VAN NUYS, Calif. (AP) — About 180,000 pacifiers have been recalled due to a choking hazard.

The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission says the recall involves Munchkin-brand Latch lightweight pacifiers and clips, which are sold as a set. The commission says the clip cover can detach from the clip itself, creating a choking hazard.

Commission spokeswoman Patty Davis says Munchkin is conducting a voluntary recall in cooperation with the government.

There have been 10 reports of the clip cover coming off in the U.S. and Canada, but no injuries have been reported.

The sets were sold between March 2014 and March of this year at retailers nationwide, including Babies ‘R’ Us, Target, Wal-Mart and Amazon.

NAACP questions accuracy of Missouri racial profiling data

NAACPJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — St. Louis NAACP officials are questioning the accuracy of Missouri data on racial disparity in police stops.

St. Louis chapter president Adolphus Pruitt said during a Monday legislative hearing that biased policing could be underreported.

Missouri requires officers to record information such as the race of drivers after vehicle stops. Analysts then review data for racial disparity trends in policing.

Pruitt pointed to 2012 reports from one St. Louis County officer. He says the officer’s activity log for one day notes arrests not included in data submitted to the state. He says that could mean annual reports don’t show an accurate picture of police bias.

Pruitt says reporting laws need to be tightened.

The state attorney general’s office must submit the analysis of 2015 data no later than June 1.

Questions linger at prison where riot happened last year

Tecumseh State Correctional Institution

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Operations are improving at the prison in southeast Nebraska where two inmates were killed in a riot last year, but a number of concerns remain.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports repairs to the prison building from the May 10 riot aren’t complete.

The facility remains short on staff, which makes it hard to provide adequate programs for inmates. Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes says the prison is nearly back to the way it was operating before the riot, and he complemented the hard work staff has done.

Omaha Sen. Bob Krist says he’s still not clear exactly what is being done to change the culture of the prison and resolve longstanding issues. Also, the number of inmate-on-staff assaults in recent months is troubling.

The jackpot is the sixth-largest in Powerball jackpot history.

Luis Sandoval sold the winning ticket. He tells NJ.com that when his co-workers told him the news he was “blown away.”

Missouri State SealJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Proponents of initiatives aimed at sales taxes, cigarette taxes and medical marijuana submitted petitions Sunday in hopes of getting their proposals on Missouri’s November ballot.

The secretary of state’s office has until Aug. 9 to certify whether the initiatives got enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot.

Union fees, abortion changes pending as Missouri session winds down

Missouri capitol
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Measures on union fees and changes to abortion policy are pending in the final week of Missouri’s 2016 legislative session. Lawmakers face a May 13 deadline to pass legislation.

Proposals on the table include a bill to limit lobbyist gifts to lawmakers, which currently are unlimited.

A number of abortion measures are advancing, including a ban on the donation of fetal tissue from abortions. Another would require both parents to be notified if a minor seeks an abortion.

A bill to require public employees in unions to annually reauthorize automatic payments for dues and fees, vetoed by Gov. Jay Nixon, awaits a final vote to override in the Senate.

Other measures lawmakers still have time to pass include proposals to allow full-time employees on college campuses to carry concealed firearms.

Twisters reported in Kansas, Nebraska; more severe weather possible Monday

wpid-nwslogo.gif
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Forecasters say severe storms are likely Monday in parts of the Southern and Great Plains states, with tornadoes and very large hail a possibility in some areas.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, says the greatest risk for bad weather is in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. But forecasters say the storms could stretch into parts of Missouri and western Illinois, where isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

In all, about 41 million people from Houston to Des Moines, Iowa, are at risk for some type of stormy weather Monday.

Mother’s Day twisters in Nebraska and Kansas did not prompt any immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The National Weather Service says severe storms spawned at least two tornadoes in western Kansas. Meteorologist Ray Burgert says a tornado touched down in Trego County just after 6 p.m. Sunday and another touched down in northern Ellis county around 7:20 p.m.

Burgert says the weather service didn’t receive any immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The National Weather Service says it received reports of tornadoes in central Nebraska amid severe storms but no word of damage or injuries.

Meteorologist Jeremy Martin says it is likely that two separate tornadoes touched down in Red Willow County near the town of Indianola. He says another tornado was reported in open country in Frontier County. Martin says the weather service didn’t receive any reports of damage from local authorities.

More storms are possible Monday afternoon and evening.
