SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — State wildlife officials say a black bear in Christian County was euthanized this week because someone in the area was feeding it, causing the animal to no longer avoid humans.

The Missouri Department of Conservation says the 250-pound bear couldn’t be relocated to a more remote location, because once a bear associates people with food, it will continue to seek residences or neighborhoods in search of food.

Regional wildlife supervisor Tim Russell says the bear had been seen many times snooping around a home. Russell says if someone had accidentally startled the animal, it could have taken a swipe at that person.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that wildlife employees euthanized the bear Monday after it was caught on a homeowner’s property.

Missouri woman dead after being trapped in submerged vehicle

police lights featureMULBERRY, Kan. (AP) — A Missouri woman is dead after her vehicle slid sideways into a Kansas lake and became submerged, trapping her inside.

The Crawford County, Kansas, Sheriff’s Office says 52-year-old Venice Ann Little of Mindenmines, Missouri, was found dead inside the cab of her submerged GMC Sonoma pickup truck on Tuesday. The Joplin Globe reports an initial investigation determined Little drove too close to a bank near the lake in Mulberry City Park and her vehicle lost traction in the wet grass and mud.

Two other occupants, 47-year-old Sherri West of LaCygne, Kansas, and 33-year-old Mandi Umphenour of Mulberry, Kansas, were able to escape the sinking vehicle. They were unable to get Little out.

An autopsy will be performed to determine her cause of death, which appears to be drowning.

Missouri Senate report: Intern claims sexual harassment

Missouri Senate chamberJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri Senate report is detailing an intern’s claims that Democratic state Sen. Paul LeVota of Independence sexually harassed her.

The report released Wednesday includes findings from an internal Senate investigation that came after two University of Central Missouri students left early from an internship for LeVota during the legislative session that ended in May.

It says the intern claimed “unwelcome messages and explicit requests for sexual activity.”

LeVota denied that he engaged in any sexual harassment and said he would comment further later.

A person familiar with the investigation had told The Associated Press that the investigation focused on an intern’s sexual harassment complaint against LeVota. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

Man pleads guilty to flying in pot to Kansas

marijuana arrestWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Colorado man has pleaded guilty to a charge stemming from flying a plane containing more than 200 pounds of marijuana into a southeast Kansas airport.

The federal prosecutor’s office in Wichita said Wednesday that 59-year-old Kenneth E. Weaver, of Denver, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

In his plea, prosecutors say Weaver admitted his small plane contained about 207 pounds of medical grade marijuana when he flew it into the Iola airport on July 11, 2014.

Federal authorities say Weaver had to forfeit his plane and about $460,000 in cash.

He’s expected to be sentenced to a year in prison when he’s sentenced Oct. 5.

Campaign asked utility for debt donation during rate hike process

sam-brownbackTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Gov. Sam Brownback’s campaign recently approached a Westar Energy official for a campaign debt donation while the utility is in the process of seeking a rate increase.

A campaign official contacted Mark Schreiber, Westar’s government affairs vice president, more than a week ago looking for help retiring the governor’s campaign debt.

The contact with Schreiber takes place when Westar is requesting a $152 million rate increase from the Kansas Corporation Commission.

Brownback spokeswoman Eileen Hawley says Brownback’s office doesn’t influence the KCC’s operations or decision-making.

Westar spokeswoman Gina Penzig acknowledges the request to Schreiber and says it was referred to Westar Employees’ Political Action Committee, which hasn’t made a decision on it yet.

Study groups says single new terminal would be cheaper than renovating existing terminals at KCI

KCIKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A study group says a single new terminal at Kansas City International Airport would be cheaper to build than a major renovation of the existing terminals.

The recommendation is a reversal of earlier expectations. The city’s Aviation Department has recommended discarding the horseshoe terminal concept in favor of a new, single terminal.

Steve Sisneros, director of airport affairs for Southwest, says a renovation project would cost more than $1 billion while a new terminal would cost significantly less than that. He declined to provide more specific numbers.

Tuesday’s special business session was convened to bring council members up to date on the status of the airport talks. Kansas City residents will have a vote on the financing for any major airport improvements.

Missouri and Kansas officials investigate if abortion facilities are selling tissue from aborted fetuses

Planned Parenthood logo(AP) UNDATED — Officials in Missouri and Kansas are investigating abortion facilities to see if they are selling tissue and organs from aborted fetuses.

Attorney General Chris Koster will investigate Missouri’s only abortion center after the release of an undercover video that sparked an outcry, mainly from Republicans.

The video depicts Planned Parenthood’s national medical director discussing the disposition of parts from aborted fetuses. The Democrat on Tuesday announced the investigation, which follows national outcry mainly from Republicans.

Missouri’s Republican-led Senate will conduct an investigation into the facility as well. Republican Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey on Tuesday announced he formed a committee to investigate.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback wants the state to determine if Kansas abortion facilities take part in a fetal tissue program. Brownback’s office said Tuesday he wants the Kansas Board of Healing Arts and the state Department of Health and Environment to investigate whether any Kansas facility sells tissue and organs from aborted fetuses.

At issue is an undercover video released by anti-abortion activists showing Planned Parenthood’s senior director of medical services discussing procedures for providing fetal body parts to researchers.

Planned Parenthood says it legally helps women who want to make not-for-profit donations of their fetus’ organs for scientific research.

Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri says the center doesn’t participate in the fetal program. It says calls for an investigation are about “political grandstanding.” Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Court: judge exceeded authority when he ordered defendant to use contraception

USDOJ colorKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A federal appeals panel says a judge in Kansas City exceeded his authority when he ordered a defendant to use contraception during his supervised release.

Christopher J. Harris was sentenced to 15 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm after his arrest in 2013.

U.S. District Judge Howard Sachs noted at sentencing that Harris had 10 children by seven women.

The judge said Harris’es conduct was creating a “very serious social problem.” Sachs ordered Harris to refrain from “any unprotected sex activities” without the approval of his probation officer.

Lower Platte River Basin shows water surplus; agencies work to store it for drought years

Nebraska Department of Natural ResourcesLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Seven of Nebraska’s natural resources districts are developing a plan to protect the water supply in the Lower Platte River Basin.  The districts are working with the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources to meet the region’s domestic, industrial and agricultural water needs.

The Lower Platte River Basin includes more than 25,000 square miles in eastern and central Nebraska, encompassing nearly one-third of the state from the Sandhills to the Missouri River.  The basin provides irrigation, industrial and drinking water to more than half of the state’s residents.

The coalition says a current inventory of the basin shows a significant surplus of water. Water managers say they’re working to store some of the supply for drought years.
