Missouri lawmakers question money for refugee resettlement

Missouri CapitolJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri lawmakers are seeking information on how $4.3 million in federal funding will be used to help refugees resettle in the state.

A Republican-led budget committee on Monday reviewed how the federal money is used for housing, medical care and cash assistance.

State lawmakers have little control over federal dollars, but the state budgets $200,000 to help elderly refugees.

Lawmakers, mostly Republicans, have criticized Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon’s refusal to try to block Syrian refugees from settling in Missouri following deadly attacks in Paris.

Some questioned whether enough money is spent on security.

Some House Democrats earlier Monday proposed spending roughly $6.5 million for the State Highway Patrol to adopt additional safeguards. About $1.5 million would be used to verify refugee screenings conducted by the federal government.

Huge child-porn hoard lands Kansas man in prison

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says in October 2012 an investigator with the Ford County Sheriff’s Office found a computer sharing pornography on a file sharing network.

When investigators searched McGary’s home, they found a laptop containing about 16,000 images of child pornography.

Advocates push for changes to Kansas Open Records Act

kansas state sealLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Public records advocates are pushing for state legislators to bring the Kansas Open Records Act regarding disclosure of police records more in line with open record laws in other states. Changes in the law are supported by Harold and Alberta Leach, the Kansas Press Association, the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Kansas Sunshine Coalition for Open Government.

The Leaches feel authorities were secretive about the investigation of their teenage son’s 1988 disappearance. Randy Leach went missing from a graduation party along with the family’s car. Authorities refuse to release the investigative records to the Leaches.

State Rep. John Rubin said he will hold hearings, possibly in January or February, to receive input from the public, prosecutors and law enforcement with the hope of drafting a bill to correct some problems with the law.

New data shows syphilis, HIV cases grow locally

health doctor insuranceWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — New data reports growing numbers in sexually transmitted diseases in Kansas.

State data shows that syphilis rates have more than doubled statewide over the past four years.

The Wichita Eagle reports that 145 syphilis cases were reported in Kansas in 2014, compared to 58 cases that were reported in 2011.

In Kansas, men were three times more likely to have syphilis than women. The disease was most common among 20- to 29-year-olds. African-Americans were more likely to have syphilis than other groups.

Not-yet-finalized Sedgwick County data shows that local HIV cases are also growing. The number of cases is on track to surpass the county’s previous record-high.

Trudy Busch Valentine and Andy Busch say they have seen housing plat maps already drafted for the animal park.

The animal park is owned by six Busch siblings, and earlier this month, four of the siblings sued to force the sale of most of the farm to the St. Louis Zoo for $30 million.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Billy Busch denied Saturday any interest in selling part of the animal park and promised a detailed business plan soon. Billy Busch and Adolphus Busch have asked their siblings to sell the 198 acres of land to Billy Busch for $24 million.

He says he wants to build a small brewery onsite and move his Kräftig beer business to the property.

A 70-year-old woman whose car was swept away in Fort Worth on Friday remained missing Sunday. Authorities say they are planning to send in divers to search for her.

The National Weather Service had flood watches in effect for much of North Texas until 6 p.m., but the areas of most concern sit near the Trinity and Brazos rivers.

Utilities in Oklahoma say ice storms there helped cut power to more than 78,000 as of Sunday morning.
