the search for anyone responsible for Heimer’s death. They have also received pledges of more than $7,000 on the Web site www.gofundme.com

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Officials with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City are starting a long process that could lead to expanding the museum.

The Kansas City Star reports the building is cramped, particularly in office and storage space. It exhibits only about 6 percent of its 39,000 arts pieces, which is normal for museums that often rotate their works from storage.

But director of administration Mark Zimmerman says the museum has offices in galleries that should be devoted to art.

Museum officials plan to work with members, donors, neighbors and the public to explain the institution’s needs and expansion options.

A 1999 strategic plan led to more space for special exhibits, collections and other programs but offices for the museum’s nearly 300 employees and non-art storage are still lacking.

Kansas City police shoot suspect, shots then fired at police

KCPD patchKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City police shot an armed man early Sunday and then scrambled to cover after someone in the crowd fired shots toward them.

Spokeswoman Sgt. Kari Thompson says officers were investigating a large crowd that had gathered in southeast Kansas City when they confronted and shot a person with a weapon.

Thompson says as police administered first aid to that man, a second person approached officers in an aggressive manner and refused to move, prompting officers to use a stun gun on that person.

Someone in the crowd fired several shots toward the officers, who moved the injured man and themselves to safety. After the scene was secure the man who was shot was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

No one else was injured. Further details weren’t released.

CARROLLTON, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating after a Carrollton police officer shot an armed man.

The shooting happened Saturday night as two officers were issuing a citation about a dog running loose.

The patrol says the man, 69-year-old David Blair, was unhappy about the citation and was carrying a handgun. Investigators say Blair was shot when he refused the officers’ orders to drop the gun.

Blair is hospitalized in critical condition in Columbia.

The patrol says the officer who shot Blair is a three-year veteran of the department. He and the other officer are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
